♥Think through that blog name ~ Choose one carefully and think long term
♥Invest in a custom domain name and use it ~ Buy your name and use it
♥Brand your blog name across a few social media sites not all ~ Stay involved
♥Blogging, like any small business, has growing pains ~ There are quiet and busy times, and times to change direction
♥The blogosphere is a microcosm of the real world ~ There are nice and nasty folk in the community and we learn to seek like-minded bloggers

20 Things I Wish I Knew About Blogging: When I launched my WordPress blog in late 2008, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I knew people across the globe were writing blogs about all sorts of things, and I had an idea of what a blog looked like but not much else. Back in the early 2000s, I had checked out a few top blogs on the internet and found it fascinating that some bloggers were not shy about taking positions on controversial subjects and that all had their soap boxes of opinions. Some were personal blogs, others offered information, education or inspiration.

♥If you want a future in it, treat it like a business ~ This means setting clear goals and managing its growth
♥Quality will always trump Quantity ~ Great original content that helps others learn remains king, and will always bring traffic = fewer better posts.
♥Don’t wait forever to monetize ~ If earning some income is a goal, start building towards that end and then do it whether WordAds, Affiliates or other.
♥Blogging Can be Healing ~ Writing a motivational blog can offer some surprising insights and rewards
♥The Blog Tank empties/dries; its okay to take five but be consistent ~ Bloggers  need time to regroup and rejuvenate. Take it!

To spur me on, my cousin Frieda who was an HP engineer at the time, offered to build a website/blog page for me and I agreed. She built it, I played around on it for a few weeks and then let it fade into obscurity. When I returned to the medium in 2008, I was ready to write, engage, support, promote, build community, align my blog with other service oriented, do good groups and grow.  But, I had no clue how to accomplish any of it.  I joined a few communities: Problogger, SITSGirls, CopyBlogger, and later Daily Post and a few others, and I took workshops to help the blog along; my posts got better. By 2010, traffic was growing but not the readership; that would come later. I persevered and kept blogging and connecting.

♥Protect and Maintain other interests ~ Blogging can be all consuming, so it’s wise to determine how much time is feasible to assign elsewhere
♥Focus, focus, focus ~ Whether we create a niche or not, become an advocacy blog  or not, find a focus and make your blog matter. we can offer a bit more.
♥Building a Readership is important and maintaining it is a full time job ~ Even if we fail first, keep working on connecting with the readers as it is worth the effort.
♥Google Stuff happens: ~ From re-calibrations to Panda, Google makes changes that can kill or increase our traffic in a blink. Key is to keep building great content
♥Get a grip on SEO and HTML basics ~ learning even a smidgen on both can bring great changes and pay dividends in polishing and highlighting our blogs

During those early days, I wasn’t focused much on a name and learned the hard way when a name I chose for my blogger blog was bought by someone else, and I had to change the blog name. Instead, I spent more time meeting other bloggers on line, connecting and interviewing people through social media, and trying out new things, like blog hops, blog carnivals, special promotions or conferences to help my blog grow….  At some point, I had decided to maintain two blogs on different platforms (WordPress and Blogger) to see which I like best. They are quite different blogs (even typealyzer agrees) and I soon learned it meant more work to do. Contd. More below!

Five Basic Tools To Bionic Blogger-hood…

Grace is available for each of us every day – our spiritual daily bread – but we’ve got to remember to ask for it with a grateful heart and not worry about whether there will be enough for tomorrow.” – Sarah Ban Breathnach

Road to Bionic Blogger: The distant volcano is soon conquered...

Recognizing Grace: Five Basic Tools On the Road to Bionic Blogger…
Recently, my good friend, Rose, blogger/writer at What’s My Plaza, sent me a quick note via Facebook. It had to do with our blogging efforts and such. What struck me was the alliteration; bionic blogger, that was part of the note. “You are now the bionic blogger with your 365 day challenge!”  She meant our  WordPress DailyPosts PostADay/Week in 2011I read it and chuckled. Perhaps you are a bionic blogger but, for now, I’m far from being one. I’m on the road like you, you and …?

I re-read the note and laughed because it was a powerful visual image; like the energizer bunny. Plus, if there is one thing we must learn to do on our blogging journey, it is to learn to laugh  with others and at ourselves. Trust me, it will help ease the stress when crap stuff happens! ;-)

What an interesting concept, I thought, as I visualized a blogger in bionic gear; just like the lovely Lindsey Wagner used to wear back in the days of the popular TV show – The Bionic Woman. I had to laugh out loud and, of course, look back on my blogging her-story. :-) Take a moment and look back on your blogging history too. Are you satisfied with the effort you are making?

