Weekly Photo Challenge: Launch…

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this.” Henry David Thoreau

Weekly Photo Challenge: Launch... A launch of mega-lights at Watch The Throne Show...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Launch... a pyrotechnic launch...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Launch... launching a light show...

My selections for this week’s photo challenge might be a bit of/launch of a stretch, but if I’m taking a dictionary interpretation to heart, I’m on point in showcasing the phenomenal launch of a light show we enjoyed at Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s Watch The Throne concert… I haven’t written about it yet or uploaded my pictures because I’ve spent the last month trying to find a diplomatic way to talk about the annoying stuff; weed-smoking, jive-talking, booze drinking, cigarette smoke in your face experience that dented what was a fantastic show by two of rap music‘s geniuses… No, the annoying stuff was not from the super talented Jay-Z and Kanye, but by some of their VIP friends/guests, even some familiar faces that I won’t be naming. Sorry… All this while security stood around and acted dumb and blind. But more on that shit stuff later or on another day! For now, come back for more launch shots later! ;-)

Launch: to throw forward: hurl b: to release, catapult, or send off (a self-propelled object) a: to set (a boat or ship) afloat b : to give (a person) a start c (1) : to put into operation or set in motion : initiate, introduce (2) : to get off to a good start d : to load into a computer’s memory and run Merriam Webster Dictionary

Weekly Photo Challenge: Launch... Now this fire launch was impressive!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Launch... Kanye framed by smoke and clouds...

Weekly Photo Challenge: Launch... More lights launched

Anyway, I don’t want to launch into a tirade over an event that was meant to be entertaining, however, that part was exasperating nonetheless. As you can see from the photos, it was an amazing show but… As my family and some of my friends said to me, what did you expect, chocolate kisses and orange juice? They had a point there but at a concert it is not so easy to move. Next time, I’ll cast my net where the water is deep; I’ll get a different set of tickets and sit elsewhere. Enough about that and time to launch into a new song. I’ll still do a write up and share my concert photos sometime this year… More on LAUNCH below! ;-)

Weekly Photo Challenge: Another Look At Winter…

To Winter  – Claude McKay
Stay, season of calm love and soulful snows!
There is a subtle sweetness in the sun,
The ripples on the stream’s breast gaily run,
The wind more boisterously by me blows,
And each succeeding day now longer grows.
The birds a gladder music have begun,
The squirrel, full of mischief and of fun, Contd…

Aside from the nasty snowstorm we had in late October, we’ve had a relatively mild winter in NY. I was out and about yesterday; on the aqueduct and in NYC, Manhattan specifically, and I’ll share some photos from my jaunt. It occurred to me, as I walked about, that winter is as varied as spring in that you never know what you might see. I enjoyed the many lights in the City which brightened the night and had me thinking about what the trees would say if they could speak… I loved the colorful berries that popped out of the bushes; bright red, waiting for birds or other little animals to stop by for a treat. Oh yeah, I even took one of those colorful shuttles across to Grand Central Station,  took a picture of the interior, and then walked back to Rockefeller Center to take one last glimpse at the Christmas tree below. ;-)

“O Wind, if Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?” Percy Bysshe Shelley

…From maples’ topmost branch the brown twig throws.
I read these pregnant signs, know what they mean:
I know that thou art making ready to go.
Oh stay! I fled a land where fields are green
Always, and palms wave gently to and fro,
And winds are balmy, blue brooks ever sheen,
To ease my heart of its impassioned woe.

As I trudged around both in nature and in the city, my eyes were drawn to colors and interesting sights. The huge terrarium plants you see above, were inside a building with lights glowing… They look like they are enclosed in water… or perhaps the hose is for circulation. The bright city lights, and the grand, colorfully lit tree added a festive mood to the city. The reddish limbs of a long expired and hibernating shrub on the aqueduct caught my eye too; all twirly shrubbery and color…

“Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.” Stanley Horowitz

As I walked about the city, I bumped into a young couple at Rockefeller Center. They were inebriated but in a jolly mood. They were trying to take a picture on a timer but it wasn’t working well for obvious reasons. I offered to take a shot of them together. They obliged and then offered to do same for me. Initially, I declined but then relented. They were quite harmless out-of-towners.  The young man  took my camera joyfully and then dropped it. Yep,  at that moment, I wondered about the wisdom of my decision, but he picked it up and took a nice shot of me and one of what you see. We bid each other a Happy New Year and moved on. No, they didn’t get a cart ride… That’s NYC for you. We can be friendly.  As for the bloom, I think it is remarkable to come across blooms in winter time… but this is understandable as we’ve had a month of warm days and even though yesterday was biting cold, the sun shines brightly and early afternoons are quite warm

Grant me the ability to be alone,
May it be my custom to go outdoors each day
among the trees and grasses
among all growing things
and there may I be alone,
and enter into prayer
to talk with the one
that I belong to.
Rabbi Nachman of Bratzlav

Every time I take a nature walk, I look around and see so many beautiful trees looking back at me. They stand there in all their majesty, beckoning me to come closer, to pay attention to their silent dignity and to honor their resiliency. I see so many that I felt this post should be a sort of homage to the trees that welcome me on my walks around the neighborhood.

“One is wise to cultivate the tree that bears fruit in our soul.” Henry David Thoreau

Inspiration: What We See In Trees...

“The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity… and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.” William Blake

I seem to have a rapport with a particular tree. Every time I walk by it, the sun shines on it in an unusual way… But today when I went to capture it, the sun disappeared and all that was left was the tree, me… and the beauty of nature around the beautiful tree…I will go back another day, at sunset and see if the tree will let me capture and share what ethereal beauty it has shown me… Do we all see something in trees? Come back for more below. :-)
