Monday Musings: On Optimism and A Little More…

31/01/2011

โ€œA pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.โ€ Winston Churchill

Monday Musings: Optimism is... a brightly colored wrapper on a barren farm

The Question: Are you an Optimist or Pessimist? Optimist, Pessimist, Realist, Fatalist, Sit-On-The-Fence-ist. ๐Ÿ˜‰ At any given point in our lives, we find ourselves fully engaged or wallowing in one of those descriptions. Does it matter? Yes and No. Yes? How we view our world and live in it has an impact on the choices we make and on others around us. No? if our outlook is constantly pessimistic, much won’t matter until we choose to respond differently. The choice is ours.

On some of my community sites, I describe myself thus: I am a mother of two, sister to many and a card-carrying certified optimist. My family and friends are golden because our love and trust is unequivocal. I’ve traveled, I’ve lived, I’ve had my share of happiness and hurt, and I remain grateful for God’s grace in my life… Even certified optimists experience their share of pain… Still, I choose optimism. ๐Ÿ™‚

As complex beings, we vacillate from sunny to sad and back again. Some of us find a middle ground and stay there. Others find more reasons to embrace joy and linger there a little longer or vise versa. This is our nature… I believe.ย  At the end of the day, what really matters is what you decide to do with your day, your time, your life, your exchanges, your connections, your emotions, your pronouncements and how much of it makes a difference.ย  Read the poem below and the news on Google’s Speak2Tweet initiative for Egypt. What are your thoughts?

โ€œIf you will call your troubles experiences, and remember that every experience develops some latent force within you, you will grow vigorous and happy, however adverse your circumstances may seem to be.โ€ John Heywood

Optimistic Man by Nazim Hikmet
as a child he never plucked the wings off flies
he didn’t tie tin cans to cats’ tails
or lock beetles in matchboxes
or stomp anthills
he grew up
and all those things were done to him
I was at his bedside when he died
he said read me a poem
about the sun and the sea
about nuclear reactors and satellites
about the greatness of humanity

Speak2Tweet
Google has initiated a quick and easy way for Egyptians to get internet access without actually being on the internet. Called Speak2Tweet, it allows people to call a number with a message and immediately it is translated into words and tweeted. See Google’s explanation below…:

Itโ€™s already live and anyone can tweet by simply leaving a voicemail on one of these international phone numbers (+16504194196 or +390662207294 or +97316199855) and the service will instantly tweet the message using the hashtag #egypt. No Internet connection is required. People can listen to the messages by dialing the same phone numbers or going to twitter.com/speak2tweet.

How do you handle situations in your life? What makes you happy and what makes you sad? Which of the two(happy/sad) lingers longer in your heart?
Positive Motivation Tip: Look for the positive in the poison; even a viper has its usefulness by teaching us to be vigilant.

This is one question that I don’t have to think about for even a nano-second…I am an OPTIMIST!!!! In every pore of my being! In the deepest recesses of my mind!!! I don’t think there is one cell in my body that is pessimistic! And I know I am so very lucky to be formed this way. ๐Ÿ™‚
    Thanks Eliz.

    • 01/02/2011 2:09 am

Amen to that! Excellent Viv and I can confirm that because I know you too. ๐Ÿ™‚ What I was trying to get across is that we get to choose and being optimistic doesn’t mean we are always in nirvana…
It simply means we have trained ourselves to see the bigger picture and choose the positive… This has been my lifelong approach and you know what? It works. I am an optimist too; certified actually Lol! ๐Ÿ™‚

“The Question: Are you an Optimist or Pessimist? Optimist, pessimist, realist, sit-on-the-fence-ist. ” I loved your statement here. I love the photo of expression as well, I like to say I am an optimistic person.

Hi and thank you for your feedback. I updated the post and added fatalist because it fits with the subject. I believe like-minded draws like-minded and our connection has been a good one too.
I see you have been working hard to catch since joining the challenge a week ago. Hurray for optimism and keep blogging away! Go for it! ๐Ÿ™‚

Optimism keeps us going because we believe tomorrow will bring a better day.
Tied in with optimism is a sense of hope and faith. Love your inspirational spirit.

Hope and faith are very, very important tools for life in general too and they have helped carry me through difficult times. I agree that optimism is closely tied, actually intertwined with hope and faith and grace… we need them all. ๐Ÿ™‚
      Thanks girl!

So true… no man is an island… and we all need to communicate. ๐Ÿ™‚

Being an optimist leads to a much a happier life … being upbeat and positive overshadows the opposite by far!
Wishing you a very happy day!

It is definitely better to see the glass half full! The different events we experience in life can make up or break. They can make us bitter or increase our character. An optimist always benefits with a good attitude and increases in character. They make it in life!

    • 02/02/2011 5:55 am

That is true… though sometimes I wonder:-)
I have to say that posting cheers me on ๐Ÿ™‚

My husband likes to say he’s a realist, to which I say… a realist is just a pessimist with an attitude. ๐Ÿ™‚

I am and always have been an optimist. I honestly believe I wouldn’t be alive today if I weren’t. I have spent a great deal of effort ridding my life of pessimists lately. It has enriched my life! I highly recommend a lot of space between yourself and pessimists… or psychic vampires as I call them. You will more easily maintain a sense of equilibrium without all that negativity in your life.
Thanks for another thought provoking post!

Love it! I am doing same in my own way… Life is about community and support.
Without it we are really alone. ๐Ÿ™‚

it’s the only way to go.-optimism. seems hard sometimes, that’s when a deep breath or a walk or run (depending on what floats your optimistic boat) helps..

Another great post Eliz – thank you.

Love the Winston Churchill quote. Although not exactly on topic, it make me think of another quote – “I used to be decisive – but now I’m not so sure!” ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you Julie… nothing looks off topic from here.
Fine to comment on anything that catches our fancy really.

I’ve often wondered what I am, between the two. In general, I’m an optimist. I’ve always been a happy person, and my optimism has gotten me through some heartaches. Here’s the twist, though: I become a pessimist when everything, or almost everything, in my life goes right. It’s what I’m experiencing now, actually. I found love, things fell into place, and suddenly, my optimism is now tainted with pessimism. I know fear is to blame. When things in my universe are all well and good, I become terribly afraid that I’ll lose them, sooner or later. It’s a defense mechanism, I guess. I know it’s unhealthy, and I know I should remain optimistic, ESPECIALLY when all is well in my life!

Thanks for sharing this! ๐Ÿ™‚ Optimism vs. pessimism has been a topic of several conversations between me and my husband, as well as a subject of self-analysis.

    • 03/02/2011 2:02 am

Thank you too for stopping by.
I believe we shift some depending on events but at our core, we are more one than the other.
Oh, I answered this already and it’s showing up differently on the backdoor.
      LOL! ๐Ÿ˜‰

You are not alone… We sit and wonder, when the flood gates of abundance shares its gifts, when the shoe is going to drop. Why me? Fear is a huge part of it and then our memories of past experiences take over and torture us some more… Prayer and surrender helps. Honestly, we all deserve good and could use some now. ๐Ÿ™‚

I loved your article. It is so true that whether you are an optimist or a pessimist doesn’t really matter unles you decide to change!
I loved the description you put on here of the way you describe yourself!
I have a little pessimist inside me that fights the optmist I choose to be. Excuse or not, the pessimist was formed inside me as a child – a ‘precious’ gift from my mother (wink, wink) !
I have lived around negative people all my life in one form or another. Yes, I have bad days, but these people thrive on it.

It makes it very hard – but I’m not going to give up. I have worked hard on my optimistic attitude and I know it’s worth fighting for. I love life – by choice!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful information!
    Tammy
