Three Gifts: Hearts. Awards. Hops... Healing Waters by KAllenKay

Do you know anyone who has had a heart attack or suffers from heart disease? Do you know anyone who suddenly passed away from an attack? Well… I do and I have. My father died suddenly of a massive attack years ago and … I am a survivor. For several years now, I have been a volunteer, spokesperson one year, and huge supporter of the American Heart Association and Go Red for Women group in my area. I have raised money and donated to the cause and whenever possible, I have spoken about my personal experience. You may read my story here. 1 in 3 Women die of heart failure and yet most of us don’t talk about it; like it’s a big secret to hide. Recently, my local chapter asked if I could share an upcoming event with you and I said yes. If you are available, interested in heart health, or simply need information, join in.  One cannot say enough about the gift of life, the gift of friendship, and the gift of enjoying simple things; like a blog hop. 🙂

For More Information on the ✿♡✿Go Red Event, the ✿♡✿Versatile Blogger Award and the ✿♡✿Blog Hop see links below. Your comments and questions are always appreciated. Thank you!

My good friend and blogger at The Reason You Come- Beat of My Drum, recently nominated me for a versatile blogger award. Stop by later when I have loaded all my awardees as I want to share this with my blogging buddies. UPDATE: Blogs are now listed below and I will add any I missed. Okay, I awarded the versatile blogger award to the following bloggers below. Thank you all for your comments and goodwill. Sorry Russelle, I didn’t go for the seven random facts about me except the big one I shared about my heart story above… enough for now. Feel free, all of you, to pass on the award and I will try to inform you that the award is yours to take and share.  As always, comments are appreciated! Gracias! Merci! Danke! Thanks!

    Hi,
You’ve made me stop and think. I did not realise one in three women died of heart problems. My husband had 3 stents put in his heart 3 yrs ago. He is lucky to be alive. He only went in for a routine check up and they discovered a 95% blockage in one artery, 75% and 45% in the other two. He had been climbimg down to a beach the day before…scary! He showed no outward signs of being ill.
God works in mysterious ways as a persistant little voice in my mind kept telling me to make an appointment for Mr P, and although he tried to squirm out of it…I made him go!
I hope the lunch goes well 🙂
    Kind regards
    PiP

  2. 22/03/2011 4:05 am

Thanks for your comment PiP! Your story is also one that women share about themselves too. Even when my heart was failing, I had no clue and thought it was stress. Fortunately, like you did for your hubby, I kept getting that niggling feeling to seek help and get a 2nd and 3rd opinion.
Thanks for your feedback and if this helps one person get a check-up then I’m grateful. 🙂
    Enjoy the Versatile Award.
    Eliz

    • 22/03/2011 4:19 am

Whoops I forgot about the award… I was thinking of sad times.
Just looked at the list…I’m not sure I can find 15 😳 you have already listed many of the ones I would have chosen…does that eliminate me?
      Cheers
      PiP

      • 22/03/2011 4:46 am

No, you can give it to the same people… no worries at all. Honestly, you can modify the rules too. 🙂 Thanks again! Eliz

    • 22/03/2011 4:20 am

thanks for the award…muita obrigada 🙂

  3. 22/03/2011 6:09 am

Thank you for the award Elizabeth! I feel honored to be surrounded by such illustrious fellow bloggers, and have discovered some new blogs I need to follow from your list.

    ~RJ

    • 23/03/2011 6:32 am

The sentiments are mutual. I have enjoyed wonderful exchanges with all listed and I’ve never felt comfortable just picking a few people for something all will enjoy. Share it with your other blogger friends. 🙂
      Thank you,
      Eliz

  5. 22/03/2011 8:32 am

Awww thanks for the award!! 🙂

  6. 22/03/2011 10:06 am

Thanks for the award…and the blog re: heart health. My youngest brother died of sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 48, and there is a history of heart problems in my family, so this is a subject near and dear to my “heart.” Thank you.
    Cecelia

    • 23/03/2011 6:35 am

I’m sorry to read about your brother and grateful that this resonates with you too. Thank you for sharing your story. That history is a silent killer of sorts; often regardless of our lifestyles. Thank God for mercies… 🙂
      Eliz

  7. 22/03/2011 10:08 am

Wow Elizabeth! That was a frightening story. I’m so glad you persisted until they found out what was wrong. My friend had a scare last fall. She had a cold and it seemed to hang on for weeks. She was afraid it was turning into bronchitis because she was having bouts of shortness of breath. Then she began to get twinges in her shoulder. (symptoms are so different for women and we need to know this.) She ended up in the hospital w/ a 90% blockage in her primary artery. They put in a stint and she is doing great right now. So glad both of you got the help and treatment needed!

