Weekly Photo Challenge: Kiss

Weekly Photo Challenge: Kiss

The word Kiss comes from the old English word Cyssan, and it is used, by people of different cultures, to express a wide range of  emotions. A kiss can be used to express love and affection, respect, ritual greeting, religion, peace, and friendship. It can also be used in a Kissathon competition (more on that below). In reading up on the subject, I found that there are even more kinds/types of kissing: the French have 20 and Germans 30.  So, this four letter word that sometimes translates into “Keep It Simple Stupid” isn’t so simple after all.  I almost skipped this week’s photo challenge on Kiss because it is not what I typically photograph. But that is what makes our weekly effort such fun: we get to find photos that interpret the message in a creative way.  Hope you like the selection offered as I found a few tucked away …

“A kiss makes the heart young again and wipes out the years.” Rupert Brooke

Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat set record for LONGEST KISS EVER RECORD 2013

“How did it happen that their lips came together? How does it happen that birds sing, that snow melts, that the rose unfolds, that the dawn whitens behind the stark shapes of trees on the quivering summit of the hill? A kiss, and all was said.” Victor Hugo

Above, in the first set of pictures, I added photos of our friendly deer sharing an affectionate kiss. The collage is of the twin deer I mentioned in another post. They like to hang out in our yard with their mom. The second is a mom and child deer. Then I found this picture of my friend Miffy and her daughter, Aubrey, taken on her birthday at a club in Los Angeles; this is called an affectionate peck.  In the video, you can catch up on Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat from Bangkok, Thailand who held a kiss for 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds on this Valentine’s Day “kissathon” for a new 2013 world record, to be verified by officials from Guinness World Records. The video is quite funny. Watch it. Come back for more below!

“Ancient lovers believed a kiss would literally unite their souls, because the spirit was said to be carried in one’s breath.” Eve Glicksman

Weekly Photo Challenge: Kiss… Grand Central Terminal. can you find the kissing couple?

Animals display a lot of affection with each other and they are a joy to watch. The Rhino above were quite playful and kept us entertained. At one point they ignored us and nuzzled together. Sweet. The picture of Keith and Jean-Michel came from the Keith Haring retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum.  As I was looking for photos for this challenge, I saw this one.  Finally, I like to take pictures of people at Grand Central Station and so I looked at my collection of shots from that location. If you look closely, you’ll see a couple stealing a kiss… See if you can find them. I’ll add a close up of the couple later.

Thank YOU ALL For Your Support and Patience Do come back soon and I will be visiting you all shortly too. Thank you! Have a great weekend and thanks again for stopping by! :-)

*Please bear with me as I continue to catch up on reading and commenting on your blogs. Thank you all for your patience! :-)

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Weekly Photo Challenge: Kiss  In a new post specifically created for this challenge, share a picture which means KISS to you!  Kiss. There are a lot of ways to capture a kiss, between two people – lovers, family, friends; two animals, or even just the sending or receiving of a kiss.

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. I added some from Zemanta and a few from WP Daily Post below. Check out how others interpreted the theme – KISS –  also see below. ***

Positive Motivation Tip: All of us deserve love and affection and we can show it with a kiss. Here’s one blown to you with best wishes for great love in your life! Happy February!

Superb selection of kisses 😉 It is amazing how many kisses is flying around on this wonderful Earth and there is no room for showing them all? – Of course I love the deers kissing – and a parent kiss to the child – awesome. Thanks for showing and writing all Eliz 🙂

    • 16/02/2013 1:02 am

Thank you Mariane! This was a good lesson in learning to capture pictures outside of our familiar choices. I will make the effort to take photos that show a wider range of human emotion. I usually don’t take them because I view it as an act of intimacy, but I can take shots of friends kissing casually. 🙂 TY for your patience as I play catch up! 🙂

    • 18/02/2013 2:33 pm

Mariane, for some strange reason, I can’t access your blog posts at all. I keep getting 404 error messages. Any solutions?

Are you blowing one back to me? Or just quoting me? TY for your patience as I recover and catch up on everyone’s blogs… 🙂

      • 17/02/2013 11:32 pm

please recover, reaching the old energy!

Fabulous photographs, Kiss is language of love, that even animals understand, my day doesn’t without kissing my daughter.

But competition for longest kiss is bizarre

    • 17/02/2013 4:48 am

TY Meenakshi! Your practice sounds wonderful as an an expression of love for your child. As for the competition, if you watch the video, you’d see some contestants even fainted… Fascinating…

  5. 16/02/2013 2:43 am

A 58 hour kiss!!! You wouldn’t be able to spend a penny, drink anything, wash??? Imagine how both mouths would taste 🙂 🙂 🙂

    • 17/02/2013 4:51 am

Can you imagine!? If you watch the video, it’d confirm what you’re saying… I found it ,and the winning couple are quite impressive…. 🙂 TY!

  6. 16/02/2013 2:45 am

The deer kisses are the SWEETEST! I should’ve entered this challenge with http://cupcakepetrillo.wordpress.com/2013/02/14/love/
    🙂

    • 17/02/2013 4:54 am

TY Genevieve, I wish the shots were in better lighting… The exchange they had was so endearing that on a closer look, I knew they were perfect for this challenge. 🙂

  7. 16/02/2013 2:47 am

I always remember that scene at the end of the film “Love Actually”, where people meet at the airport, and the love and warmth which spilled out everywhere. The kisses and the simple joy and sense of coming home it showed always light up my day when I recall it.

