When I started my one-on-one interview series in the fall of 2009, I imagined I would connect with some fantastic people and use it as an opportunity to showcase the accomplishments of people from all walks of life. I remain grateful and amazed at the serendipitous way I find just the right person at the right time. Each interviewee has offered me, and hopefully you dear reader, a vignette, a tasty morsel about life and the many things that enrich us. This year, I plan to add even more voices as my goal remains to delve into my social media connections and share stories and insights from the phenomenal people I meet, thereby putting a real face to the brilliant person behind the web page, blog image or twitter post we see.
Today, we meet the multi-tasking, effervescent, affable, accomplished business woman and “mompreneur” – Emma Tiebens. Emma is a wife, mom and gifted motivational business coach and mentor; she belongs to that special breed of people who enfold you in their love and trust on the first meeting. She is a supermom and challenges her clients to be their best. I met Emma on Twitter and we made an immediate and great connection. Emma is also an author and is currently working on her 2nd book which she will be co-authoring with the incomparable, social media maven, Mari Smith. Sit back and enjoy Emma’s interview and do stop back to share your views and success stories with us.

Foundation Questions:

Tell us a bit on your background: Who are you? Where did you grow up and where do you live now?
My name is Emma Tiebens – Author, Speaker, Mentor, Coach, Loving Wife, Super Cool Mom and Child of The Most High God! I grew up in a small city called Marikina City in the Philippines. In 1989, I moved to the United States with lofty dreams and an optimistic promise of a better future for myself and my family.
During my 19 years in the US, I have been a Banker, an International Flight Attendant (United Airlines), a student of Certified Financial Planning and a Jewelry Designer/Business Owner. I completed a Certified Financial Planning program at the University of California, Irvine as well as an Associate Jewelry Professional Certificate from the Gemological Institute of America.
I met my “Rock of Gibraltar” my husband, Gary Tiebens, in 1995 and after trying for years, God blessed us with our “miracle child” Garrett. In 2002, I took a shot at becoming an entrepreneur, invested over $100,000 into Bella Gemma Jewelry and while it became a successful brand among brides in Orange County, CA, my life was in a tailspin. I started to not have time or freedom and neglected the very reason I wanted to be successful – my family!
A good friend introduced me to a network marketing opportunity in 2006 and even though I have always felt that those types of businesses have no future, something told me that this is where I will find true success. Fast forward 2 1/2 years later; our personal organization had grown to over 6,000 people. In January 2009, God opened another door when I founded The Relational Marketer. More than ever, I am passionate about mentoring those who have a big vision on why this model – relational marketing – works.

What do you do for a living?
I am The Relational Marketer. I enable entrepreneurs to attract, nurture and retain powerful business relationships online and offline through Relational Marketing. I am passionate about teaching entrepreneurs how to use technology to build and foster relationships with people they wouldn’t have been able to reach. As a result of that relationship, potential customers feel confident about investing in what the entrepreneurs offer – a product, service or system. The entrepreneurs become understood, appreciated, admired and effortlessly create a following. I am also the author of the book, Attracting Customers For Life, as well as a Speaker, Business Consultant, Coach and Mentor.

Why did you choose the path you now follow?
I have chosen this path because I believe that my life is meant to stand for something. I am passionate about encouraging, enlightening and empowering entrepreneurs because I believe that their lives also count for something. Collectively, our successes will make a difference in people’s lives and make an impact in the world.
I believe in being unbelievably blessed so I can continue to become a blessing to everyone I meet. I love seeing a person or a business step into their fullest potential under my mentorship. It gives me great joy to see that the strategies I teach do work!

“Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one’s thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world.” Goethe

When did you decide to make key changes in your life?
I was 25 years old when the opportunity to go to the United States fell on my lap. I was working for the movie industry in the Philippines at that time and was earning a pretty decent pay. However, I wanted more from life and remember thinking that if I was going to create a better life; it was likely to happen in the US than in Manila. So I plowed right through the fear and focused on my goal. No matter how difficult my first 5 years in the US were, my faith remained strong and my purpose clear; this clarity enabled me to move forward and never look back.

