Musings: Ten Tips For A Saner Life…

“He was saner than anyone — he had fallen out of the world of illusion: love, interesting work, hope for the future.” John Gardner

TO see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

I can’t believe we are already in the month of August, and on the homestretch to saying adieu to summer and hello to fall. This summer seems to have whizzed by and I’m not quite sure why. I’ve done my share of running around, and had my bouts of health related issues (Don’t you love those long-winded phrases? Yeah, sounds better than saying I’ve just been ill. ). Anyhow, recently, I read a terrific O Magazine article by Brené Brown that got me thinking about the idea of living life saner and authentically. She gave four tips/life lessons that resonated with me deeply, and I’ve added other tips to take us from here into the fall and beyond. I’ll include hers in this piece and give credit. All of our actions are tied to our emotions, and when we are pulled in many directions, we end up on an emotional roller coaster/merry go round. The following tips will help remind us to temper those swings and stay sane and calm. What would you recommend? Below are ten to mull over:
♥Self-Acceptance Is The Foundation to a Saner Life – Wherever you are, whatever you do, your sanity, happiness and sense of self begins with accepting you as you.
♥Fitting In Is Not Belonging – As Brené suggests in her piece, “Belonging starts with self-acceptance … Believing that you’re enough is what gives you the courage to be authentic.” (credit)
♥Constantly Comparing Self to Others Leads to Misery – Until we walk in another person’s shoes we don’t know their struggles, so stop the hand-wringing.
♥Perfectionism Is Not About Striving for Excellence – Instead of focusing on “How can I improve?” Perfectionism makes us re-frame our focus from excellence to subservience with the question: “What will they think?” (credit)

“The creative person is both more primitive and more cultivated, more destructive, a lot madder and a lot saner, than the average person.” Frank Barron

A robin redbreast in a cage 5
Puts all heaven in a rage.
A dove-house fill’d with doves and pigeons
Shudders hell thro’ all its regions.
A dog starv’d at his master’s gate Predicts the ruin of the state. 10
A horse misused upon the road
Calls to heaven for human blood.

♥ There Is Nothing To Prove, We Are Enough – Once you believe in yourself and believe you belong; here, there, anywhere, there is no need to convince others. Just be.
♥Vulnerability Is an Act of Courage - Pretending we never feel vulnerable is counterproductive to growth. Relax! “When you know what you’re feeling and why, you can slow down, breathe, pray, ask for support…” Brené Brown  (credit)
♥Envy Is A Waste Of Time – Envying another and feeding the green eyed monster of jealousy will diminish us and our skills.
♥ Self-Care means Nurturing All of Our Being – Exercise the body, mind and spirit and feed it uplifting messages.
With age comes a recognition that all those all night parties, both-end-candle burning and stress inducing moments have to be exchanged for healthier options or our health will give us hell to pay. Anytime we act in moderation, we add to prolonging and preserving our life. I’ve been taking classes, learning more about photography and, as a way to build a portfolio and work at getting better at the craft, I decided to enter a fun contest. I am a novice but I’m enjoying the process. Please check out my submission and support me through the “collect me” feature which is similar to a Like button. Inspiration: God’s Rosebud…

God will not let you go through more than you can handle. If you have a big challenge today, that just means you have a big destiny.”  Joel Osteen

Inspiration: God’s Rosebud…

GOD’S ROSEBUD
A new minister was walking with an older,
more seasoned minister in the garden one day.

Feeling a bit insecure about what God had for him to do, he was asking the older preacher for some advice.

The older preacher walked up to a rosebush and handed the young preacher a rosebud and told him to open it without tearing off any petals.

The young preacher looked in disbelief at the older
preacher and was trying to figure out what a rosebud could possibly have to do with his wanting to know the will of God for his life and ministry.

But because of his great respect for the older preacher, he proceeded to try to unfold the rose, while keeping every petal intact.

It wasn’t long before he realized how impossible this was to do.

My sisters sent this thoughtful piece to me and I felt that by sharing it, others would benefit greatly from it. Sometimes we forget to ask for help when situations in our lives are challenging or we take on herculean tasks we can’t complete. We might even imagine that we are alone in our struggles. If we give our best to a task, our effort will bear fruit. We can surrender our need to be perfect or right and admit that we have taken on more than we can manage…  Ask for help. To err is human. Reflections: Embrace the Light…

“Knowledge is like a candle… when one candle lights the other, it does not diminish from the light of the first.” Thomas Jefferson

Reflections: Embrace the Light…

Candle Flame by Morhardt Carmen Mencita Monoi Angel
sun has been shining through
the window screens today
warming our souls and bodies
counting this day as a new gift
thanking life for this blessing
measuring this passing day
with some gentle smiles
angel wings will fly them over
To lighten up at your place
a hazy blue candle flame flickering
through the thickening night! via poemhunter.com

There is always something beautiful and centering about the flickering flame of a lit candle. It pulls us inwards and helps us connect with that powerful source of divine, supreme energy known by many different names; God, shakti, life force… No matter what our day will turn out to be, we can choose to remain expectant that it will glow and flicker brightly like a flame, pulling in only what is needed to guide us and fulfill our day.

“Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life.” Buddha

Reflections: Embrace the Light… and a hug from Amma

Reflections: Embrace the Light…

Hugging is good medicine. It transfers energy,
and gives the person hugged an emotional boost.
You need four hugs a day for survival, eight for maintenance, and twelve for growth.
A hug makes you feel good. Grannymoon

If there is anything that gives comfort to the human heart, it is the warm hug we receive with love from another soul. Just like the flame draws us closer, the healing hug of a caring fellow human being, can transport us from a place of pain to a place of deep peace. It is a simple gesture of love and requires nothing from us but our freewill to connect. As Mātā Amṛtānandamayī Devī  would say, “Does the sun need the light of a candle? God needs nothing from us.”  Starting today, Mātā Amṛtānandamayī Devī , known affectionately as Amma the hugging saint, will visit Manhattan, at the Jacob Javits Center, for three days offering teachings and free hugs to all who need one.   Have you had your hug today?
