DreamScapes: Eyes Wide Open or Not…

04/04/2011

“We are asleep. Our life is a dream. But we wake up, sometimes, just enough to know that we are dreaming.” Ludwig Wittgenstein

DreamScapes: Eyes Wide Open or Not... a lighthouse beckoning

Do you have recurring dreams? What are they about? The world of dreams can be a fascinating place to visit and linger; especially if what you meet there fulfills all the desires you have in your awake state… Of course, if, like Ludwig, you believe the material world is a dream, then the dream world is real and there are no confusions of location and outcomes. But for the rest of us, dreaming is a state that occurs when we close our eyes and drift off. In that state, a lot happens including; dream lucidity, nightmares, astral visits, prophesy, problem solving, and more. I have had my share of these types of dreams but the question above is about recurring dreams.

For years, I had two recurring dreams; one was about being on a boat headed to a lighthouse with flashing lights. It sent such strong signals that I could feel the warmth radiating from the light and, as I drew nearer, the light would get stronger and then my eyes would pop open. The other dream was of me watching myself drive down a familiar road that was hilly.  As I drove down, I would see the light turn green and then quickly turn red as I reached the bottom of the hill. These dreams baffled me for years and after considering many interpretations, I agreed that a lucid dream resolution, being aware of a dream while you’re in it and following through on a plan, would help. Do you recall resolving a recurring dream? Do share.

“I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.” Calvin & Hobbes

DreamScapes: Eyes Wide Open or Not... lucid or not

Have you ever had a lucid dream? Would you want one? Yes, I did try lucid dreaming to resolve the doggedness of those two recurring dreams. I don’t recall if an expert or a book I read suggested I try it, but I remember going to sleep on separate nights intent on solving them. I wrote the dreams in a bedside journal and mentally presented my plan before falling asleep. With the lighthouse, I found myself arriving there and gingerly climbing off the boat, I followed a long flight of stairs to the top of the lighthouse.  Once up there, I met a stranger and we chatted for a while about all sorts of things. At the end, we embraced and feeling fulfilled, I woke up.

The hilly drive was a bit different because I remember the emotions tied to it were anxious ones. As I lucidly drove down that hill, the light changed and I stopped and waited as another driver pulled out from an intersecting street and headed off. I took a deep breath and released the event into the universe. Interestingly enough, years later when I moved to the USA, got married and moved to the suburbs, I found that hilly road… Yep, now that was interesting. Have you had that happen in your dreams?

DreamScapes: Eyes Wide Open or Not... nightmares do vanish

What do you see when you close your eyes and go to sleep? This is a great question because I don’t dream every night. Do you? And sometimes, I don’t even remember certain dreams. I would probably answer this one by saying that depending on the events of my day and my emotional state before I fall asleep, my dreams vary. If I have had a demanding day, I might have a challenging dream or even a nightmare. If I have had a pleasant upbeat day, then I might have a dream filled with colors, music and happy people; but this is not set in stone. Sometimes, I dream of celebrities and actual events; before or after they happen but these are not every day dreaming events. Many a time, I find solutions to issues in my dreams. Do you?

“Dreams are like stars…you may never touch them, but if you follow them they will lead you to your destiny.” Anon

The other point I was going to raise is about that moment between sleep and dreamland, when we are neither asleep nor awake, sometimes our eyes are even open; wide or slightly. I find that lucid dreaming can/does occur in that space. Have you experienced it? What I do remember is that I have had many dreams in black and white and sepia… and that I always remember dreams in color; especially vivid dreams with unusual colors. I remember foods and music. Sometimes smells but rarely. Tip: Keep a notebook bedside and record your dreams when you awake. Do it immediately or it might drift away. 🙂  What about you? Do you remember what you see and are they in color or black and white?

This post was inspired by a prompt on Dreams via the Daily Post Challenge and via Mamakat’s Writers Workshop.

Again, What are your thoughts? Do share? If you could rewrite a dream, how would you end it? What types of dreams do you have frequently? Do share. Thank You! 🙂

Great post Elizabeth! I have a friend who dreams in color and can remember every teensy tiny detail. I have only had that happen once or twice. I have recurring dreams, or at least used to. Haven’t had one for a long time.
I find that when I first open my eyes I can remember the dream but once I start moving it is gone,

Wonderful post. I’ve had a recurring dream that’s been on my mind. In fact, I just posted it earlier today. In my case, someone told me my recurring dream means that I’m carrying great guilt which is why I keep dreaming this particular dream. Dreams are fascinating and reveal so much about us. Anyway, thank you for your post (love the pictures, too!).

    I often dream,
that I am a guitar street musician, blind.
But I can see my parents walking by.
    They don’t recognize me.
    I am happy about that.

What a wonderful post about dreams…and I absolutely LOVE the pictures. 🙂
And, I’ll add an “amen” to the above comments!
I agree that we should all keep a notebook and pencil near the bedside…not only for recording dreams. I’ve discovered that in the moments of first awakening (when we are still partially “asleep”), we often have access to a portion of our brain (consciousness, connection with the universe) that allows us to see answers to problems that have been dogging us or brilliant ideas for stories, poems, etc.

I remember reading once that people who never remember dreams are detached from their emotional self. My husband was like that until he survived cancer. It was a tumultuous time for us prior to the cancer and he was in complete denial.
After cancer he had such vivid dreams it would actually frighten him. I told him it was all the demons moving out. Now he seems to dream fairly regularly but usually it’s not a nightmare.
    great post!

    How cool:

Interestingly enough, years later when I moved to the USA, got married and moved to the suburbs, I found that hilly road… Yep, now that was interesting. 🙂

No recurring dreams these days. Usually pleasant enough dreams with nothing “pressing” to explore.

I’ve have a couple of reoccurring dreams throughout my life. One involves a wobbly staircase, but I have that one much anymore. The other I recently wrote about in a blog, involves a lettuce patch! It sounds like you came to terms with your dreams…

    Eliz
My next blog, I have written is about dreams. I have never had reocurring dreams, but I have some very interesting dreams-may in vivid color-a few were more like visions-which I will be sharing in future blogs. My visions are really crystal clear and I remember them in detail. I have always wanted to get up and write down these dreams-but if I would do this-I would not be able to go back to sleep.!!!

A beautiful blog post Eliz, again your creativity and your inspiration for writing-is so awesome !

Interesting post, Eliz. Didn’t know anything about lucid dreaming (I read the link). I dream in color–in fact, I have always dreamed in color. I find it strange that everyone doesn’t because it’s so normal to me.

I use to not remember my dreams but now I do. I have a notebook to write them down when I wake up. I have never had a re ac-curing dream. I sometimes dream in colors too~

I believe dreams are pieces of a puzzle, that lead us to our destiny. I often ask people, “If dreams don’t mean anything then why were we created to have them and why do we spend half our life sleeping?” I have found through journaling my dreams that God has given us this gift, in order to see into the Spiritual Realm and guide us in the right direction through life. Symbols, colors, and numbers have very Biblical meaning to them and can help us solve the puzzles. The more I study, the more revelation comes. AMEN!!! Keep Dreaming… 😉