Share your world view: How do you live your life and manage your household?
Oh, great question! It’s my favorite question to answer especially being a “Mompreneur.” The Trinity – God, Christ and the Holy Spirit is the center of our family. My family is my pride and joy; Gary, Garrett and I live a life of constant gratitude and praise. Our 8-year old “miracle son” Garrett was our 4th pregnancy but our 1st baby. If you ask him what he thinks of Mom and Dad, he’ll say “They mean the world to me!” We are a very close-knit family and we love traveling, discovering new things, laughing and loving. No achievement will ever compare to the love we share in my family and how we support and encourage each other.
A typical day in the Tiebens Household starts with getting Garrett ready for school. After Garrett’s dropped off, my highly focused “work clock” starts ticking. My most productive and focused hours in the day are from 9am-2pm when I attend to business and clients. From 3pm onwards, my attention shifts to school pick up, homework, dinner, then bedtime reading. I rarely watch TV – unless my husband and son are watching Man vs Wild or The Food Channel and they ask me to join in and “snuggle up” with them.
Using technology plays an important part in how I conduct and manage my business and I can’t live without my gadgets – my 15-inch MacBook Pro, my Samson Go-Mic, iPhone, Canon SD1200 digital camera and my mini-tripods. I love using Skype for my Coaching and Consulting sessions with clients from the USA, Germany and Canada. I also love creating systems and video tutorials that teach internet marketers key skills on how to use technology to reach their target audience.
I look forward to my “social media” time when I sit for about 30 minutes to an hour (depending on how many replies I need to make) connecting with relationships I continue to build online.
I enjoy attending live networking events and seminars where I get to actually meet my online friends in person. These events are always fun and remind me of the power of transforming social connections into business opportunities. It’s always a ton of fun.
I am an avid reader and the library in our home is very special to me. Speaking of libraries, I am a supporter of our HB Central Library and that’s where I’ve been going lately for more focused work and inspiration. A love for books is something I want our son and all children around the world to have.

Reflective Questions:

What motivates you to get out of bed?
My passion to make a difference… motivates me. Knowing that something I say or post on my blog, on Twitter or on Facebook could very well encourage someone who’s disheartened or possibly on the verge of giving up, keeps me going. My passion is to live a life of purpose, to help others find theirs and to help bring back HOPE to the hopeless. I want to live a life reflecting God’s love and to become unbelievably blessed so I can continue to be a blessing to others.

What makes you happy/laugh?
Seeing my husband and son interacting; horsing around and sharing loving moments with my family makes me happy. It makes me happy to hear about the successes and achievements of people I mentor and coach as well as receiving comments or posts on my Blog, Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube page on how my words have inspired and given others encouragement. Being able to write a sizable check to a charitable cause that is dear to me gives me great joy. Spending time on a cruise ship, singing and dancing on the LIdo deck with my family and friends makes me laugh and my heart sing. In my son’s words, family fun time “makes my heart smile.”

What makes you sad/mad?
Not a lot of things really make me mad … but, I dislike negative people who constantly complain about how miserable their lives are but choose not to do anything about it. I despise gossip or talking badly about another person. I dislike judging people from their outward appearance for I believe that even if “Man looks at the outward appearance, God looks at the heart.” It makes me sad when there is miscommunication and misinterpretation with people I care about. It makes me even sadder to see people suffer especially children and the elderly.

“Everything you want is out there waiting for you to ask. Everything you want also wants you. But you have to take action to get it.” Jules Renard

Laptop Love: There is Power in the Collective...

What would you do differently with your life if you had the power?
If I had the power, we would be financially free – all our debts will be completely paid off and our investments will be perfectly allocated. We would have a few thousand rental units with positive cash flow and have a charitable trust in place for our son so he has the opportunity to continue building the legacy and the dynasty we would leave behind. We would be living comfortably and in luxury with 50% of our income because the other 50% would go towards God’s causes, charities, and investments.

What would you do with the world if you had the choice? With the world? I would set up libraries in most major cities especially in Third World Countries. I would shout to the world that “God’s plans are to prosper you and not harm you…” He plans to give you HOPE and a great future.

What guiding principle(s) do you follow to make your life meaningful?
I love the quote that is written on President Ronald Reagan’s epitaph – this is one of my guiding principles: “I know in my heart that man is good. That what is right will always eventually triumph. And there’s purpose and worth to each and every life.” Respect for others is key for me, as well as suspending judgment and criticism of others.
For my family, The Bible is one of the greatest books that we constantly learn from; especially the Books of Isaiah, Jeremiah and James. I enjoy reading great books and listening to educational CDs. My car is a University of Knowledge because I listen to informative, inspirational CDs when I drive. I believe that time is a precious commodity we never get back so we must make every minute count.
I believe that life begins once we realize that all of us have gifts that we can share with each other to make the world a better place. Sometimes, our gifts are tied to our passion, which turns into our vision, which in turn becomes our life’s mission. Individually, we might not be able to make a big difference in the world, but if we can help one person, we might make an impact on changing their worldview for the better. My goal is to support others in pursuit of bringing out their gift to the world; to motivate and empower people to achieve their goals.

