Mustard Seed: Faith in small things…
Staring at the bags of grocery items, large and small, the question lingered in the air: What is the smallest thing? It couldn’t be my avocados, pimientos or kumato tomatoes. I’d just read the prompt and thought … What a great topic! But what small thing shall we tackle? All I could fathom was the Mustard Seed Parable and Faith in the Sputtering Car; those two faith stories would have to suffice.
Faith in the Sputtering Car
Jane merged unto the highway and made her way to the bridge. Suddenly, the engine sputtered, shuddered like a wet dog and stalled. It stalled in the middle lane with cars hurtling by at 60-65 mph. Quickly, she put the blinkers on, turned the ignition off and on and started the car again; heart in mouth, prayers on lips, she coaxed the little black tiger to keep moving. “Please don’t let me down,” she begged. “Don’t croak on the bridge; get us to the next town.” Somewhere in car heaven, it heard her pleas and stumbled on.
At Exit 10, a little old man refused to yield which meant she had to move along. At Exit 12, she hobbled off; with 4 more stalls and 2 black outs, accosted by 3 screaming louts, she found herself in BJs auto lot. She called the dealer, they sent a healer and soon enough towed tiger off. Jane called home, she’d had it rough. Her ride will come… not soon enough. Then Jane remembered; my faith in little tiger paid off … my prayer worked. It hobbled on, it stumbled through, it gasped and gagged and stalled a few … but it didn’t croak on the bridge. – It’d made it; moved from there to here… By Elizabeth Obih-Frank.

He set another parable before them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field; which indeed is smaller than all seeds. But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches.”

Your story reminded me of a time when my car spluttered and almost died on a busy dual carriageway with nowhere to pull over. With no headlights on my car I was worried that another vehicle would run into me on the dark road. I put up a plea to the angels who guided me to a remote house in the distance. My car made it to the house before giving up it’s mission. I knocked on the door of the house to discover that the owner’s son was a mechanic and was on his way home from work! An hour later with my car fixed, I was safely back on the road. Divine intervention at its best.

Wow! It is a very similar story and I concur on the DI part. I think it’s every driver’s nightmare to have a car stall on the highway; no fun especially as people really keep that foot on the accelerator and speed ahead without thinking of the possibility of a disabled car in front of them. 🙂

Thank you so very much for creating this space – esp. for me as I struggle with budgeting my time. I want to write more, but i am drowning sometimes it seems in the ocean of things that also must be done at the omputer: read the blogs of those I care about, comment constructively, work on my own site, keep up with social network contacts needed in order to promote my writing aspirations, and keep up writing a daily post. Those are all things i lopve to do, but I am having a hard time knowing how to budget it with the time I have. Anyway, I’ll link up and get involved in yet another blog/blog hop! 😀

This is a powerful quote with a deep mystery to it. It has inspired me to write my most latest blog on the subject of faith and choice.
I love the sputtering story about the car. Boy do I have numerous car stories that needed a lot of faith to get home. e.g. having a quarter tank of gas (no key to get the lock off the gas tank) in a 1975 Buick Electra, stuck in a traffic jam (because of an accident) on the Brooklyn Bridge and Holland Tunnel on a Sunday night, while trying to get back to Philly to work that night in 3hrs.
It certainly was a moment of faith and a good mechanic at the Jersey Turnpike that saved the day.
I read your post and it was excellent! I enjoyed reading about your journey and your acts/tests in faith. It is a powerful quote and one I like to have near me because it also speaks to the wisdom of the teachings; the mountains move when we really need it and it is for our growth.:-)
