Positive Attitude: What’s With All the Positive Shtick?

18/07/2010

“Everything can be taken from a man but … the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” Viktor E. Frankl [Man’s Search for Meaning]

Positive Attitude: What we believe we become…

OUR QUESTIONS
On reading the title of this post, one might ask: Does this have anything to do with destiny? the economy? dinner? Jokes aside, maintaining a positive attitude, especially in difficult times, is  imperative but not always easy to do. I have another blog on the blogger platform, Positive Kismet, where I write mostly on positive, motivational pieces that encourage us to explore the power of a positive attitude. Recently, a dear friend visited my blogger blog and came back to me with the classic NY line, “What’s with the positive shtick?” It was an honest comment, said in a comical way, and we laughed. I admit, it’s a subject that can polarize people; people react with a comforting or cynical smile.

Yes, I know … All of us have these thoughts and sometimes, we doubt the power of a positive mental attitude, so let’s address them.
As humans, do we have negative and positive thoughts?
Do we have a choice which way our thoughts/actions go?
Do our thoughts influence our actions/attitude?
Does it take great courage and effort to focus on developing a positive attitude?
If we could focus on a preferred way of thinking and acting, which would we choose?

If my title caught your attention, I’d love you to pause for a moment and reflect on what about it made you stop. What were you expecting to read? I’m tempted to give you a hint but that would defeat the purpose so reflect on it and share your thoughts below.

Positive Attitude: My cup runneth over…

AN ANECDOTE
At different points in my life, I commuted into the city for work; the magnificent Grand Central station was my final stop. In my earlier commuting years, there was a vibrant energy in the air as people rushed off the trains to make deals and accomplish dreams. The crowds, like soldier ants, marched along purposefully, determined to complete the tasks ahead. Post 9/11, the energy shifted and a heavy sadness blanketed everything.

There was still a sense of purpose in the air but it was muted. We mourned. Everyone mourned. Over time and with great courage, the families/survivors of the deceased moved tentatively forward; slowly rebuilding shattered lives. We all needed courage and a positive attitude to believe that we will overcome evil and America will be stronger and better for it.

As our collective memories faded, it was back to business as usual at the train station as the real estate boom built stratospheric fortunes for many. Then the boom busted. After the initial shock, and as the first wave of foreclosures hit the marketplace, a new mood set in … at the station. A subtle yet palpable tension can be felt at Grand Central station. The crowds are tentative; somewhat discombobulated. There is a listlessness; a certain distance and disconnectedness in the air.

Sure, there are plenty of people drinking and eating at the bars at the station, but I would hesitate to call all of them celebratory; clearly some are. In challenging times like now, a positive attitude is like a much needed hug; a way to remind ourselves that everything will change for the better. Unequivocally! We will prevail. We will be okay. I believe our kismet (our fate/destiny) is influenced by our attitude and we need to maintain a healthy mental view of our lives. If you are job searching, don’t despair. Here’s a list of top 10 companies hiring again. Go for it!

Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same.” Francesca Reigler

OUR CHALLENGE
The point is that some of us associate positive anything with the airy fairy, la-di-da, delude-yourself-about- life-set. Having a positive perspective is about courageous, logical, common sense actions that can uplift us and others around us – we are powerful beings in a challenged yet beautiful world. What are the implications of living with a positive attitude? Imagine if Edison, halfway through his 100th try, believed that we were destined to spend the rest of our lives living by candles and oil lamps instead of the bright lights we enjoy in our homes today? Darkness doesn’t have to be a permanent state or condition.

“Whenever you’re in conflict with someone, there is one factor that can make the difference between damaging your relationship and deepening it. That factor is attitude.” William James

Positive Attitude: Your thoughts have power – Protect them with good messages.♥

OUR ATTITUDE
Life is filled with blessings and burdens and the difference between those who thrive and those who don’t speaks volumes about our attitude; a positive attitude is critical to how we respond to events in our lives.
A positive attitude doesn’t mean ignoring our responsibilities, pretending that our struggles no longer exist, never having a bad hair day or running off to some undefined nirvana; it’s really about how we choose to respond to situations that we experience in our daily lives.

The last couple of years have been very difficult for many families. People lost jobs, homes, health insurance, businesses and loved ones. The bigger challenge for many has been finding the strength within, God’s grace, and the can-do attitude to pull back from the brink.

“The only way to reach the mountain peaks of life is to forget about self and help other people reach greater heights.” Zig Ziglar

Positive Attitude: Think. Love. Be…

OUR STRENGTH
Through all the hardships there have been remarkable comebacks, redemptions, successes as many have found a new path, a new way of living and a simplifying of lifestyles. I’m sure we could all think of someone we know who fits the bill. Identify them here so we can applaud their courageous spirit. I have a list and will add them at the end.

