Weekly Photo Challenge: Unique… Seattle EMP Museum

This was a tough one for me to do because we can make the argument that everything is unique. Yet, from each person’s perspective, some things stand out a bit more than other things. I was quite impressed by the speed with which many of  my fellow bloggers responded to this week’s challenge. I was torn between buildings, people, places and a few things. Heck, at one point I thought “Put Tangy (our computer loving cat) up there, he’s unique.” But you’ve seen him several times.  I decided to go with a few buildings and Frank Gehry seems to follow me around or vise versa. The Gehry designed  EMP Museum (formely Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame or EMP|SFM)  in Seattle, Washington is such a massive convoluted structure that I had to create a collage from my pix and some Wiki pix to show you the many facets of that building. It’s next door to the Space Needle and Seattle Center monorail and worth a visit.

Another Frank Gehry inspired building is The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College in the Rhinebeck area of New York. This is another unique structure that would make you wonder how form and function join hands to maximize the use of a space. The Center above is functional with decent acoustics and once inside, it is easy to see  the simplicity and usability of the interior space. I love unique construction; especially if the architect works hard to defy gravity.  I suspect that Photo Challenge participants in Spain and other places with unique buildings are having fun with this exercise.

The Octagon House, also known as the Armour-Stiner/Carmer Octagon home in Irvington, NY is  local to me and is quite the fascinating eight sided structure. I have been inside the home and no, it is not a Frank Gehry building. The historical society organized a tour some years ago and I signed on quickly; I walk by it on my Aqueduct walks and have always been curious about the inside.  The interior space has some rounded corners and you get the sense of being in a tight spherical space but not in every room.  Hope you enjoyed your visit.     My Friend, your photo challenge this is truly unique. You did an awesome job through the lens of your camera. I especially like quote by Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, because he was my role model. I had the opportunity to sit at his feet and study for two very important years of my life.     Wow! Those buildings sure are unique, all right. I particularly like the octagon house. The others are just horrid! (Not the photos, the buildings. Sorry, I’m old fashioned. Even so, I’m pretty open-minded, but those buildings take weird to whole new level. How’d you ever find them?)

      Find them? I visited all of the buildings I featured. I love architecture so I’m always on the lookout for the unusual. 🙂

    Unique, he is, but every time I go to the Seattle Center, I am reminded of a gigantic crumpled up candy bar wrapper. I honestly think this guy makes it up as he goes along! Thanks for sharing, Elizabeth.

    Oh Frank Gehry, you are my architectural hero. I am completely in awe looking at these building. It’s amazing how a person’s mind can wander so much and put those imaginations come into effect. I have got to, got to, got to fly some day out of the state.

      Yes, I agree that you should visit Seattle, Balboa and anywhere else… You would most likely capture much better pictures than I did… You’d really love Seattle… Amazing city. Also Rhinebeck region is beautiful. TY! 🙂

    I enjoyed this post very much, since I am quite familiar with Seattle EMP Museum. But I didn’t know any other buildings design by Frank Gehry. He is definitely a unique architect. Great quotes, as always.
