Weekly Photo Challenge: Lots of Lines…

20/04/2011

“As full lines of battle could not be handled through the thick wood, I ordered the advance of the six brigades by heavy skirmish lines, to be followed by stronger supporting lines.” James Longstreet

Every where we look, there are lines; seemingly endless lines that dominate our space and keep our eyes shifting, darting back and forth, digesting, distinguishing the what and why of it all. When the new word for the photo challenge, LINES, arrived in my mailbox, I was convinced that while lines are everywhere, finding interesting examples to photograph might be a challenge. Sure, one of the fertility dolls in my contribution to last week’s challenge had lines but I needed to find some new lines. Sifting through piles of photos, I found a lot of lines jumping at me, but knowing that only a few would be needed, I passed on many and selected nine. I hope you like them.

“A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.” William Strunk, Jr.

When I saw the quote by William Strunk of Strunk & White fame, I was delighted to include it. Why? Because even in our every day speech, we have lines; time lines, story lines, lifelines, flatlines, punchlines, heart lines, telephone lines, imaginary lines, symmetry lines, parallel lines and on and on. Taking a line out of Strunk’s precise advice on the use of language reminded me that I needed to be as thorough in my selection… Phooey! you might say, but I do take these photo challenges seriously. I enjoy the process, and I learn as much from the selection as I do from the contributions and observations of other blog friends.

“Beauty comes from a life well lived. If you’ve lived well, your smile lines are in the right places, and your frown lines aren’t too bad, what more do you need?” Jennifer Garner

I love the quote above because it is another reminder of how everything around us includes lines in some form or fashion, and how close we are to lines… Beginning with the lines on our palms, our faces and on… This time around, I chose to add the important notes on each picture. The rest is obvious. As you can see, there are lines everywhere and on almost everything. Whether we like it or not, sooner or later, we get in line for life, love and more…

What are your lines like? Did you have an easy or hard time with your photos? What are your thoughts? Do share? 🙂
Positive Motivation Tip: Life is full of lines. Choose the ones you enjoy and follow them.

    I like Frank Geary’s photo.
Sometimes I have copied what he made, when I was student.
    However, I couldn’t earn a good mark.
    Individual characters was important. 🙂

The birds, bridges and benches – my favorites! You do have an artist’s eye with your photos. I am continuously placed in awe of your talent whenever I have the delight of seeing one of your weekly photo challenges! So many kinds of lines that we never focus upon but see every day.

Also, makes me think, in a different way, about my son’s ability to process everything he sees. Does he see so much detail (as in the lines) that the detail may drive him into sensory overload? (Sigh) Someday, I may be able to ask him – when he is older- and get a real answer…

Thanks , as usual, Elizabeth for making me more cognizant of my world! 🙂

Here is another that loved the photos. Lines are very much a part of our lives.

As for my personal lines, I don’t have too many frown lines and my smile lines are in the right places. With more smile lines to come! 🙂

I too like the IAC HQ – it is nice to see a building that isn’t just a tall four-sided block.