The WordPress DailyPost2011 blogging challenge got me on the road to daily posting and while I am flattered by my friend’s comment, I am but one of thousands of bionic bloggers out there; bloggers on the WP 2011 challenge, mom bloggers and their giveaways, a-list bloggers and on and on…

For budding bionic bloggers,  five tools stand out as helpful to staying the course. I will list them, cover each one with additional details that helped me, and provide a few links to some awesome bloggers with great tools/tips below. Make sure to stop by often as I will update the list by adding valuable posts from blogging warriors/goddesses on the path. :-)

Persistence: Lights. Blog. Action!

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Calvin Coolidge

Creative Persistence: Lights. Blog. Action!
Everyday, bloggers everywhere wake up pondering what their next 5, 15, 50th posts will be. Where will we find, in the recesses of our creative reserves, material to share with some modicum of enthusiasm? Some days are easy because the ideas just pop up and we run with them. Other days are a bitch as everything sounds ho-hum and nothing gets us excited…. What to do?

Wouldn’t it be extraordinary, if we had a team of brilliant directors feeding us blog ideas and glorious images to help us on our way to blogging stardom? Wouldn’t it be an amazing gift to bat an eyelid and have all 354 remaining posts written and ready… :-) Okay calm down, I have a few tips as there is no magic pill; just focus on good old persistence and hang out with some smart creatives; as per the persistent geniuses below…

Recently, I came across an impressive group of highly creative and talented directors and want to share a few of their special behind the scenes projects/works with you. The imaginative minds behind The Directors Bureau and their tdbspecialprojects site include an admirable list of Hollywood film directors; M Blash, Andy Bruntel, Sam Brown, Todd Cole, Sofia Coppola, Roman Coppola, Patrick Daughters, Nash Edgerton, Romain Gavras, Mike Maguire, Melodie McDaniel, Geoff McFetridge, Aaron Rose, and Shynola

What do they do? Aside from their original contributions in the film industry, work they do publicly and professionally, they run tdbspecialprojects as a laboratory or innovative warehouse where imaginative ideas and projects percolate, and where potential clients can consult with them on developing visual concepts for a brand launch or re-launch.

I was drawn to their work because, first off, I joined WordPress DailyPost/PostADay2011 challenge and secondly,as a blogger, there are times when I run dry of ideas and have to reach out to other sources for rejuvenation. Of the wonderfully fun and inspiring projects I checked out on the tdbspecialprojects site, a few struck me as quite smart and entertaining: :-)

The Sports Limousine

The Sports Limousine
The sports Limo was definitely out of a 2025 Batman Movie; I totally channeled that car and next thing I was “cruising” down Sunset Blvd (LA cops hate “that”) headed for the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. It sent me into a day dream of stepping out of that long slick, original design of a car right onto a red carpet event; I’m winning an award for something – Lights. Camera . Action!

The Idea Generator

Creative Persistence: The Idea Generator via tdbspecialprojects

Idea-Generator
The idea generator led me down the road to writing this blog post. It’s a gadget with words that line up in three segments to give you creative prompts. It would be an incredibly innovative gadget if the generated ideas also produced images to complement them… I love visuals combined with words. Wouldn’t it be great to flip a switch and the next great blog topic comes leaping at you … Hm mm, wishful thinking but not entirely :-)

Be A Star!

Persistence: You're a Blog Star Babe!

Be-A-Star
Be-A-Star was such a hoot! This innovative way of adding your name digitally to a Hollywood blvd star on the Walk of Fame is quite ingenious and funny. Trust me, watch the vimeo as it gives you the full picture. Now that’s something to make sure you do if you only had an hour to fake out spend in Los Angeles. ;-)

Think Bubble

Think Bubble is a Fun idea...

Think-Bubble
Last but not least is my favorite, the think bubble! The idea is that it creates huge word images captured in a bubble and is placed in key locations as part of an ad campaign, brand spotting, or an outrageous wedding proposal… Now that’s a thought. . It could be used in other ways that would make writing special words in the sky so much more fascinating. Of course, getting airspace permission could prove sticky but having a bubble positioned above a landmark with something smart written would be memorable, no? Check these awesome guys out and let me know what your enjoyed most on the tdbspecialprojects site. Enjoy! :-) This post was adapted from one of my Positive Kismet blog posts.

Food for Thought: How do you generate ideas for your blog? Where do you get ideas for your blog? Would you blog frequently if you had a ton more ideas to share? … Do share your thoughts. Thank You!

Positive Motivation Tip: Be persistent: Ideas come and go, forever changing like the weather.
