I love being near bodies of water; particularly the ocean. The powerful waves, the crisp air, the lingering smell of salt water, and the lifeforms lurking beneath the blue/green/gray waters; all are part of what fascinates me about the ocean. Over the years, I have lived in or visited coastal areas that harbored bodies of water that were directly on the ocean or fed off the ocean; the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian oceans… Mostly, before digital photography captured our journeys and helped us record and share them instantly.
As I thought about this Weekly Photo Challenge, I imagined myself at the ocean; listening to the sound of the crashing waves and picking up seashells. I’m not a fan of sand or sitting at the beach at the height of summer without any protection but, I love an early morning stroll when most beaches are devoid of revelers. The gentle breeze speaks its own language, and the ocean welcomes us with open arms; beckoning us to dip our toes in the water and sit and watch the movement of the water and the sea gulls… albeit for a little while.
Since my search produced lots of photos of bodies of water but very few that were specifically of the Ocean, I added some shots of beautiful bodies of water that feed into/off the Ocean that I have visited; Normandy Beach, Overlord L’Assault in France; both off the English Channel which is an arm of the Atlantic, Stockholm’s Riddarfjärden off Lake Mälaren, which flows into the Baltic Sea, Monterey Bay of the Pacific Ocean in California, and even a shot I took of Puget Sound which is a complex estuarine with connections to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Pacific Ocean. Maybe a few more. I know … they are not all exactly on the Ocean… but a mother never rejects her wandering children even after they’ve found their own path or home. 🙂

Weekly Photo Challenge: The Ocean - Seattle's Puget Sound feeds into the Pacific & Strait of Juan de Fuca
For this Daily Post assignment on the Ocean, I searched my recent collection of photographs to see if I had any ocean pictures. What happened to all those shots I took in California of the Pacific? And those gorgeous shots of Big Sur? What about shots taken elsewhere of the Atlantic? The Indian Ocean? I barely found anything but I do have one of the beautiful Pacific Ocean taken in Hollywood Beach, Oxnard area in Ventura County… and a few more.
I have taken the liberty to add a few more bodies of water like the English Channel that is an arm of/feeds off the ocean; my picture of Normandy Beach, Overlord L’Assault, and a few more… I know, they are not all exactly on the ocean but all bodies of water that feed off the ocean are part of the ocean. After all, the English Channel is part of the Atlantic Ocean; it separates Great Britain from northern France, joining the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. What oceans have you visited? to enter Europe.

To the British Channel:
monthly hundreds try to manage
(hidden in cars and trains)
to come from Africa via France
to Great Britain.
Police is watching the tunnel entrance
which leads under the sea to the
English shore. I don’t know,
why UK is better than France.
I would prefer Baguette and cheese,
not fish and chips …

I just have two thing to say: Great saying and awesome pictures. It made me blue : ) …. I miss the ocean. There’s nothing like it and you gotta get in it from time to time to recharge your energy…Who knows… maybe in the weekend! Cheers!
Another great post. And the photos are beautiful. Trips to the shore were always favorite family vacations. I love it! Seeing your pics makes me want to plan a trip now!
I also love being around the water. A creek or stream, an ocean or waterfall. I even love the rain. I believe 2/3 of the earth is covered by water and our bodies or about 50% water. You can live longer without food than without water. I am thinking a trip to the beach is in my near future. Thanks for sharing your great pictures of the wonderful bodies of water you have experienced. enJOY your day!

Having just recently moved from a beach town to the high desert, your photos and words were quite touching! I love it here, but I do miss the heavy, wet ocean air… the salty smell of the waves… and the feeling of the sand beneath my feet!
I love looking at the ocean…it’s so peaceful. I also like being on a slow moving boat…however I am afraid to swim in the ocean and lake because I’m fish-phobic.

Very lovely photos! Right now we live a few miles from the Gulf of Mexico, not technically an ocean, but it oughtta be :o) I love the salt air, the sand and seashells, and there is something mesmerizing about the way the sun sparkles on the water.