A universal healing is in order as there are still so many people hurting in the world. We can be part of that healing process by our positive attitude of goodwill, gratitude, graceful action and awareness of our own kismet. We MUST REMEMBER that goodness reverberates.

Do I have all the answers? No. When the mental chatter dies down and we are alone with our thoughts, where do we park them? Where do you stand on the subject of having a positive attitude? What role does it play/has it played in your life? Do you know someone who has shifted their baggage and transformed their life? What are your thoughts? I would love to hear from you. As always, your comments are appreciated. Thank You!

A quote comes to mind, which I’ll paraphrase..’The greatest disability is not physical..it’s a mindset. To give up, to stop trying..’ John Vujcic (Life without Limbs). John was born without arms or legs ( a rare medical disorder, which name I forget) but with a brilliant mind and an even more brilliant attitude.. He has subsequently gone on to achieve far more than many full-bodied individuals dare to dream of..I salute his courage and that of everyone else who picks themselves up and keeps moving in the direction of their dreams! Difficult sometimes, yes..but what’s the alternative? May we all choose positivity when choice comes calling.

Great choice and thanks again for sharing your views here Goz!

Gratitude is an important part of keeping positive. I truly believe that if you are grateful for what you already have, it will bring more blessings to your life, and in turn will create a more positive attitude about life in general.

About the title of this post, Positive attitude, I can tell you I relate to that big time, because for a while now I try to live only in the positive emotions and avoid negative emotions and stay away from negativity as much as I can.
I feel compelled to tell people about this blog and I hope they visit and enjoy this blog too.

Attitude is everything. The way you look at things has a profound meaning to your existence. I like your post it has many enlightening words. Things are not easy when going through a crisis but we are all different on how we see and handle things. It all comes from within so it is very important we are always aware of our attitude.

An inspiring post Elizabeth, 8) I’m a big believer in PMA.

I’m lucky, I was born with a positive attitude, which I got from my Mother. However I also spent 3 years in the Insurance Industry and had regular PMA motivational talks, and surprisingly they did help. 🙂

Good luck with the 100 comment challenge Elizabeth.

Best wishes to you too John! Good for you to have PMA as part of your make-up.
It is a special quality and it doesn’t surprise me that you continue to feed your mind good thoughts.
See you on your blog soon 🙂

  12. 10/08/2010 3:22 am

Hi Elizabeth, I’m a firm believer in PMA. Since suffering a spinal injury I’ve had to overcome many obstacles, if i didn’t have a PMA i’d have fell over years ago.

I know what and who i am, my strengths & weaknesses and i have a firm grip on reality with the focus to improve myself and my family’s situation.

Only I can make my dreams come true!

It’s all to easy to get to the difficult stages of any challenge in life and give up, but always remember “If man could’ve got off the ship in a storm he’d never have crossed the ocean”.

Great post Elizabeth, i hope that you enjoy the 100 blog comment challenge. I’ll be adding you to the twitter list as well.

  13. 10/08/2010 9:19 am

    Elizabeth,
There’s definitely a lot to think about here, SITStah. To me, we have to have a positive attitude or at least, a survivor’s attitude to maintain hope and keep moving forward. Even with the simplest, straight-forward goal setting like – losing weight – for example, requires us to push against over-whelming disagreement from ourselves and well-meaning friends, family and co-workers with their “just one won’t hurt” comments. It’s never just one, but we have to keep going and start over each time…and stay positive.

    • 11/08/2010 11:23 pm

I agree. A survivor’s attitude is in great need now. Add a PMA and one can handle the current stresses with less fear.
      Thanks for your feedback!

    Hi Elizabeth,

It must have been an incredibly traumatic time in NY, post 9/11.
I live in the UK. I can remember watching the event unfold on the news channels. I stood there open mouthed, not believing what I was seeing.
It showed through after 9/11 the true grit and courage of New Yorkers. NY became a small community after the event. People that would not normally associate with some people found themselves becoming friends. All from one event.
The challenge came after. Rebuilding lives, and dreams.

    Hi Elizabeth,

Really Love This Inspirational Post You Wrote Here!

I was very very young (23year old, I believe) when I 1st know the idea of PMA. During that time, my experience in life was not as deep as I am now, if you know what I mean. Life isn’t as tough as now. So I guess my understanding of PMA is like what you wrote “airy fairy, la-di-da, delude-yourself-about- life-set.” during that time.

As the years goes by, I was faced with a fair share of challenges and struggles in life. Even with a rather shallow understanding of PMA, it do helps me achieve a few good success in life. I used to use PMA to lead a telemarketing department of 100 staffs.Yet my biggest struggles with PMA arrive none other when my Mom went through 2 separate amputation surgery, losing her right leg on 2005, and left on 2006. I am very closed and connected to my Mom. We ahred the same dreams often, do you believe that? My heart was broken into a million pieces to see her suffered the pain and cried like a baby at 60 years of age.

