Weekly Photo Challenge: Unique…

02/02/2013

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unique… Seattle EMP Museum

This was a tough one for me to do because we can make the argument that everything is unique. Yet, from each person’s perspective, some things stand out a bit more than other things. I was quite impressed by the speed with which many of  my fellow bloggers responded to this week’s challenge. I was torn between buildings, people, places and a few things. Heck, at one point I thought “Put Tangy (our computer loving cat) up there, he’s unique.” But you’ve seen him several times.  I decided to go with a few buildings and Frank Gehry seems to follow me around or vise versa. The Gehry designed  EMP Museum (formely Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame or EMP|SFM)  in Seattle, Washington is such a massive convoluted structure that I had to create a collage from my pix and some Wiki pix to show you the many facets of that building. It’s next door to the Space Needle and Seattle Center monorail and worth a visit.

“The more you like yourself, the less you are like anyone else, which makes you unique.” Walt Disney

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unique… Richard B Fisher Center for Performing Arts

Another Frank Gehry inspired building is The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College in the Rhinebeck area of New York. This is another unique structure that would make you wonder how form and function join hands to maximize the use of a space. The Center above is functional with decent acoustics and once inside, it is easy to see  the simplicity and usability of the interior space. I love unique construction; especially if the architect works hard to defy gravity.  I suspect that Photo Challenge participants in Spain and other places with unique buildings are having fun with this exercise.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unique… Octagon House

The Octagon House, also known as the Armour-Stiner/Carmer Octagon home in Irvington, NY is  local to me and is quite the fascinating eight sided structure. I have been inside the home and no, it is not a Frank Gehry building. The historical society organized a tour some years ago and I signed on quickly; I walk by it on my Aqueduct walks and have always been curious about the inside.  The interior space has some rounded corners and you get the sense of being in a tight spherical space but not in every room.  Hope you enjoyed your visit. Do come back soon and I will be visiting you shortly too. Thank you! Have a great weekend and thanks again for stopping by! :-)

*Please bear with me as I continue to catch up on reading and commenting on your blogs. Thank you all for your patience! :-)

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Weekly Photo Challenge: Unique  Amaze us with your own interpretation of Unique  Maybe the image itself shows something distinct from its surroundings, or maybe it’s a unique take on a common subject. Maybe it’s a unique person in your life, or a treasured heirloom that’s irreplaceable. I’m excited to see what “unique” means to you! In a new post specifically created for this challenge, share a picture which means UNIQUE to you!

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. I added some from Zemanta and a few from WP Daily Post below. Check out how others interpreted the theme – UNIQUE – also see below. ***

My Friend, your photo challenge this is truly unique. You did an awesome job through the lens of your camera. I especially like quote by Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, because he was my role model. I had the opportunity to sit at his feet and study for two very important years of my life. Thank you for sharing and all that you do here in your ministry to advance the Kingdom work here on the earth. May God continue to bless you abundantly.

    • 08/02/2013 5:53 am

TY for the touching message Pastor D! I fell in love with Dr. Mays words as they resonated with me… I had no idea he touched your life in such a special way … Awesome! TY! 🙂

  5. 02/02/2013 8:21 am

Beautiful pictures, and yes, we are all unique. Isn’t that wonderful.

  6. 02/02/2013 8:34 am

Definitely unique. I’ve never seen anything like that! I’ve also never seen Tangy. I’ll have to wait till he makes it on another poet.

  7. 02/02/2013 9:06 am

Jaw dropping is the only way I can describe my reaction to so much ‘unique’! Beautifully done!

    • 08/02/2013 6:37 am

TY and he has created other buildings that simply float… I’m impressed too! TY! 🙂

  8. 02/02/2013 9:07 am

Great first quote–existential in nature and poignant.

    • 08/02/2013 6:44 am

TY and I’m a big fan of existentialism Sally! 🙂

  9. 02/02/2013 9:43 am

Agree with “jmgoyder” about the definition of unique… 😉

  10. 02/02/2013 11:10 am

Wow! Those buildings sure are unique, all right. I particularly like the octagon house. The others are just horrid! (Not the photos, the buildings. Sorry, I’m old fashioned. Even so, I’m pretty open-minded, but those buildings take weird to whole new level. How’d you ever find them?)

    • 08/02/2013 7:07 am

Cris TY! I had a good laugh when I read your comment… 😆 You are so honest. They are visually challenging yes! 😆
Find them? I visited all of the buildings I featured. I love architecture so I’m always on the lookout for the unusual. 🙂

      • 09/02/2013 8:01 am

Visually challenging . . . hmmm. I guess that’s the nice way to put it (PC). Well, keep up the good work.

    • 09/02/2013 2:27 pm

Right… PC for sure. TY! 🙂

  11. 02/02/2013 12:26 pm

Unique, he is, but every time I go to the Seattle Center, I am reminded of a gigantic crumpled up candy bar wrapper. I honestly think this guy makes it up as he goes along! Thanks for sharing, Elizabeth.

    • 08/02/2013 7:12 am

Probably Naomi! But you gotta give him his props for being daring! 🙂 TY!

  12. 02/02/2013 12:36 pm

    Lovely choices! 🙂

  13. 02/02/2013 1:39 pm

Very unique buildings. You said it was tough, but you pulled it off! 🙂

    • 08/02/2013 7:24 am

TY Tracy! It was tough… For some of the challenges, I know right away which photos would fit but this wasn’t so clear and so it evolved. 🙂

  14. 02/02/2013 2:04 pm

I did not know about either of the first two buildings but would love to visit both.

