Humor Heals: Have You Laughed Today?

03/04/2011

“Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it.” Bill Cosby

Humor Heals… Find things to make you laugh daily

We’ve all read studies or seen reports that show how humor helps shift our mood and gets our mental juices flowing. We see comedians on TV do their acts and we cackle along with everyone else at their jokes; seemingly easy flowing observations of human mis/behavior. Like you, I love a good laugh and when I am feeling out of sorts, the right joke, a funny gesture or even a certain tone of voice could have me laughing. As I write this, Saturday Night Live is on and the jokes are crazzzzy! But, what I’ve learned since I started my blog is that writing humor isn’t easy. Just because we are funny in our neighborhood, great at the comeback, you know, being a master at repartee, doesn’t mean one can cut it in the world of humor blogging! So, I doff my hat to those bloggers like these humor bloggers or  fill in the _______ who do it well. In between this post, I’ve added some funny stories or jokes or whatever. Hey, humor heals.

The Hand That Smacked The Bride by Anonymous
On a certain bride’s wedding day, the pastor asked the usual question: “Anyone who feels this couple shouldn’t be joined in holy matrimony should speak or forever remain silent.” A young man lifted his hand. Seeing him, the bride fainted. After she was revived, the pastor asked the man,”why did you raise your hand?”
The man replied,”I just wanted to tell you that we couldn’t hear what you were saying in the back of the room.”

When I started writing my blog in 2008, I named it Mirth and Motivation because I had the idea that if I could encourage my readers with humor and some words of wisdom, I’d have a winning blog. I have had a few posts that turned out to be funny but not all. To gain some perspective, I recently had someone review my blog and she said… Why mirth? Your blog deals with serious subjects; life and death matters… philosophical matters. She’s right. I wish I could write about my Rico Suave days, and do a piece on what became of the behinds in Sir Mixalots video but… Hmmmm. 🙂

Humor Heals… Have a good laugh, will you?

When Guts Meets Balls by Anonymous
There is a medical distinction between Guts and Balls. We’ve all heard about people having Guts or Balls. But do you really know the difference between them? In an effort to keep you informed, here are the definitions:
GUTS – Is arriving home late after a night out with the guys, being met by your wife with a broom, and having the Guts to ask: ‘Are you still cleaning, or are you flying somewhere?’
BALLS – Is coming home late after a night out with the guys, smelling of perfume and beer, lipstick on your collar, slapping your wife on the butt and having the Balls to say: ‘You’re next, Chubby.’
I hope this clears up any confusion on the definitions. Medically speaking, there is no difference in the outcome. Both result in death.

Another friend said, if you wrote your blog the way you critique the wrongdoers in the world, it would be a riot to read. Do you really want to read those? Oh well, what can I say. So, for a bit of humor to start your week with a smile, enjoy the jokes above and below. 8)

“A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It’s jolted by every pebble on the road.” Henry Ward Beecher

Humor Heals: have you laughed today?

My friends and family send me stuff all the time because they know I love a good laugh. Above/Below are three that I hope you enjoy. Share a joke or funny story and I’ll add it and credit you. About credit, I have no idea who wrote these as they came via email. Let’s just say I won’t claim ownership and have identified my good friend, Anonymous, as the author. Do you post funny things on your blog? Does it come easy or is it mostly situational? Who is your favorite humorous blogger? Do share! 🙂

Don’t Go There by Anonymous
Prepare to Meet The Creator: The Lord has been appearing to a lot of people lately and talking about His soon return to earth. He appeared to me in 2002. He appeared to Choo Choo and took her to heaven 19 times and hell twice. Now he has appeared to an 18 year old girl, showed her hell, and showed her some popular people burning in hell, including a popular music icon and a former Pope. Please read her testimony and pass this on. Our prayer is that you will not miss heaven.

Again, What are your thoughts? Do share? If you could add a humorous story or a joke to the above, do share them in the comments section and I’ll do the rest. Thank You! 🙂

Positive Motivation Tip: Humor is good for the soul. Laugh long and laugh loud and you’ll live longer.

What a great laugh I had reading your post. I love the name of your blog and thanks for adding how you came up with it. You do talk about philosophy
and real life issues, but your title is perfect. Have a great day, I cannot wait to come read some more. We have storms here tonight so this is short. 🙂

Your blog deals with serious subjects; life and death matters… philosophical matters…
    +
    – but also philosophy knows humor and irony … – it’s a necessary tool for to have a healing distance.

