Weekly Photo Challenge: Boundaries… Plus Neighbors
I live in the suburbs; in an area with plenty of white tailed deer. They don’t care about fences, walls or any other boundaries; when they see food or shrubs they want, they go get it. They are my neighbors of sorts. They are not scared of me or anyone else for that matter. Our history goes way, way back. Well, for me it does. I’ll explain in the next paragraph. You see, before homes and people encroached on their territory, they owned the land. When homes were built in the 1950s and on, they moved deeper into the woods but never left town… Why should they? Wouldn’t you stick around to protect your land or at least salvage what’s left for your progeny? Did I already say they owned the land? Exactly…. and they still do.

As for my personal history with my neighbors, the deer that is, we connected when I decided to bring Holland to my home. I planted over a thousand tulip bulbs over a three year period… Yes, in 3 1/2 years they were gone… Bambi and his/her relatives came to dinner… often. They decimated my garden and ate everything but the poisonous plants. I tried everything short of… Nothing worked. Even one avid gardener friend, who lived further up north, claimed she planted extras and they would have some and leave some for her to enjoy. Her deer neighbors must not be street smart NY deer, I figured… Why leave some behind right? Finally, I said sayonara to my tulip bulbs and planted some shrubs.

When the weekly photo challenge was introduced, I was excited because I love looking at photographs. I take them too but I am still a novice at photography. I was looking forward to simply checking out what more skilled photographers had to offer, and I figured I’ll wait until I’ve set up/learned how to use my new Canon SLR before submitting any pictures. I’ve been on the fence about it…

Boundaries & Neighbor: Dear deer... how now?
Well today, I looked out my kitchen window; lo and behold, after a 2-3 week lull, my neighbors were back. I have to admit that as much as our shared memory hasn’t been a party-over-here experience, I was glad to see that they were back and hanging out in my backyard like they never left town. Boundaries? What boundaries … remember? They own the place. The pictures you see are my attempts at capturing their visit today. Taken with my old Nikon Coolpix. Great pics! I remember a similar scene from when I would visit my father. Where in NY do you live? I was born and raised in upstate NY and lived there my whole life until about 5 years ago.

When we lived in CT in the house with 100 blueberry bushes, I had a huge vegetable garden, and one year I even had a little bit of corn planted. The raccoons LOVED it…and they loved our garbage cans also. Maybe I’ll write a post about my early morning encounter with a raccoon.
Regarding deer…when we moved to Colorado Springs almost 15 years ago, we were amazed at the number of deer that roamed through our neighborhood…and as you say…it was THEIR neighborhood first. One snowy morning we looked out on the back deck…there was a buck, curled up on the deck. What a surprise! I’ll see if my husband can find the pics and I’ll post those as well.

Sorry to hear about losing all your tulips – the deer obviously found them very tasty! Who could resist a little bambi face like the close-up pic. You did a great job of taking those photos Eliz.

I’d say you have deer in your yard and they do not see boundaries…wow! For the most part the deer by us stay back out in the woods and do come to drink from the lake, but quietly. Thinking it may be the presence of our watchful dogs guiding their property. Great photos and I am learning and excited about the photo challenge also 🙂

Absolutley beautiful photos, I enjoyed looking at these photos. Deer are so awesome, with their hard built structure, and those adorable big black eyes. The only fear of them, is running into one of them when driving around those corners on the country dark roads at night. They are gorgous animals.
What a beautiful place you live in. And to share your space with such graceful creatures is a real blessing.
(Would you like to swop your herd of deer with my neighbour who has absolutely no idea of what the word ‘boundries’ means…grrr…)

I wish I had boundaries issues with some cute white tail deer! or anything else! I did come home to find a hawk in my driveway once. But that’s about it since I moved here…
This is just amazing that you see these deer in your yard! Enjoyed your pix. When we get into our house, I will share pix of the pelicans and other water fowl which cruise the canal in our back yard :o)
Your neighbors are lovely! I especially love how you captured them doing what it is that they do…we have a few neighbors of our own, they keep their distance, never coming too close to the house. Catching them with the camera has proved to be difficult. Thanks for sharing you pics are beautiful.
When I lived in Utah for 3 years, the deer would run out of food in the mountains and come into the valley to eat. They have to have food. Since I am from Arkansas where we still have so many protected forests and state parks, we don’t get deer in town often, so it’s a real treat for me to see deer. I think they are beautiful creatures and you are lucky to get to take such beautiful photos of them. I’m back home in Arkansas now and loving it!
I am in a neighborhood and we see deer all of time. Once our dog growled at them.
Our closest neighbor on one side decided a couple of years ago that she needed to feed them. She brought them right up to her patio for a full buffet. They in turn ate everything visible above the snow in my yard as an appetizer or dessert. I try all the normal things including Niteguard. Last year there were four and this year two so far have been hit by cars resulting in their dead bodies laying in front of our house while totaled cars are towed away. Then the city and the state argue for several days as to which entity should remove it from the road. Everyone takes photos and see Bambi unless they deal with them on a regular basis. Tough discussion. 🙂
Oh nice surprise comment! I haven’t read this one in a while. Sadly, many of the deer that used to visit and hang out are no longer around. I suspect they’ve been displaced, killed or relocated. As man expands into their territory and they get run over by SUVs, their absence is felt. TY for revisiting this post. It brings back memories.
That’s neat that you get to enjoy deer in your backyard. Many years ago we had some deer and turkeys too, but I think it is getting too built up for them to come our way any more.
Wow! Those deer are so beautiful! We have a couple of black squirrels that live in the trees in our front yard. I love watching them chase the birds off so they can steal the food from the bird feeders!
