Compassion: We All Need Some…

03/10/2010

“A compassionate person develops an eye for spotting the qualities that make each person special. Even when others are at their lowest ebb, it is possible to help them restore their self-belief by keeping a firm, clear vision of their goodness and specialties. Taking a gentle encouraging approach, I must never give up on anyone.” Innerspace

No matter where I go or what I do, there are constant reminders of why we, as humans, owe each other a compassionate word; an act of kindness. There is enough strife and sadness in the world that it behooves us to find space in our hearts to show and share some moments of compassion. We could all benefit from a verbal hug or two… I bet the same goes for you too. Right? What makes us all special? Our unique, individual personalities, our personal stories and journeys, our histories, our sadness and joy, our dreams and wishes … us. So, why would anyone want to negate this basic premise? I am who I am and so are you. Why must I become like you or be you? No, Thank you!

“Our task must be to free ourselves… by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.” Albert Einstein

Daily, we hear or read about terrible events that challenge us to re-establish our desire for global good. I remember Tyler, Phoebe, Mathew, and thousands more hurt by hatred, caustic words, violence, those who suicide gave an out and it pains me. If we were more sensitive to the joys and pain of our brothers and sisters and less vengeful and hurtful, our world would radiate with bliss… Age should never be an excuse for insensitivity as we all feel pain and hurt. Each day we get up, we have an opportunity to serve with grace. If we know other people; friends or family walking in darkness, or that are suicidal, we must compassionately comfort and guide them to seek appropriate care… We all deserve a chance at an abundant life.

“Love, compassion, and concern for others are real sources of happiness. With these in abundance, you will not be disturbed by even the most uncomfortable circumstances. If you nurse hatred, however, you will not be happy even in the lap of luxury. Thus, if we really want happiness, we must widen the sphere of love. This is both religious thinking and basic common sense.” Dalai Lama

I believe that the happiness we deny our fellow man is happiness we deny ourselves. We cannot thrive in a universe that is out of balance or out of kilter because of inequalities and greed. We need to stop and share our goodwill with others. A smile, a gentle glance, a kind word … all help. I gathered a few quotes and photos for this short post. It would be wonderful if we could all learn to say less, do more for each other and be more compassionate. Don’t give up!

I can see you are feeling the pain of the most recent senseless suicide caused by hate, as am I. I wish there were a magic pill we could put in the water for everyone to just love one another. Who knows, maybe as more of us try to spread love and compassion it will really start to catch on.
    good post!

      Hi Barbara,
From your mouth to God’s ears. We need to show more sensitivity to each other; even as bloggers some of the hateful words and things I read sometimes give me pause. Is all this necessary? What are we trying to prove with the all the meanness? Thank you! 🙂

There is a lot of hurt in our world caused by thoughtlessness.
The incident at Rutgers University is very sad and indicts us all in some way.
The internet is not offering the cover that some think allows them to do evil.
    We all need more sensitivity.

      Bree,
We definitely need to stop believing the cloak of anonymity will protect us from facing the consequences wrought by our hurling evil at each other. When we operate from a place of fear of God, we treat others with decency; when we dont, we become monsters.
      Thanks for your insights. 🙂

Visiting from the “Hare” group of SITS to let you know I was here! Is this the current post? The pictures are beautiful and express themselves without words! I like what you said, “It would be wonderful if we could all learn to say less, do more for each other and be more compassionate.” I so agree.

      Hi Nan,
Thanks for your visit… I enjoyed mine to yours and I’m glad we can use the Hare team to rally support for each others blogs. Lately, I find that words are used over and over again to add confusion to painful situations. I say enough; Let’s look at the facts and speak the truth. 🙂

Stopping in from SITS and so glad I did! This was just what I needed to read today.

I needed a wake up call. Although any recommendations for what we do when people lack compassion? I’m guessing you’ll say, just show them all the more!

You have such gorgeous photography on your blog. It’s a treat to come here and visit. Positive Kismet is such a great name and very much in line with my beliefs as well.

Stopping by from your SITS Hare group
