Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance

I watched the Video Music Awards with my teens tonight and was quite impressed by the way Lady Gaga handled the event… Chelsea Handler (you gotta love her) did a great hosting job and kept things moving in a fresh and fun way, while Lady Gaga added her special brand of the fantastically entertaining. Of course, the icing on the cake was the fact that she walked away with eight awards including the coveted Moonman for Video of the Year for “Bad Romance.” Eminen won a few well deserved awards and Justin Bieber won for Best New Artist… Is he still considered new?

As for Lady Gaga, that eccentric, creative, stormy lady has come a long way since her salad days in NY, performing at rock concerts in Manhattan’s Lower Eastside; sometimes with performance artist Lady Starlight. I admire her gumption because, at least, she’s pushing the envelope at full tilt and damn the consequences. Add to it that she is talented and wears the most out-there clothes, excluding meat dresses, with a certain daring and NY swagger; I, for one, definitely like the lady and her music.

Storm King: Circling the sculptures part 2

For some reason and please don’t even ask, as I watched her prance around on stage, I imagined her needing far more space than the confines of the event location could withstand… Where else, in the beautiful state of New York, can this outrageous creative creature spread her wings and still be relevant? Where would her sculptural, over the top outfits blend into the landscape and still be aesthetically beautiful?

As I thought about it, another show I watched today popped into my mind and, Voila! I could see the lady at the mountain… namely the beautifully landscaped, with enormous, sculptural art open air museum in Mountainville, NY – Storm King Art Center. Have you ever been to Storm King Art Center?

Known fondly and locally as Storm King, this remarkable 500 acres of undulating hills and beautifully positioned giant large-scale sculptures is home to some of the best outdoor artistic installations by both modern masters like Alexander Calder (the Arch), Henry Moore (Reclining Figure), Richard Serra (Schunnemunk Fork),, and Louise Nevelson (City on the High Mountain), and by contemporary sculptors such as Andy Goldsworthy (Storm King Wall), Alice Aycock (Three-Fold Manifestation II), Alexander Liberman (Adam), and Roy Lichtenstein (Mermaid); including the most recent addition of Maya Lin’s installation – “Storm King Wavefield.”

It’s a wonderful get away for a day filled with nature and art; beautiful, monumental art displayed in nature… Take a trip out there and perhaps, it will all make sense. You know, the Lady Gaga connection. Perhaps she could give an open air, outdoor performance with her magnificent wardrobe as installations. Enjoy!
