Wishful Thinking: Activities We Wish Will Keep Us Fit…

26/03/2011

“Destiny grants us our wishes, but in its own way, in order to give us something beyond our wishes.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Wishful Thinking: Activities to keep us fit... Sleeping

Wishful Thinking: Activities to keep us fit... Sitting

When I read the prompt from the Daily post page about non-exercise activities we wished would keep us fit, I had to chuckle. I’m sure many of us have read those silly scam ads that promise to help us lose weight while we sleep and, hey, we all wish certain things would happen with the snap of a finger. What I liked about the prompt is that it got our creative juices flowing and many of my fellow bloggers left their ideas in the forum. I have listed them below in three groupings… Come back later for more commentary from me. Updated below. 😉

Another thing this exercise got me thinking about is Erica’s post on finding a cure for writer’s block, and you know, the list here helps. That and a little prayer can go a long way. Of course, we know wishful thinking isn’t enough… We still have to move our feet and do the work. But on those days when nothing shows up, a bit of creative fun helps.

From the suggestions I noted, the top three below confirmed that sleeping ruled, followed by sitting to type/write and, of course, eating. I thought daydreaming would top the chart but, between sleeping and blogging, we covered a lot of ground. 🙂 Yeah, in case you’re wondering, I listed the number of times I read a particular suggestion/idea… It does read like a repetitive poem or the lyrics to a bad song. Doesn’t it? Hmmm, procrastinating or maybe research should be on the list. LOL! Below, in three takes/groupings, is a breakdown of what my fellow bloggers offered Scott as a keep-fit-without-exercise-wish.

Sleeping. Sleeping. Sleeping. Napping. SLEEPING. SLEEPING. Sleeping.
Sitting at my computer. Typing. Sitting at the computer. Typing. Sitting at the computer. Sitting at my computer.
Eating! Eating. Eating. Eating. Eating. Eating.
Riding the back of a motorcycle. Biking. Riding on the back of a Harley Davidson. Biking.
Daydreaming. Daydreaming. Daydreaming.

The next batch included related wishes that were suggested fewer times. I had imagined these would top the list but… they didn’t. Reading, writing and blogging do go hand in hand and I suppose because we do it daily, it was an obvious choice. I presume many wanted to suggest something original or humorous. Another interesting point in this grouping is the association of drinking with writing and reading… We all know of famous authors who drank a lot but I wonder if the drinking came before or after a creative burst of activity… What do you think? Hmmm 🙂

Reading. Reading. Reading.
Blogging! Blogging.
Winning! Drinking
Writing. writing.

Wishful Thinking: Activities to keep us fit... Praying

The final grouping below are the one offs; the lone ranger suggestions that also made me smile and say – why didn’t I or others think of this one. Me likes them… very much. As you can see, a simple fun exercise became fodder for a blog post and that is the mystical way creativity can show up. Don’t discount fun and play as they are great writing resources; the same goes for sticking to it and following your muse to the next great screenplay. If you haven’t done so, play this activities wish game and please read the New Yorker post via Erica’s screenwriter’s cure. Both are … brilliant!

Playing Video Games
Watching sports
Listening to music
Photographing
Blinking.
Peeing….. 😉

On a final note, I added the following to the collection: What others would you suggest? Breathing… 😉 Bathing. Talking. Driving. Thinking. Praying. Yep, a little prayer can definitely go a long way to getting us fit and creative. 🙂

What other things do you think would be a great addition to the list? What are your thoughts?

Positive Motivation Tip: Wishful thinking can lead to careful action and positive results if we move our feet and follow our wishes.

Ooo! I’ve got a good one! HUGS! Can you just imagine it! Kids always love to hug grown ups around the thighs, grown folks hug around the shoulders. If I could get more hugs around my waist I’d have the perfect lil’ hourglass shape! Wishful thinking? It could happen…Tee-hee..:)

Well Eliz, I think in a way praying does help to keep us fit. For me it helps to lift the worries I have and give them up to the One that can take care of my needs. In turn this helps to take some of the weight (worries) off of my shoulders that tend to weigh me down. Just a different kind of fitness 🙂

If eating and blogging kept me fit . . . I’d be in good shape. 😉

We must have had our minds together mixing thoughts for today’s blog, as I posted a new blog today “Writers Mindset” ! I really like your list for getting us motivated for not only moving our feet-but for tapping our fingers-for coming up with new ideas for writing our blogs. I find having the desire to write, is my first motivator!! it’s all in putting “pen to paper” !! 🙂

As much as I love blogging, it has been hell on my waist line. I think meditation is a great way to get fit. I work on that regularly. Still, nothing beats a good walk to clear the cobwebs and do something physical at the same time.

    Two other ideas…
The passive way: lying back and watching clouds drift by.
The active way: giving yourself (at a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, literacy program, etc.)
Both ways will stimulate a special portion of your brain that soothes the soul while it encourages creativity. 🙂
I’m having a ball in NH…loving the stress-free time with daughter and grandson!

Sitting by a body of water watching it flow by. Gives peace of mind and allows creativity to flourish. Even a fountain can do the trick. The sound of water is extremely soothing. 🙂

I think those things DO help to kee us fit–because when we are happy, rested, and chasing after the dreams just behind our eyes…we are more likely to keep moving forward, reaching and grasping for joy.