Chuckling here..and when you said finding laughter in pain..when Bill Cosby’s only son was murdered a few years ago that man still continued to bring laughter into our lives!

    hi Eliz,
we had a dialog about the tragic death of the son of Eric Clapton, who fell out of a window in the 53rd in Manhattan. You mentioned his mother Lori too. Life must go on. I found a Youtube video with Lori: theres a funny fragment, educational for men, how to be in a train, when a lady sits in front of you – I’ve set a link in my TEARS IN HEAVEN article …

I have a really hard time being serious especially about myself in writing. It seems nowadays that everybody is trying too hard to be funny, ironic or sarcastic in their blogs and it comes off as just sounding like they’re trying too hard. Some people are naturally really good at it without even knowing that they’re writing humor, but what do I know, I’m a bunny! For humor, I like The Oatmeal (sometimes) and The Bloggess can be pretty funny. A lot of my friends on FB and Twitter are hilarious and use those mediums as their “blog”. I think you are pretty darn funny Elizabeth and you do come off much more serious in your blogging, but that’s your writing voice and that’s okay.

I love the way you write and the title of your blog, especially the mirth and I feel that mirth is part of your voice. Whenever I read your work I can feel your humour and lightness of touch coming through even when the subject is serious. That’s why I like reading your work so much 🙂

My husband and I determined a long time ago that it’s humor that keeps us together. You can get through a lot in this world if you can learn to laugh at yourself, which is hard for some.
My son did stand-up comedy for 6 years and I used to write some of his routines with him. It was a blast.
Most recently the thing that’s been keeping me in stitches is the twitter acct. of @bronxzooscobra. Whoever is behind that is a comic genius! Laugh out loud hilarious!
    Thanks for a morning chuckle!

    Hi,
I try and look at the indignant and at times humorous side of living in Portugal – purely as a means of survival.
I like blogs with variety for example SLTW. I think if you post on a variety of topics there is something for everyone.

I really enjoy your blog and it has never struck me as heavy going.

It amazes me sometimes what topics appeal to people as I made a post recently written from the heart. I was crying as I wrote the post as a close friend was leaving to go back to the UK. I was amazed by the connection it made with people and how they responded. pigletinportugal.wordpress.com/2011/04/01

I made this semi humorous tongue-in-cheek observation about loos in France and it received some very interesting comments.
    pigletinportugal.wordpress.com/2011/01/23

…just heard a lot of crashing and banging outside, as I was writing this…gone to investigate…and there is a man dangling from our telephone poll smoking a cigarette. There’s going to be big trouble in little china if he messes up our line and wipes out our connection!!
I can feel a photoshoot and a piglet moment coming on…better go and come back to this
    Cheers
    PiP

As I mentioned the other day on your 10 Gifts post . . . my sense of humor is my most valuable possession. Without it, I would not be here at all. Here’s to MIRTH and Motivation.

Love the guts and balls joke! Thanks, Eliz.

Ha, ha, ha, love the last photo. What! Life without laughter, is that even possible? Here’s a tip if you want to get some laughs. Wear an outrageous funny hat with a smile, you’ll be amazed at the responses, looks and comments. Now that’s an image even the scrooge can’t help but giggle inside. One of my favorite humorous blogger is HappyKidsHappyMom over at Play 101. She shares great stories, always fresh, funny and true to life’s quirks. Take a looksie for yourselves you’ll see what I mean. Another great post!

Hi, I found your comment on the Worpdress.com “guided transfer” thread and was wondering if you were still thinking about transferring your blog over to self-hosting. If you are, I highly recommend it. You have more flexibility, you can start advertising, it’s more fun, etc.

If you aren’t sure which hosting solution to use, Host Gator is really good (it also has the best prices). You can get 25% off by using this coupon code: gatorhosting25off. As far as the transfer goes, if you give them your login information, one of their technical representatives will do the transfer for you. That’s the easiest way that I’ve found to transfer a blog from WordPress.com to self-hosting.

If you have any other questions, I’d be happy to answer them. You can use the e-mail included with this comment if you’d like.

    Good luck for everything.

Since I am one, if for one second I loose my sense of humor, I am at a loss. Love, humor-being around someone who can never show a sense of humor-is bor…ing!! Love your post, again the creativity and the inspiration shines in your writing-the photos are really good. Keep smiling 🙂

  15. 04/04/2011 9:25 pm

    Loved this post (as usual).

Sorry I’ve been M.I.A. lately! As you know, I’ve had a lot going on and haven’t had a chance to read and respond.. I’m slowly catching up tho! 🙂

Laughter really is the best medicine… take for example my whole condo ordeal.. SO incredibly stressful, and there are times when my boyfriend and I are just SO tense with each other and the situation but he’ll crack a joke and sure enough, it makes things a little better 🙂
