Recently, my sister sent me the picture above. It’s of a delivery bike; one of several used to deliver takeout food from a Chinese restaurant in Lagos, Nigeria. What I loved about the picture, aside from the cheerful, upbeat yellow color, is the memories it brought back of childhood days chasing after a yellow ice cream truck or even a delivery bike that we associated with good news; harbingers of gifts, sweets, and all manner of delectable foods. Even today, kids are drawn to yellow food trucks and if they happen to live in countries where the delivery bikers or trucks carry food items for sale on the street, there is usually a chance that a bit of happiness will be shared in the form of sweets or food treats.
As we chatted about the cute delivery bike, and the delicious hot food it carried and delivered to neighborhood customers in the food container attached, I imagined kids on the street, running along behind the biker singing a song, asking questions, and expecting a sweet or treat. We did it as kids and we were never disappointed. Even though I know the climate might no longer be conducive to such open and playful trust of strangers delivering bits of happiness, I believe there are pockets of generosity in humanity; people who spread happiness. Plus, we don’t forget our memories of happy times, or do we? What are your memories?
The happy memory of a yellow vehicle can also be associated to the playful Yellow Submarine song by The Beatles and other similar associations we have… of moving objects that bring tidings of goodwill and joy. By the way, the yellow submarine above is at Liverpool Airport in honor of The Beatles who started their musical careers there… and while on the subject of delivering happiness/joy, here is another one that shares the rewards of delivering excellent customer service… I recently read the book by Zappos CEO, Tony Hsieh: Delivering Happiness and it is worth a read. 🙂 Have you read it? When I saw the Daily Post prompt for today, on what vehicle we would imagine driving, I immediately thought of the yellow delivery bike because, if we can’t deliver even a sliver of joy, of happiness to each other, what is the point? I love flying but for now, I’ll gladly skip the F-35s & MIGs and drive one of these… Of course, I was delighted when it was confirmed that the habit of chasing colorful food trucks continues in Lagos and that some of the delivery bikers make sure to carry little treats in their pockets for the kids. I found this picture on Wikipedia and I do hope that Yellow Kid is cheerfully imbibing apple juice… Yeah , the happy yellow kid has me a tad giggly from laughter… Hopefully his good cheer glass is filled with sweet juice. Oy vey! What were you allowed to drink during special occasions as a child. Do you have any happy memories of treats that came from street vendors? Any vendors? Do share! 🙂

great answer, it would be kind of fun to drive an ice cream truck or something, and have everyone so excited to see you. especially if you could give the treats away for your special day in the driver’s seat.

Oh Eliz…so many memories.
Before I share my favorite one, let me tell you how uplifting your photos are today (well, they always are). Yellow was always my favorite color…my older sister got married the year before I did…the day after she moved out of our room, I painted the walls YELLOW.
My favorite memory of street vendors…Sunday mornings I would walk to the local mom & pop store (forerunner of 7-11’s) to buy the Sunday paper and a package of Thomas’ English Muffins. On the way home we would pass the street vendor who sold Charlotte Russe…those little sponge cakes in cylindrical cardboard holders, topped with real whipped cream (pre-cool whip days) and a cherry. I think it cost 15 cents…that was a lot of money for my dad to spend, but he always bought one for me and one to take home for my sister.
We loved hearing the approach of the ice cream truck in our neighborhood, but Good Humor trucks were white, not yellow. 🙂

The color yellow reminds me of all that is fun, playful and the excitement of summer. My happy delivery memories comes in a lil’ different form. As a kid, I can remember chasing after city buses to ride on its bumper in anticipation for cooling down during hot summer months. Some neighborhoods had more fire hydrants open (back then fire departments would open fire hydrants during the summer for the neighborhood kids). So naturally, rather than fight with dozens of other kids on the block, some of us kids would jump on the back of a moving bus to get to get to the nearest neighborhoods with the least amount of kids in the hopes of being the first in line to claim it for the day. Bright yellows lines prevented anyone from parking in front of a fire hydrant it was the perfect spot! Nothing could get in the way of our fun! Unless of course an ambulance or a fire truck needed the spot, no worries we kids were happy to oblige then, we waited anxiously but patiently for the emergency to wrap up to resume our fun, after all it was the least we could do, we thought. Ah! Those were the good old days! Yes, I was a lil’ tomboy in those days. I still am, just in heels. Tee…hee.. That’s what the color yellow reminds me of. Happy trails! That yellow bike is adorable! I never had an ice cream truck in my neighborhood growing up. But have often had one as an adult- and it always made me giddy like a child to hear the ice cream truck coming!!

I agree with several other commenters – I grew up with ice cream trucks in my neighborhood, and just hearing their little tinkly melody playing over their loudspeaker would send me into a frenzy of finding some change and running to make a purchase!
This is a lovely post. So true, if we can’t deliver even a sliver of joy, of happiness to each other..what is the point? That is why I enjoy mixing a little humor in my blogs regarding the realities of life. The more laughter we have and share, makes this aging process a little less painful ! 🙂
