Musings: Waiting To Be Happy…?

“Don’t wait around for other people to be happy for you. Any happiness you get you’ve got to make yourself.” Alice Walker

Musings: Waiting To Be Happy…? Start NOW!

“You must make a decision that you are going to move on. It wont happen automatically. You will have to rise up and say, ‘I don’t care how hard this is, I don’t care how disappointed I am, I’m not going to let this get the best of me. I’m moving on with my life.” Joel Osteen

I met my friend Cheryl for coffee at Starbucks today. We hadn’t seen each other in ages and we were excited to meet, share coffee and a good laugh, and catch up on our lives. Cheryl has always had a good sense of humor and an easy smile, and I wondered out loud how we let life’s unrelenting demands interrupt the flow of our friendship. Needless to say, a lot has happened since we last hung out and, as we joyfully shared our stories back and forth, we paused to comment on the magical quality of true friendship.

The bond of friendship remains strong even when we leave to meet other challenges. When we return, the joy and happiness flow freely like a stream that never dries up. We have to choose to return though, and, like happiness, waiting for the perfect time/day/hour/ moment to make that connection is a waste of precious energy. Our time to be happy, to bond with friends, to make amends, to abandon inconsiderate habits is now. We must decide to make peace with our old painful stories and move on for the sake of our happiness. What are we waiting for?

“Waiting for someone else to make you happy is the surest way to be sad.” Jeffrey Benjamin

Musings: Waiting To Be Happy…? Choose it.

“If you know you have to wait anyway, why not make a decision to enjoy your life while you’re waiting? Why not be happy while God is in the process of changing things? After all, there’s nothing we can really do to make it happen any faster. We might as well relax and enjoy our lives, knowing that at the appointed time God is going to bring his plan to pass.” Joel Osteen

After our coffee and chat, we walked over to Mrs Greens Market to see what new products they carried; they carry lots of organic products and window shopping there is a great way to learn about new produce and products in the marketplace. As we walked up and down the crowded aisles, we were struck by the explosion of color from all the displayed items competing for our attention. They had an endless selection of teas, soaps, skin care and food products for sale.

Aisle after aisle, I thought how fortunate some people are in the US to have such choices, yet, how sad it is that many in our world don’t have the option to choose their foods. When we stop to think about the inequities in society we realize that some might take longer to resolve and we can help by being proactive. We can volunteer our skills and knowledge, and commit to help/serve each other… Happiness will meet us there too. It is ironic that in the midst of such abundance, there is abject poverty here in the US. We can choose to make a difference; even if our lives are not perfect.  Soon, Cheryl and I came to a card display with tons of inspiring messages. I took lots of pictures; some I’ve shared here too. Inspiration: Everything Can Change For the Better…

Recently, I read a post from Joel Osteen titled Don’t Give Up. I get his inspiring tips and prayers - Today’s Word  – daily, and the timing of it was perfect. Joel’s post was exactly the message I needed to hear at that moment because I was struggling with some important change that had to be made. His soothing words and thoughtful, prayerful advice calmed me and, on reflection, I knew that I could meet the challenge ahead and battle it. The exact details are irrelevant, but what rings true for all of us is that we all experience life’s turbulence at different periods in our lives and nothing is more comforting than a kind, hope-filled and uplifting word. Since words carry enormous power and energy, we recognize and appreciate positive words and must be careful how we use words in our daily exchanges too… Everything can change on the turn of a word. Yes, you have won! Yes, you are hired! Yes, you have a clean bill of health! Yes, the project is done! Yes, to life…

“What can we take on trust in this uncertain life? Happiness, greatness, pride – nothing is secure, nothing keeps.” Euripides, Hecuba

Joel advices us in that message to “Choose to be around people who are going to encourage you and fill your heart and mind with God’s Word. Let a song of praise come out of your mouth.”  This is important because sometimes, our negative attitude and experiences are a result of the company we keep. If we surround ourselves with toxic people, then our efforts at positive change becomes a cumbersome ordeal. Things can and do change for the better… But first, we have to do our part with focus and a positive spirit. If we fall down while we are in the middle of our struggle for change, lets get up and chalk it up to the removal of another obstacle in our path. Everything changes for everyone and can change for the better… Believe it.

If you get Rolling Stone magazine, you might have read the riveting interview/story on homelessness by Jeff Tietz. The article “The Fallen,” walks us through the ever changing, shift-shaping lives of several people; families, elderly, young folk coping with homelessness. These are people from all walks of life whose worlds unraveled when they lost their homes, jobs, emotional support system,  and perhaps their mental stability. As Jeff put it, “They had good, stable jobs – until the recession hit. Now they’re living out of their cars in parking lots. The sharp, sudden decline of America’s middle class… ” Yet, in the midst of all that pain and suffering, profound changes occur. Some find new homes, new ways of handling the shame, new meanings about life, about people,   and above all, about themselves. On the surface, much might not change but on the inside, many have shifted their attitude and their thinking… Everything can change for the better. More below!

Inspiration: Nik Wallenda – The Impossible is possible…

“I think that’s what life is about. We all go through challenges. But once we get through them, we look back and say look how much our lives have changed by going through that challenge.” “If you can focus on the other side, when you look back it makes it that much easier.” Nik Wallenda on ABC

Last Friday, June 15th, Nik Wallenda walked across the raging waters of Niagara Falls on a highwire with prayers on his lips and a harness at his waist to help break a fall. He became the first person to complete that daring task and accomplish a lifetime dream that would have made his great grandfather, Karl Wallenda proud. Nik Wallenda is a seventh-generation member of The Flying Wallendas; a family of aerialists led by the late Karl and known for their daredevil feats performing highwire shows without a safety net. Throughout the 25+ minute walk, he prayed. On Good Morning America, Nik said, “I really prayed non-stop… The Bible says pray without ceasing and I’m always praying.”

“What is the purpose of your trip sir?” the Canadian Border agent asked. “To inspire people around the world,” Nik Wallenda (Arriving on Canadian side)

What made Nik’s performance particularly powerful was the fact that he came to the task prepared and humble. At 200 feet in the air, Nik braved the winds and spray mist as he ambled across, what ABC news described as, a two-inch-wide wire strung over the raging waters of Horseshoe Falls, the largest of the three falls that make up Niagara Falls. Braving blinding winds and mist, the 1,500-foot walk took him a little more than 25 minutes to complete. The lesson for us is not only about going out on a limb to achieve our dreams, but also to be prepared, focused, and faithful to our original goal; to imagine the impossible as possible. More below!