No amount of prayers and PMA talk helped to overcome her pain. To me, it is the darkest years of my life because I really really love my mum very much.

But something happened during her second amputation surgery. Somehing that may seems nothing to others, but to me, is one of those very significant event of my life. I will NEVER FORGET that day when I visit her when she just woke up from the operation. There she was, with half of her body left because both of her operations was above knee amputation, I could have cried, but didn’t. Why because she talked with a light in her eyes, telling me how she had see it way through about her life and suffering. She said she is thankful that she is still alive and are planning to contribute to do any kind of welfare and charity works in ways that she can.She showed so much bravery and courage on her second amputation surgery. She become way stronger and positive.

That “fire”, that “light of love” in her eyes touched and healed my heart.

Is not positive mental quotes, it not just words or speeches, talks or writing, is Positive Mental Attitude.

Just some thoughts after I read your post here.

    Thanks again

    Jason Ser

    Hi Elizabeth

Great post and one I can definitely relate to, having spent 3 years wandering the wilderness of internet marketing and only this year started to turn things around, I say that for 3 years I successfully avoided success for 3 years and I was good at it!

If your life is not how you would like it, then you can dwell on the bad and lose your inner glow, as someone who has always struggled with my finances I has this choice to make.

I took this attitude, I maybe poor but I am happy, there is always something to smile about. If I was poor and miserable, what a wretched existence that would be.

    Hi Elizabeth…
Thank you for such wise, sage advice.
Positive to me means realizing that there are always two sides to every coin, two sides to all relationships…and, two sides to the way we perceive every action.

Staying positive…no matter what comes our way…takes courage and commitment. But, if you work on it long enough it starts to get easier and easier to see the positive side of things because you have now made it a habit to see things positive.

Developing this positive attitude…being thankful for all things that come into our lives is the single most effective exercise we can do on a daily basis to achieve peace in our lives.

There truly is a reason for everything…if we but have eyes to see it 😉

This a life project and I find that the more I practice it, the more I become it…

    Hi, Elizabeth,
The thoughts we think create the world we live in. Darren L Carter, http://darrenlcarter.com/blog/building-business/overcome-build-achieve.html has a beautiful blog and book about a Japanese survivor of the Hiroshima bomb. It all fits in with a positive attitude. There was also a program on TV about the Hiroshima bomb, the horrific devastation and loss of life. The survivors were interviewed. Great program.
Positive attitude is more than half the battle won.

    • 21/08/2010 5:57 am

      Hi Fran,
Thanks for your comment and identifying Darren’s new book here.
Hiroshima remains one of biggest tragedies and we must never forget its lessons…
Over the years, many survivors have shared their stories in the media.
They all speak about what they continue to do to move forward positively in their lives.
All are quite powerful. Thank you!

  23. 20/08/2010 6:08 pm

    Hi Elizabeth,

Blimey what a well thought out post,

Positive mental attitude is something I believe in. The stronger ones in this world should help the weaker ones. There are so many awful things that go on in our lives but with the right attitude we can get through them.

You always hear stories and news bulletins about bad things, we need to hear more good and positive things in the world.

I have met many people, friends and family who talk about there lives being so negative. STOP!! If you are negative you will be if you are positive you will be. Help the negative people to become more posative.

    Thanks

    Craig

    • 21/08/2010 5:31 am

Craig, Thank you for your feedback!
I agree with your point and that is one reason, I prefer to write about the positive.
Sure, we alll expereince some negativity and sometimes respond in like manner.
However, I write on pma because the more I do it, the more I internalize that message.
      Thank you 🙂

Hello Elizabeth, it’s very nice to meet you and enjoy your fine thoughts. Isn’t it odd that when we’re young our emotional thoughts or self was only under the control of those around us and not by ourselves. And when we mature, if we mature, we find the need to address the emotional self in some way that would rewire the old circuits, break the mold, and enhance or improve our lives as a result. I have no idea what I’m talking about but does it sound good?

The opposite of a positive attitude is stinkin’ thinkin’ and I know what that’s worth, absolutely nothing and serves no one but the doom sayers. I hate those guys. LOL 😉 Take care and be well, Steve D.

    Hi Elizabeth,

I found my first visit to your blog very uplifting and inspiring.

To have a positive mental attitude to life is something which has helped me deal with the sudden loss of my daughter (Lucy Elizabeth) aged 14, in 2007.

She had many health issues throughout her life and needed care 24/7. Again our PMA got us through this and continues to do so today.

Thank you for highlighting the importance of this Elizabeth, I look forward to returning for more of your wisdom.

Good luck with the 100 comment challenge.