As for the award… I am very honored. I must decline or defer for now due to time constraints. Thank you so much for including me.
    xob

    • 23/03/2011 6:38 am

Yes and it is remarkable that these stories abound… We need more word on the subtle, insidious ways it kills women. I hesitated to do this because it is not my way… But I felt deep inside that if it helps one person, then I have done my job… Thank you! 🙂
Oh no worries about the award… use it when you have a minute; no rush 🙂
      Eliz

  8. 22/03/2011 10:28 am

Eliz…you are like a bottomless well of goodness and knowledge and experience…we who read your posts are fortunate indeed. 🙂
First of all, thank you SO much for the kudos…I will definitely try to pass the award along…I’m going to visit my daughter in NH at the end of the week :), pulled my back out Sunday afternoon and can’t move or sit as I would like :(, and am already feeling overwhelmed by all I have to do to get me ready for the trip and my husband ready for me not to be here. 🙂

Regarding heart disease…THANK YOU!!!! I know the information you provided will help many. My husband had his first heart attack at age 36…we had three small children…it was a scary time…but we got through it and grew stronger. He’s had 3 more since then, but is still hanging in there…fly-fishing when he can and painting every day…the latter is a new hobby he discoverred two years ago…we all have undiscovered talents and strengths. 🙂

    • 23/03/2011 6:39 am

You’re the best too Viv and i send you healing light for a speedy recovery… Thanks again for the feedback. We all have either a personal tale with HD or know someone affected by it… I appreciate your share. 🙂

      Merci,
      Eliz

  12. 22/03/2011 4:44 pm

So sorry for the loss of your father and to have a mom who never quite recovered cannot be anything less that hugely stressful. I find that the love of your child can be of so much great comfort in a time of stress.

But then on top of all that to go through the major surgery, recover and get to this place that we are today? That is some amazing stamina and outlook. I knew you were amazing but to learn these bits about you each time I come here is so inspiring. Truly, I admire you.

I, too, have a bit of a heart issue – nothing like you – but I have an extra heartbeat (electrical impulse) that if it exacerbates could someday cause an enlarged heart (after all the heart is a muscle) which could cut short my life expectancy. I am self-monitored without medications currently because it actually improved when I was pregnant and after I gave birth! Very strange!

Thank you for including me in the Versatile Blogger Award. I am honored and humbled. ((Hugs))

    • 23/03/2011 6:47 am

      Oh Karen,
Thank you very much… your comment brought tears to my eyes and then I remember how much you give of yourself too… I’m grateful for life, for my children and more. I am also glad you are attentive to your heart and watch it carefully… I still do.
Enjoy the award and share it with others who visit your blog… More later. 🙂
      Thank you,
      Eliz

Thank you Nancy for your comment and visit.
I appreciate matters of the heart and health and though I don’t write on health as much, it is always on my mind. Do you have a health blog?
I will return the visit shortly. 🙂

This very helpful information for all especially for women. Good things come in threes so it’s good you added more.
Thank you for stepping out and sharing your story as I know you don’t like to do so on the blog unless necessary.
I hope all take a moment to have a simple heart check; one never knows when it sneaks in.
    B

    • 23/03/2011 7:00 am

I pray that everybody gets a check up at least once a year; especially us women. Heart disease and it’s impact can be sudden and final. Any effort we make counts and can save our lives. 🙂
I tend not to do this sort of thing on my blog but this is a good, life-saving cause… It’s National Nutrition Month and Women’s History Month as well…
      Definitely timely 😉
      Thank you,
      Eliz

My dad didn’t die of a heart disease but it was cardiopulmonary attack that became his primary cause of death. Until now, it still chokes me up thinking of my dad. Thank you for continuously sharing your thoughts and experience.

Thank you as well for the VBA! It was totally unexpected! I am truly grateful. Thank you for being a constant source of motivation and inspiration.

    • 23/03/2011 7:05 am

I’m sorry to hear about your dad and I can relate too because I do get sad when I think of my dad’s sudden passing and all that came afterwards… I hope this, at least, will help you remember to get checked and to know you’re not alone… We share this history now. 🙂
Enjoy the award and add it to your blog proudly. Share it with others when you have a chance… no pressure.
I’m glad to see you here and hope you do get back to blogging again 🙂

      Thanks again,
      Eliz

  20. 23/03/2011 10:17 am

I agree, I too admire you. Your story tugged at my heart strings. I can relate to loosing a loved one. Your story is both inspiring and informative, we women carry so much and yet we have the tendency of putting ourselves last. I’ll admit I’m quick about getting my loved ones to the doctors when their health needs looking into but when it comes to my own health well, I’m not so attentive or quick about getting checked. But after reading this post, I realize I must take my heart & health more seriously. Thank you for sharing your story. Your sooooo sweet! 🙂 Thank you for the Versatile Blogger award. Sally Fields, I love her!

Thank you too Soapbird for your kindness and support… Every time I add a post to my blog, I remember the story you shared with me… and it keeps my spirits up. We all can benefit from regular check-ups.

    Elizabeth,
Thank you for the Versatile Blogger Award. I am honored.

I also thank you for sharing your story and shedding light on heart health. I’m sorry to hear about the passing of your father and your mother’s illness. My family has also been affected by heart disease. My grandmother passed away eleven years ago from congestive heart failure and my aunt is currently dealing with heart disease.

Your story highlights the need to to be diligent and persistent when it comes to our health. I’m so glad that you continued to look for answers when your symptoms continued.

    Again, I thank you.

    • 29/03/2011 3:44 am

      Thank you Wyletter,
I appreciate your comment and that you also recognize the importance of these check ups. As some of the research I’ve read shows, sometimes, the symptoms are negligible or mimic other things in women… We must pay attention for sure. 🙂
Hope all is going well with the move?
      Eliz
