Musings: Laugh A Little…

“When you laugh, you change, and when you change, the whole world changes.” Dr. Madan Kataria

“What a kid I got, I told him about the birds and the bee and he told me about the butcher and my wife.” Rodney Dangerfield
“She said she was approaching forty, and I couldn’t help wondering from what direction.” Bob Hope
“When someone asks you the question, “Are you ticklish”, it doesn’t matter if you say yes or no, cause they’re going to touch you. If someone asks if you’re ticklish and you don’t want to be touched you should something like “I have diarrhea, now don’t touch me cause you’ll make it come out… and yes I’m very ticklish”. Demetri Martin
“I’d marry again if I found a man who had fifteen million dollars, would sign over half to me, and guarantee that he’d be dead within a year.”  Bette Davis
“I have everything I had 20 years ago, only it’s all a little lower.”  Gypsy Rose Lee

Humor is not as easy to write unless you have a knack for it and a funny bone always on call.  A good joke can get me out of a funk any day and since half of this blog is called Mirth, I try to add some occasionally to shift our mood. Hope you enjoy these. Do you have a funny line or two to share?

“Have you ever noticed that the lawyer always smiles more than the client?”  George Carlin

“All I do is eat and sleep. Eat and sleep. Eat and sleep. There must be more to a cat’s life than that. But I hope not.” Garfield
“How long have you known me, Jack? And you still don’t know how to spell my name.” (Upon receiving a cheque from Jack Buck made out to “Bearer”.) Yogi Berra
“Don’t knock the weather; nine-tenths of the people couldn’t start a conversation if it didn’t change once in a while.”  Kin Hubbard
“Good breeding consists of concealing how much we think of ourselves and how little we think of the other person.” Mark Twain
“It is even harder for the average ape to believe that he has descended from man.”  H. L. Mencken

George Carlin’s delivery always had me laughing before the end of his jokes… and sometimes I’d fantasize about what it’d be like to do stand up comedy. I imagined doing Jackie Mason like shtick and all. haha. I don’t know about you, but if there were a skill I could hone to perfection, it would be humor… Go figure.

Reflections: Let That Anger Go…

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it–always.” Mahatma Gandhi

Reflections: Let That Anger Go…

Let That Anger Go by eof
Let That Anger Go
Before it finds a home here
In a wintry heart…

Let that Anger Go
Before the tides return to shore
Debris on my face…

My dear blog friend Amira at Mindblur wrote a powerful piece that got me thinking about all the things that used to piss me off and make me so angry… And I thank Amira for the reminder and courage to share; as speaking the truth has power… and is never easy. Plus, it empowers us all. My haiku/poem speaks to those emotions around anger and their impact… Letting go is best.

“Let us not look not back in anger, or forward with fear, but around in awareness.” James Thurber

Reflections: Let That Anger Go…

Let that Anger Go
Hate leaves marks on the hater
Raging birds retreat…

Let that Anger Go
Ancient wounds have not used me
The soul has moved on…

Over the years, I raged about injustice, inequities, all the isms, prejudice, betrayals, deceptions and denials, the sanctimonious self serving despots, and more, and found that, with time, I had to let that stuff go. I just had to come to terms with the fact that countering hate with hate is self defeating. Only evil can come of it and when we wish to live in a just world, we must make equanimity paramount in our lives. It is not easy, but it is worth fighting for. Humor helps too…

“For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Reflections: Let That Anger Go…

Let that Anger Go
For fear it leaves ugly marks
Etched on our faces…

Let that Anger Go
The minaret bears witness
Secret crimes exposed…

Sure, there are things that annoy me still, but I see them for what they are, temporary distractions, then move on. If there are things that need to be addressed, address them. If there are things that linger, surrender them to a higher power and trust that eventually they will dissipate. There is no doubt in my mind that there is much in the world to make many of us mad on a daily basis, but we can counter it by choosing to invoke and see the good in humanity. More below

Reflections: Your Heart Knows What Counts…

“Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.” Albert Einstein

Reflections: Your Heart Knows What Counts… Flowing Heart Water – Mirth and Motivation

Kindness in words creates confidence.
Kindness in thinking creates profoundness.
Kindness in giving creates love. Lao Tzu

What really matters to you? What truly counts? If all the glitz and glamor are swept away, and you must turn to what will sustain you, what will you choose? What counts for you? Kindness, Life, Love, Laughter, Longevity…? Health, Happiness, Home and Hearth…? Friends, Family, Funds, Fame…? Drop the shame of failure… We all fail at something. You count. Your Heart Knows What Counts…

“When you love you should not say, “God is in my heart,” but rather, “I am in the heart of God.” Khalil Gibran

Reflections: Your Heart Knows What Counts… Flora and Fall – Mirth and Motivation

Nothing you love is lost. Not really.
Things, people –
they always go away, sooner or later.
You can’t hold them,
any more than you can hold moonlight.
But if they’ve touched you, if they’re inside you,
then they’re still yours.
The only things you ever really have
are the ones you hold inside your heart. Bruce Coville

We all want to be loved and respected for who we are and as we are; flaws and all… and that is fine. But we must love and respect ourselves first; hold love inside our hearts. Seek a higher, spirit love. The rest is fleeting. Your Heart Knows What Counts…

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch,
a smile, a kind word, a listening ear,
an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring,
all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
Leo Buscaglia

To turn our lives around demands standing in the glaring light of truth about who we are and be at peace with it. Be kind to others but stand in your own shoes. Many are swayed by a mob mentality and follow blindly, like the misconceived idea of lemming “mass suicide,” for fear of being ignored or not liked. But which truly matters? Living your vision or living another person’s dreams and decisions? Your Heart Knows What Counts…

“The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.” E. E. Cummings

Flora in Purple - Mirth and Motivation

Reflections: Your Heart Knows What Counts… Flora in Purple – Mirth and Motivation

To find the best in others,
to appreciate beauty,
to laugh often and much,
to leave the world a little bit better,
whether by a healthy child or garden patch,
to know one life has breathed easier because you lived,
this is to have succeeded. Ralph Waldo Emerson

Encouragement, laughter, love, compassion, kindness, appreciation, gratitude, and giving others the benefit of the doubt enrich us as much as it enriches others. Cancel out the noise and choose how you use your gifts to help others… many approaches exist. Your Heart Knows What Counts… To create your own photo collages, go to pixlr express. More below!