    Kindest,

    Brian

    Hi Elizabeth,

Thanks for sharing this and giving your wonderful advices. Unfortunately there are times that I don’t feel enough positive if something goes wrong. It can be either important or unimportant but It affects me. Your blog post gave me an extra encouragement for being more positive in my life. Thank you!

Wish you all the best with the “100 blog posts challenge”.

    Take care,
    Andreas

    Hi Elizabeth
Wise words but not always easy to put into practice of course.
When you catch yourself being really negative, just correct it in the best way you can.
And don’t beat yourself up over it 🙂
Yesterday has gone, tomorrow is not here yet-live in the here and now and enjoy it.
    Best wishes

    Hi Elizabeth
Tapping on Zig’s comment, would you say the difference between negative and positive is the difference between inward and outward? If we direct things inward they become negative, and when we give things outward they become positive? Maybe a little bit like the cholerics who display either leadership or anger. Leadership/outward and anger/inward.
    Thanks
    Alex

    Hi Elizabeth

Very nice and soothing post. Yes, positive attitude plays is key in an individuals life … I liked the quote that says

“Whenever you’re in conflict with someone, there is one factor that can make the difference between damaging your relationship and deepening it. That factor is attitude” ~ William James. It is sooo true, it only in these time where we really get to know what the other person is like or how we react then!

Depending on attitude, you move towards your success or failure.

Lovely post and nice to meet you.

Wish you good luck for the 100 blog comment challenge.

    Cheers!

    Hi Elizabeth,

Thank you for a very thought provoking post.

You’ve triggered a thought in me. Is it easier to feel good about ourselves, when we’re feeling good about other people? When we’re just in our own head, it can be so lonely can’t it?

    Hi Elizabeth,

What a beautiful article! Perfect timing. I have been blog hopping in my sleep and that article was a real breath of fresh air.

I am a big believe in realistic positive attitude and the laws of karma “what we put out comes back” etc.

In regarding to realistic positive attitude, I do mean that we can all have good days and bad days and to know that sometimes we have those down days for a reason, whether it be to teach us a lesson or slow us down, who knows. In saying that if we have an overall positive outlook in life then it is inevitable that we surround ourselves with positive energy and positive people overall! 😀

I hope everything has been going well for you with the challenge. I am doing a tally as I go around checking on how people are going.

Hope all is going well. Keep up the commetning!

    Cheers

    Jacinta 😀

I like the “Think Positive” poster. I have a lot of time for people who take the time to work out how they “work” – internally I mean. Once we have a good idea of that we can so powerfully change ourselves and influence those around us. Stay well. Michael.

This is a great post Elizabeth! I’m really inspired and not only that you’ve covered the human condition to stand back up and take what is rightfully ours, life. Thus, positivity is something not a lot of us think about but do naturally. When we write about it, it’s almost like a spell has taken over and a salesy type of language pops up. Unaware at times, I’ve learned to see that it’s us really trying to communicate our inner spirit. Thank you for sharing your wonderful thoughts with us on positivity.

See you on the 100th comments!

    Hi Elizabeth,

What a fantastic and inspirational post. Let me tell you about motivation. I was very motivated to finish this 100 comment challenge and I did it in 2.5 days! YOU are the last blog on my list, my final stop. But your post has me motivated to do more! Just thinking of the people I’m helping by reading their posts and commenting positively on their sites – and being supportive of the goal of the challenge is such a great feeling!

Thanks for letting me end this challenge on a POSITIVE note 🙂

Thanks for this beautiful post. It is good to be reminded to keep the positive attitude. Everything is really dependant on our own psych. Outside circumstances can present obstacles, but with the right attitude we can overcome.

    Hi Elizabeth
Life is to short to be constantly worried or confused or hateful. It is your life and you are the one who controls it so you have to do everything you can to be the best you can be and if there are others who need help do all you possibly can to enable them to create their own success.

    regards

    Hi Elizabeth

You have a really individual blog here and I enjoyed reading your ‘About Me’ section.

As regards your post on PMA, I have always been an optimist, thinking everything will turn out right in the end, so I suppose I do have a PMA. Do I qualify?

    Thanks for visiting my post.
This is a very inspiring and beautiful blog – I like it.

Having traveled and lived in quite a few countries around the world I think I can subscribe to your love of diversity and other peoples.
PMA? Yes, best done by avoiding the negativity around you – especially when starting out with internet marketing! 🙂
    Keep up the good work

    Hi Elizabeth,
The reading of the moods at Grand Central Station shows that you have an amazing emotional antenna. That is so interesting to me that I felt like flying up there to test it out until I realized it is not the location, it is the ability to tune it wherever you are.
That is a wonderful gift and this is a terrific post.
    Regards and thank you.

    Brian.