    • 17/02/2013 4:57 am

Oh yes, now that you mention it, that was a lovely scene in the film. I enjoyed it very much too. I rarely take photos of people expressing such affection and will make the effort to do it without feeling like I’m invading their private or precious moments. TY! 🙂

  8. 16/02/2013 3:58 am

Beautiful collection of kisses – it’s said that a smile is the quickest way between people – kiss must be number 2 .. 🙂

    • 17/02/2013 5:01 am

TY for your insight! As I started reading up on the subject, it became quite the fascinating topic with a laundry list of types and rituals around it… I plan to go back and read some more later. 🙂

  9. 16/02/2013 6:10 am

Incredible selection of photos that all bring a smile. Thank you for sharing and thank you for the pingback.

    • 17/02/2013 10:38 am

Thank you Tammy for your feedback. I appreciate it! 😉

  10. 16/02/2013 6:49 am

Was thinking the same thoughts as Gilly…yuck! I guess i am not very romantic, or just too old 😀

    • 17/02/2013 10:39 am

Ha Ha! Madhu you should watch that video and then forgive me for encouraging you… 😆 I applaud the winning couple though.

  11. 16/02/2013 7:24 am

    Wonderful shots!
Hey, thanks for providing the history of the word, too. I’m totally fascinated by language and love reading anything about word origins. 🙂

    • 17/02/2013 10:49 am

Same here with the fascination. Once I started reading about it I was quite impressed. 🙂

  12. 16/02/2013 10:57 am

Wow I am glad you did not let this prompt go away unattended. You did an incredible job. And no I have not found the kissing couple yet but will shortly as soon as I change glasses!

    • 17/02/2013 1:08 pm

TY Chris ! You are such a trooper! They are to your left way back… This was a hard one to do because I don’t take pictures of people in intimate contact out of respect… I had almost nothing. 🙂

  13. 16/02/2013 12:59 pm

Wonderful photos – what a great job you’ve done on this prompt! 😀

    • 17/02/2013 1:36 pm

TY Dianne! You are so kind with your compliment and support… it was kinda hard for me but I’m glad I didn’t miss it. I was tempted too. 🙂

  14. 16/02/2013 6:54 pm

This was an inspiring topic! I always find it strange that Jamaicans almost NEVER kiss in public… for all sorts of complex reasons… Lovely photos and quotes (Victor Hugo was such a romantic!)

    • 17/02/2013 3:05 pm

You are so funny Emma! Maybe that is why I don’t even think to take such photos…cultural training!? 😆

  15. 16/02/2013 8:58 pm

Great photos, as always. You are the best at finding illustrations for the prompt! The doe and fawn are my favorite, though. 🙂

    • 17/02/2013 3:06 pm

TY Debra! You are so kind. It was a challenge though. 😉

  16. 17/02/2013 1:06 am

Thanks to my germs, nobody wants to kiss me right now 🙂

    • 17/02/2013 3:13 pm

What germs… Have you been sick with the flu again? Dear, dear Tilly! Do get better soon. 🙁

  17. 17/02/2013 2:42 am

    Deer.. kissing.. 🙂

    • 17/02/2013 3:18 pm

Isn’t that wonderful!? It’s really an affectionate sibling kiss. The deer on the ground was limping a little when they arrived and seemed in need of attention. Their mother stayed near it as they grazed. Then it sat down tired and took a nap and its sibling came over and nuzzled it awake… So Sweet. TY! 🙂

  18. 17/02/2013 4:55 am

I like the idea of spirit being carried in one’s breath. Sweet ❤

    • 17/02/2013 3:23 pm

Indeed I loved that too… It does make sense when you think about it. 🙂 TY!

  19. 17/02/2013 5:48 am

for someone who considered skipping the challenge, you did a beyond-thorough job of it! Thanks for the history on the word too. Who knew there were so many different kinds of kisses?
    Smooches from Maryland!

    • 17/02/2013 3:28 pm

TY BBC! I was going to skip it and them I decide to read up on it . That was when things got interesting… Lesson for me, keep moving forward and trying even when it seems pointless. 🙂

  20. 17/02/2013 7:21 am

Those are great. I wonder what the hippos were doing?

    • 17/02/2013 3:34 pm

I would like to believe they were nuzzling, but perhaps chatting might be what? 😆 TY Jacqui! 🙂

  21. 17/02/2013 2:57 pm

Great gallery, Elizabeth!!! Love it! 😉

    • 17/02/2013 8:28 pm

    • 17/02/2013 8:32 pm

TY Adin! I hope you watched the video as it’s a riot. 🙂

  24. 17/02/2013 6:31 pm

Thank you for the pingback! Lovely photos of the deer!

  25. 17/02/2013 6:47 pm

“the French have 20 and Germans 30” different kinds of kissing? If I’d been asked that question, I’d certainly have gotten it wrong.

  26. 17/02/2013 8:36 pm

I was surprised to read that too but it is a fascinating subject. TY! 🙂

  27. 18/02/2013 2:18 am

Loved the photos – off to give Ma Fightback a peck!

  28. 18/02/2013 6:16 am