  15. 02/02/2013 2:22 pm

I like Seatle museum I would like to visite that museum 🙂

    • 09/02/2013 2:35 pm

    • 09/02/2013 2:44 pm

Well, next time you come to NY, give me a holla and we’d go see it together. TY! 🙂

  17. 02/02/2013 5:55 pm

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I am liking this not the picture but your uniqueness.

    • 09/02/2013 2:53 pm

You are unique too… and then some. I’ve been absent and well, sometimes life reminds us all that we need to go with the flow and not sweat it so much… TY!

  18. 02/02/2013 7:23 pm

Definitely unique. I have never seen these buildings until now, but I will remember them.

    • 09/02/2013 2:55 pm

Good and you won’t be disappointed when you see them. 😉 TY!

  19. 02/02/2013 11:25 pm

Beautiful and unique. It is a difficult challenge when most things in the world are unique! 😀

    • 09/02/2013 3:00 pm

True… It was a challenge as I’m aware of how it impacts our world and interactions in neg-/pos+ ways. TY! 🙂

  20. 02/02/2013 11:32 pm

These are all unique architectural masterpieces! Thanks!

    • 09/02/2013 3:04 pm

TY dear one! And there are other masterpieces out there by some amazing architects. I kept thinking of Antoni Gaudi and Dale Chihuly when I was doing this challenge. 🙂 TY!

  21. 03/02/2013 12:29 am

We all are told that everything else in the universe is extension of self, but is hard to imagine so many talented people a extension of I. I wish it were true!

    • 09/02/2013 3:06 pm

Same here Meenakshi and I feel the same way about it sometimes.. such a paradox. TY! 😉

  22. 03/02/2013 4:48 am

those are some amazing structures! great work, and you went to a lot of effort to pull this together! z

    • 09/02/2013 3:08 pm

TY Z! It was a joy to do… and now that I’m way behind on the Home challenge, I hope to get it out soon. 🙂

  23. 03/02/2013 7:14 am

Such a great interpretation of the challenge this week — architecture often is often such a unique expression of art ~ Kat

    • 09/02/2013 3:11 pm

Indeed. We see worlds in architectural designs and some magic too. TY! 🙂

  24. 03/02/2013 9:11 am

That octagon house is a trip! I would love to go through that!
    Love the Mays quote. Hmmmmmmm…

    • 09/02/2013 3:17 pm

TY You are same too. Unique Karen… Actually, we all are. — human, unique, flawed, blessed! TY 🙂

  26. 04/02/2013 3:08 am

Those first two buildings are about as unique as you can get… 🙂

    • 09/02/2013 3:21 pm

They are quite the experience up close… Like paper houses built with melted steel… TY! 🙂

  27. 04/02/2013 6:40 am

These are some wonderful examples of thinking outside the box! Great choices, Elizabeth.

    • 09/02/2013 3:23 pm

TY dear one… I’m glad you liked it. 🙂

  28. 04/02/2013 8:31 am

Those buildings are certainly unique, but I wouldn’t have minded seeing Tangy again. 🙂 I’m so glad we’re all unique. It makes life really interesting. 🙂

    • 09/02/2013 3:25 pm

TY Adin… you are so kind. I will add him to my Home post. Just sorting out some stuff offline… 🙂

  29. 04/02/2013 8:19 pm

Oh Frank Gehry, you are my architectural hero. I am completely in awe looking at these building. It’s amazing how a person’s mind can wander so much and put those imaginations come into effect. I have got to, got to, got to fly some day out of the state.

    • 09/02/2013 3:29 pm

Yes, I agree that you should visit Seattle, Balboa and anywhere else… You would most likely capture much better pictures than I did… You’d really love Seattle… Amazing city. Also Rhinebeck region is beautiful. TY! 🙂

  30. 04/02/2013 10:16 pm

I think my favorite quote of the day is the Disney one you cited. It made me smile.

  31. 05/02/2013 8:59 am

I have been to Gehry’s Bilbao Museum and thought it unique……these are even more so. Would love to see these in person.

    • 09/02/2013 4:41 pm

Well come on over to the USA and I’d be happy to go see one with you. They are quite the structures… TY! 🙂

  32. 06/02/2013 9:06 am

Beautiful digital pictures! Awesome. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  33. 07/02/2013 4:11 am

What! Elizabeth, are these real? Of ocurse they are. To my illiterate and un-exposed eyes, these ar really unique and awesome. Never seen anything like these before. 🙂 BTW, I love your quotes 🙂

    • 09/02/2013 4:44 pm

TY for the visit Cee! I’m making my way through the stuff to reach out to all soon… TY for your feedback. 🙂

  34. 07/02/2013 12:16 pm

I enjoyed this post very much, since I am quite familiar with Seattle EMP Museum. But I didn’t know any other buildings design by Frank Gehry. He is definitely a unique architect. Great quotes, as always.

    • 09/02/2013 4:46 pm

He is a remarkable man and even though he has, like any major talent, his share of detractors, he is quite the visionary. TY! 🙂

  35. 07/02/2013 2:00 pm

I really enkoy the way you look at things and that Richard B. Fisher Center for Performing Arts – OMG…what a wonderful building

    • 09/02/2013 4:48 pm
