Musings: A Room Of Our Own…

11/02/2013

“We cast a shadow on something wherever we stand, and it is no good moving from place to place to save things; because the shadow always follows. Choose a place where you won’t do harm – yes, choose a place where you won’t do very much harm, and stand in it for all you are worth, facing the sunshine.” E.M. Forster, A Room with a View

AN UPDATED POST:

What room for self-discovery and reflection are you craving? At some point in our lives, we crave a space of our own; a feng shui certified room with a view of the ocean, huge bay windows, a thriving English garden below and enough light and sun to balance the space. It’s a room where we can convene with our muse, create masterpieces and recharge our batteries. It all sounds wonderful but the reality is often something different. To create, explore, and reinvent ourselves, we need our own space; psychic space, personal space, and even quiet space to do the inner work that is necessary for creative honesty. A few people actually have a dream space that exceeds my description. Some of us have rooms of our own that might have a few of what I listed above. Others have space within the home; a nook or corner table placed strategically against a wall and used for billing rather than writing. In a frantic world where there is much that can rattle us and interfere with our focus, it is imperative that we make room for ourselves and honor it.

In my college days, the picture above fit perfectly, and any serious writing projects had to be completed in the library. I was always distracted by some thing or the other and, in retrospect, I know it was the lack of privacy and the constant interruptions that made it a place that seemed to lack respite. I still crave my perfect space but for now, perhaps like you, an ideal room of my own exists in my mind’s eye.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for the writing space I share with my cat. He jumps around and tries to distract me, and the birds and deer drop in looking for food… Below, I found a picture of a room that might work, but it’s missing crucial elements from my list. What might that be?

More below.

“My father says there is only one perfect view, and that’s the view of the sky over our heads. I don’t care what I see outside… My vision is within! Here is where the birds sing! Here is where the sky is blue!” E.M. Forster, A Room with a View(George Emerson)

Why do we need a room of our own? Originally, when I went shopping for space to share, the genie was napping, and the only rooms I found with views of the ocean were not study rooms but living rooms. I can understand that because, as a home owner,  I would probably want to save the ocean view for my bedroom and living-room. It’s the norm, as those rooms are considered prime in a resale.  The first picture above is a recent addition and it features rooms we see in art. They are inviting, cozy and colorful… just what an artist would see and so I’ve included them in this post. The room below it is lovely; it’s modern but a tad sterile. I like clean modern lines with touches of warmth; pillows, plants and a fire place. Why is it important to carve out our own personal space? We all need places we can retreat to when the world outside is clamoring for things that wound our spirit and unsettle our peace of mind. So to have our own room with a view is the healing balm that makes our travails lighter. So, as I sit here at home writing, I’m inviting the genie to get busy because as far as I’m concerned, the dream room of my own is long overdue. What about you?

This was inspired partly by a Daily Post Prompt: Daily Prompt: Writing Room A genie has granted your wish to build your perfect space for reading and writing. What’s it like?

Today, when you open your cards, send a heartfelt wish of love to those who won’t be able to celebrate in the same way. Share a goodwill thought in your heart and  your kindness will reverberate and come back to you enriched. ✿♡✿Happy Valentine’s Day!✿♡✿

*Please bear with me as I’m finally beginning to catch up on your blogs and commenting… I’m back on track; albeit at a slow pace. Thank you all for your patience!

Positive Motivation Tip: A room of our own is an oasis for the soul… tread lightly.

Like most ordinary people on this side of the pond I have just the tiniest space imaginable!

Oh, you are not alone as tiny spaces are typical in NYC too. TY! 🙂

I took over the bonus room of our home. It is a huge empty space with a comfy sectional sofa and a folding table. Each night, I find time to go chill there and write, read, talk to friends or whatever.

Good for you and well deserved! It sounds like a wonderful space too. 🙂

Take you time, Eliz. I am just as slow in responding. Having a fireplace sounds an inviting space you have. Get that genie, pronto.

TY Seeker! I’m doing my best to catch up and dealing with other stuff offline… I remain faithful. TY! 🙂

I have my little space…and really I’m pretty content with it…more than I ever thought I would have…but, I too dream of the perfect place!

That is true for me too… It’s nice to appreciate gorgeous spaces but never to forget how grateful we are for our own. TY! 🙂

I love my new space and that big room you show wouldn’t do for me. I guess our rooms are as varied as our writing 🙂

    • 20/02/2013 12:13 pm

I like your space too… Got rid of the spider then, eh? That space is just a stock photo as I couldn’t find one that showed what I would truly love. 🙂 TY!

These days, I’m all about the view – preferably of the sea. It’s what I craved when I was in NYC, the water.
I agree, that room’s way too sterile. Hope you find that room soon, Elizabeth.

It’s okay to dream and imagine something more and then when it arrives… bliss. Otherwise… gratitude for what is. TY! 😉

I love big rooms, Eliz, and I can’ wait to move into our new home by the end of the year God willing 🙂

    • 20/02/2013 12:14 pm

Amen to that and I’d love to see photos too. 😉
