Weekly Photo Challenge: Boundaries… Plus Neighbors
I live in the suburbs; in an area with plenty of white tailed deer. They don’t care about fences, walls or any other boundaries; when they see food or shrubs they want, they go get it. They are my neighbors of sorts. They are not scared of me or anyone else for that matter. Our history goes way, way back. Well, for me it does. I’ll explain in the next paragraph. You see, before homes and people encroached on their territory, they owned the land. When homes were built in the 1950s and on, they moved deeper into the woods but never left town… Why should they? Wouldn’t you stick around to protect your land or at least salvage what’s left for your progeny? Did I already say they owned the land? Exactly…. and they still do.

As for my personal history with my neighbors, the deer that is, we connected when I decided to bring Holland to my home. I planted over a thousand tulip bulbs over a three year period… Yes, in 3 1/2 years they were gone… Bambi and his/her relatives came to dinner… often. They decimated my garden and ate everything but the poisonous plants. I tried everything short of… Nothing worked. Even one avid gardener friend, who lived further up north, claimed she planted extras and they would have some and leave some for her to enjoy. Her deer neighbors must not be street smart NY deer, I figured… Why leave some behind right? Finally, I said sayonara to my tulip bulbs and planted some shrubs.
