Haiku: The Tunnel Of Emptiness

06/02/2014

“We cannot let another person into our hearts or minds unless we empty ourselves. We can truly listen to him or truly hear her only out of emptiness.” M. Scott Peck

Contemplating a fort with point arches – the Tunnel of Emptiness

Apathy found me…
A tunnel of emptiness
Dank … bereft of love

Śūnyatā taught me…
Emptiness makes room for grace
Dark  … to glowing light

Each week,  through the generous guides at The Daily Post,  we receive wonderful prompts to explore.  Every day, a new prompt gives us the opportunity to dig deep and find answers buried somewhere in our creative toolbox. They also offer the Weekly Writing Challenge on Mondays and we get to write a creative post of about 1000 words or less. This week, we get to pick one or two of four photos; each with a special word attached. We  can write any type of creative post using the word and photo. I picked two photos to write on – Emptiness and Creativity… Co-joined twins; we need one to attract the other. Hope you like them!

“We shape clay into a pot, but it is the emptiness inside that holds whatever we want.” Anon

Creative and colorful shot of man behind windows with bars

Creativity in a burst of color juxtaposes an image of a man behind bars.

The emptied heart knows
Creativity will thrive
Behind barred windows

Emptiness inspires
Flowing fountains of color
A Tunnel of hope

What are your thoughts? What creative impulses were triggered by the photos? Please share your thoughts in a comment below. Thank you!

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Weekly Writing Challenge: The one-word captions — from contemplation to emptiness. For this week’s challenge, use one of the images in this gallery as a starting point for a short story, poem, free-write, or musing on whatever you’d like. The one-word captions — from contemplation to emptiness — are things I personally think about when I view these images.

Positive Motivation Tip: In our empty spaces are profound discoveries… Go there and refresh your creative spirit.

I love this. When I see the hallway and its darkness before I would be scared to go through that tunnel because of fear now I look fear in the eye and I will seek out the tunnel and have faith something is on the other side.

I have really enjoyed reading the haikus that you’ve posted here. They are really thought provoking!!

    Eliz,
I particularly love your phrase: emptiness inspires flowing fountains of color.

While emptiness has not always been a source of creative power for me, there are times that I have had a profound experience of deeper and more vivid colors flowing out of emptiness on several occasions in my life. You give me a good reminder to remember to empty myself as I seek to be more deeply creative.
    Karen

I love the sentiment about an empty clay pot. If we are full, we can’t hold anything new. That was definitely a ‘light bulb’ moment for me. Thank you!

You are really great at Haiku’s. I have never been good at them. Yours are so beautiful 🙂

  10. 06/02/2014 5:32 pm

I haven’t written Haiku in a long time. I should start again. I really love the colorful ribbon painting.

  11. 06/02/2014 6:45 pm

What a great job with the haiku. And I love that second image. So pretty and bright.

Haiku: I traveled the world, only to find, emptiness in my heart.

  14. 06/02/2014 8:21 pm

How beautiful. I wish I could write like this.

I also got a feeling of hope with the trailing ribbons. I think it’s because they’re colorful and bright.

When you use seventeen syllables there is more meaning than I could conjure up in a thousand words!

Very beautiful and thought provoking. You are very talented!

Great haiku! I used to share little tidbits of poems and short stories on my blog a few years ago. I really wish I had time to get back into doing that!

I never knew you were supposed to SAY that you were using a writing prompt – just go for it. The scenic photo of the tunnel is actually very nice.

Beautiful post! tunnels are scary, but there is always light at the end. By the way, there is a place we go to – it used to be a secluded place nestled in the cordillera mountains – the asin hot springs. Before you reach the place, you have to pass two tunnels. As kids, when people ask how long is the trip, we say two nights and three days (it actually takes only 30 minutes from the city) because we pass through two tunnels.

I think the prompts are great for keeping writing fresh. You did a great job!

Your Haiku is lovely! The prompts are a great idea but I don’t think I personally could write a Haiku

What a great thought that emptiness is just an open space for creativity. Wonderful Haiku thoroughly enjoyed them.

I see uncertainty in the first photo. It is like looking at a cave. It makes you think, should I go in or not?

  29. 07/02/2014 7:06 pm

This is so beautiful, I really wish I could write like this!

  30. 07/02/2014 7:26 pm

How do you get inspired to write? I’d love to do more creative writing!

  31. 07/02/2014 7:42 pm

I love the last photo. The brightness of the colors spilling out from the black/white bricks of the window. So cool.

  32. 07/02/2014 8:05 pm

I totally agree with you on being more creative when you are in your empty space. It’s hard to really sit down and think creatively when you have so much going on – you need to escape so that your mind is free to think.

I totally get that quote. When hubby is trying to tell me something, I have the hardest time focusing unless I drop what I’m thinking about and just plain listen.

Thank you for sharing this inspirational post. We tend to get overwhelmed by our busy lives, running after material things when all we need is to spread love and peace. Everything else will follow.