What word(s) of advice would you give to others today?
I would like to see people discover and truly understand their gifts and how they could best share them to help make someone’s life better. I love this daily “self-check” question: “Whose life is better now because of yours?” I heard a famous author say “Do you leave people better than you found them?” I believe that if we just become more sensitive to the needs of others and exercise the Golden Rule, we’ll have a society that is more tolerant, supportive, less judgmental and more loving.

“The path to success is to take massive, determined action.” Anthony Robbins
“Don’t wait. The time will never be just right.” Napoleon Hill

A Sunset: Take Action ~ Reach for the Sun, Moon, Stars...

How would you like to be remembered?
I would like to be remembered as someone who has created a legacy of Love, Inspiration and Empowerment globally. My dream is to see and hear of success stories from people I have mentored – or people who have simply read and implemented my books and my systems or have heard me speak at an event -and hear them share how my presence in their lives has made a difference in their ability to help others succeed.
I would like to be remembered by our son as the “Best Mother in the World” and that he teaches his children all the priceless lessons he learned from me and his Dad. I would love for my husband to remember me as his one and only love in this lifetime and beyond…
I would like to be remembered for helping turn lives around in distressed areas – especially in my homeland, the Philippines – through my charitable giving to causes in obedience to God’s most important Commandment: “Love God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul and love your neighbor as yourself.”

Happiness is …?
… Spending wonderful moments with my husband, Gary, and our son, Garrett; traveling, exploring, learning, and relaxing. They are the most precious gifts God has given me.
… Encouraging, enlightening and empowering entrepreneurs – hearing their success stories!
… Living life with passion and purpose and helping others do the same!
… Eating Coffee Lovers Dream from Coldstone Ice Cream
… Dancing and singing on the LIdo Deck on the cruise ship
… Enjoying a Thalassotherapy whirlpool and thermal suite at Cloud 9 Spa
… Receiving a nice French manicure/pedicure with rhinestone flower design complete with paraffin treatment. Nice.

Emma seems like a highly energetic and motivated business woman and I admire her efforts.I wonder if she evr finds time to do something relaxing by herself – alone time?
    Another great interview. Thank you.

Hi Bree! Thanks so much for stopping by and for leaving your comment… thanks for your kind words! Much appreciated! You are so astute… great question! Yes, most people wonder if I ever find time to do something relaxing by myself. The truth is, I DO! However, it’s not as consistent as I would like to have it. I do start my morning with a few minutes of prayer and meditation and during the day, I find time to have my own “mini-spa” while reading a chapter or two of my “book of the day”. What I would absolutely love to start incorporating – AGAIN – is my Turbo Jam workout in the mornings! So, your comment reminded me to focus on that again and so, I am challenging myself to get back in that mode starting tomorrow! I have YOU to thank for reminding me and I will be sure to come back here for an “accountability” check next week! Thanks again for your comment!!!

This is really great and Emma sounds like the type of coach any business person would want on their side. A woman of Action – I really like that description. Did she really not speak English when she came to the USA or was Joel Bauer joking?
    Good job Elizabeth and Emma!

    • 23/02/2010 10:28 am

Hi Cassie! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment… your comment made me smile! Joel’s statement is partly true. When I came to the US as a very young lady, I understood English and spoke enough to get by but I was TERRIFIED of meeting new people because most people would yell at me when they couldn’t understand my accent… it’s as if by doing so, I will understand them better. I had a serious inferiority complex with language that I made a decision early on that I will do whatever it takes to “tweak my tongue” and remove as much accent as I possibly could. 20 years later, I still speak Tagalog (Philippines) fluently but I no longer and afraid that people will yell at me because they can’t understand me… I am proud that I speak 2 1/4 languages 😉 The other one is a teeny bit of Spanish. Joel was actually shocked to hear that only 20 years ago, I barely opened my mouth and now, I am speaking to groups and to webinars! If there’s a will there’s a way, right? Thanks again for your kind words, Cassie!
