Seattle is one of my most favorite cities in the US. It has many wonderful things to see; historic sites and exciting places to visit. One that draws plenty of attention every year and finds refuge under the Aurora Bridge is — the Fremont Troll. The Fremont Troll is a sculptural rendering of a mythological Scandinavian creature known to live under bridges, in caves, or in the forest. They were believed to be green, scary, giant sized or dwarf-like creatures, and they loved bright jewelry, children, women and human flesh; yes, human flesh and the odd VW as the picture shows. 🙂
The idea of using the space under the Aurora Bridge was proposed to the Fremont Arts Council in 1989. The Aurora Bridge was built in 1932 and, over the years, the area under the bridge had become a dumping ground for junk. Many residents in Fremont wanted to see something creative in the space. A national competition ensued and the winning idea, presented by a team led by sculptor Steve Badanes, was the Fremont Troll under the bridge.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Refuge -- Fremont Troll Under the Aurora Bridge and guests
The Fremont Troll is made from rebar steel, wire and 2 tons of ferroconcrete; it was completed in about 7 weeks. Apparently, there are other trolls in the Fremont area; a highly creative and fun neighborhood in Seattle. I did not see any other trolls during my visit but made sure to visit the Aurora Bridge and take the pictures you see. The day I went to see it, lots of people kept coming, posing, taking pictures and hanging around; finally, I had one moment to capture it alone… Ah, the refuge of being alone with a giant troll. 🙂 What are your thoughts? Great idea for a sculpture under the bridge where the Fremont Troll has his refuge; he’s a huge troll!
Yes, he is quite huge. What makes it all so fascinating is that the road under the bridge is quite narrow so you can’t avoid seeing him and the enormity of the piece. I’ve seen other better photos that truly show his size. 🙂

It was a tough one to work on because I have been looking through my own photos for the challenge and sometimes, I am stumped or tempted to reach for one I’ve used before. I do have to take new pictures so I can keep up with the challenge. 🙂

Yes, the neat thing about him is that the sculptor and his team added a humorous quirk to the project and added the car element. I liked that part when it was first pointed out to me… 🙂

Isn’t that a terrific idea? I loved it too and it has turned into a great sightseeing event for visitors to the area. Fremont in general is very art oriented and a great place to walk around too. I just love Seattle. 🙂
