Earth Day 2013 – The Face of Climate Change

Meditate it Forward – Free Meditation – Pass it On

Happy Earth Day, today and every day! One thing that becomes apparent in the spring is how the landscape changes from barren to fecund. It seems magical but, in truth, our love for Mother Earth is reflected in the fullness of spring that surrounds us. If we live in areas that have decimated the natural landscape, then the full expression of spring and her glorious, vibrant beauty is diminished; muted by the abuse… We experience the results of how the earth is treated in our part of the planet. Even if we didn’t contribute directly, we see the outcome in nature. Such is life and the impact positive/negative actions have on us all.

“Mother Earth is speaking to us. We all have the same message: create an energy shift upon Mother Earth.” Chief Arvol Looking Horse

Can we mitigate it? Yes. Every bit we do from recycling plastics, to planting trees, to conserving energy will make a difference. Meditation, prayer, music and a spirit of gratitude can make a difference too. Last year, I suggested five things we could do to make earth day a daily occurrence. In 2011, I offered 10 practical things to do This year, given the horrific acts of violence that continue to rip our world and relationships apart, I believe we must go within and look at our hearts and find healing, compassion, peace, forgiveness, hope, gratitude and love there. Where there is love and gratitude, violence will not thrive. More below!

Earth Day 2012: Five Ways To Make Every Day Earth Day…

“There is hope, if people will begin to awaken that spiritual part of themselves, that heartfelt knowledge that we are caretakers of this planet.” Brooke Medicine Eagle

Water
1. Use only the water you need, and reuse when possible.
2. Help keep water clean by using biodegradable and environmentally friendly cleaning products.
3. Dispose of solid and liquid wastes and medications safely.
4. Protect your local water source from pollutants, excess pesticides and garbage. via EPA

By the time you read this post, Earth Day will be an afterthought, a fading celebration, or hopefully, a reawakening of the critical need for all of us to acknowledge our role in sustaining or destroying our planet. Every year Earth Day arrives, I find myself wondering out loud why our planet which nourishes us every day, 24/7, gets one day of recognition. Why not every day? This year, The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has initiated a pick5 program to help us celebrate the earth daily, and is offering us many ways to commit to protecting our global environment this Earth Day and beyond. This is exciting news because we can make a sincere commitment to be proactive in our relationship with the earth.

Earth Day: Five Ways To Make It Earth Day Every Day... Reduce and Recycle.

Air
1. Use human powered modes of transportation to get from place to place! Walk, jog, skip, ride a bike instead.
2. Pass on gas! Take public transportation, carpool, plan your day to reduce trips and vehicle emissions.
3. Make sure your home’s air is healthy. Tip! Test, Fix and Save a Life from Radon, a colorless odorless gas.
4. Buy locally, or grow your own! Reduce air pollution caused by food and goods transport.
5. Reduce your potential for exposure to mercury.
6. Plant a tree. Or plant many trees!
7. Prevent additional air pollution by finding alternatives to burning your waste.via EPA

To continue our efforts to honor Mother Earth, we can choose to do certain earth sustaining, carbon reducing actions, and we have five areas to choose from: Water, Air, Land, Energy, Waste, and then there is a sixth area, Advocacy. The information in block quotes, above and below, are suggested activities from the EPA that we can perform in each of the six areas of the environment.  What are you doing on a regular basis to protect our environment? What would you add to the suggestions ? More below.

Happy Earth Day all! The last several weeks have been incredibly hectic on my end. We’ve spent time traveling with our college bound twins to make final visits to various accepted student dates and on each visit, looking around college campuses and the surrounding areas, I was reminded of the beauty of the American landscape and, by extension, of our earth.  Today, coming back from a visit to the Northwest, I looked around at the airport and marveled at the array of stores and stuff and the enormous amounts of energy expended at airports.  So with this in mind, I approached my earth day post from a practical perspective. Below are ten things we can do to conserve energy, support our environment and cut down on waste.  The accompanying photos from NASA showcase the magnificence of the earth. Come back for the photos! :-)

AT HOME
♥Make note of the day your family decides to rethink energy use. Fix leaky faucets, buy less, recycle, run dishwasher when full, buy low volume toilets and shower heads. Create a goal and reward for the family by using a portion of money saved for an outing or treat.
♥Plan your food menu before leaving for the supermarket. This is huge as a shopping list can curtail our temptation to overspend on food that gets wasted.
♥Make a family fun evening exercise of searching for draughty areas in the home and sealing any exposed gaps or holes.
♥Create a plan of buying or making crafty switch-off stickers for the light switches, plugs and phone chargers in your home and have the family go from room to room placing them.
♥A very important energy saver is carpooling during the school year. Team up with other parents; your children’s friends parents and organize outings in turn. We do a version of this at home.

Lyrics for the Earth Day Anthem (Wikipedia)
Joyful joyful we adore our Earth in all its wonderment
Simple gifts of nature that all join into a paradise
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love through out all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love through out all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world

Again,Turn off lights, Recycle, Conserve water & energy, Minimize use of bottled water, Public transport or drive fuel efficient cars, Start a compost heap with household leftovers, Grow some of your own foods, Go green… What habits have you decided to change for Earth Day? More Below.
