Weekly Photo Challenge: Beyond

“Vision – It reaches beyond the thing that is, into the conception of what can be. Imagination gives you the picture. Vision gives you the impulse to make the picture your own.” Robert Collier

I think of this line often… “Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” Yes, we are powerful but we must not abuse it or use it to hurt others. What we see and experience from our view up on a tall building, that sense of being on top of the world, might not be as great as what waits for us out there; beyond our limited vision of a much larger landscape. The rest is vanity…

Above is the Woolworth Building and beyond it is Brooklyn with the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges in view. I took this from the top floor of 7 World Trade Center. The BMW building was fun to shoot. I was in the Olympiaturm across the way and kept trying to capture the cylinders without too much sun reflection. I wonder what that light green building in the back is… any idea Frizztext? I took The Black Forest shot from Neuschwanstein Castle and it shows; Alpsee with locality of Hohenschwangau in front; 19th century Hohenschwangau Castle on a hill with Schwansee behind it on the right (west); town of Alterschrofen with town of Füssen behind it; core of Schwangau in front of large Forggensee reservoir. Faith consists in believing when it is beyond the power of reason to believe.” Voltaire

“I do believe that when we face challenges in life that are far beyond our own power, it’s an opportunity to build on our faith, inner strength, and courage. I’ve learned that how we face challenges plays a big role in the outcome of them.” Sasha Azevedo

I was visiting a little modern museum on the grounds of Willem de Conqueror’s Castle in Caen when I ventured up a stairway and there, before me, was a fantastic view of the entire city below. It was awe inspiring and there was a powerful presence in that captured moment; the way the old warriors might have felt after conquering a nation and viewing it from a hill top.  I had the same experience looking at Manhattan from 7 WTC, and at the Seattle landscape from the Space Needle … such magnificence.  Yet, I wonder why else we are so captivated by the view beyond. What are we looking for? I’ve added some information to the photos. Thanks for your feedback! More below!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Beyond… Oktoberfest

Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you” Nathaniel Hawthorne

I went hiking with my martial arts team and took the first shot at the top of the mountain. The High line Park in Chelsea area in NYC, and Oktoberfest in Munich were special outings, hanging out with friends I don’t see very often,  and so the memories will always return when I look at these shots. Sometimes, I wonder why we pursue the unreachable, the untouchable… the beyond.  Again, what are we looking for? What is it about our human drive that keeps us reaching or does it? I like Hawthorne’s advice.

I love the message of this quote: “Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them.” Albert Einstein. We take shots from tall buildings and then we want to climb higher. Next would be where? What?  Why? Any suggestions? Do stop by later as I dig deep for shots I took from other tall buildings like the Tokyo Tower. Thank you! Have a great weekend and thanks again for stopping by! :-)

*Please bear with me as I continue to catch up on reading and commenting on your blogs. Thank you all for your patience! :-)

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Weekly Photo Challenge: Beyond  Do you have a photo which invites the viewer to look beyond? Are there hidden depths in the background? Is the focal point just a framing for the rest of the picture? If it’s not clear why we should look beyond, tell us! Lead us through the story in your photo.  Share a picture which means BEYOND to you!

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. I added some from Zemanta and a few from WP Daily Post below. Check out how others interpreted the theme – BEYOND – also see below. ***

Awesome photos. And info. Thanks for the pingbacks 🙂

  2. 19/01/2013 7:38 am

I loved the quote about the butterlfy who lands like happiness on you, if you don’t chase it. I often think happiness is the byproduct of doing the right thing, and not the strategic thing. Thats why that statement is so powerful to me

    • 23/01/2013 2:37 pm

TY and I agree… often the strategic thing means a lot of pain to some and glory to others. I hear you. 🙂

  3. 19/01/2013 7:45 am

As usual, an amazing post with great writing, quotes, and pictures! I, too, am trying to get caught up on everything. It’s nice to be back!
    Peace,
    Alexandria

  4. 19/01/2013 7:45 am

    Great shots!

  5. 19/01/2013 7:53 am

Great quotes, especially the Hawthorne. Of all the photos I like the Downtown Manhattan best, the density of buildings is amazing. I always wonder of about the people in those blocks going about their business like ants, there must be so many of them.

    • 23/01/2013 2:44 pm

The density is amazing… So many buildings on top of each other… No wonder roaches thrive there. 😆 TY!

  6. 19/01/2013 7:54 am

Great as always Elizabeth. The photos, the quotes and the word itself, Beyond, spark the imagination. Love it! 🙂

    • 23/01/2013 2:45 pm

,,,somewhere beyond the dreams, someone is waiting for me…. a song in my heart. I like your quote about faith. Faith that surpasses beyond understanding.

    • 23/01/2013 2:47 pm

Yes, faith is a powerful thing and sees us through plenty. TY! 🙂

  9. 19/01/2013 10:41 am

I really like the Einstein quote too, it’s so right… 🙂

It’s maybe a bit strange but by knowing our limits,
then we become stronger and the limits more easy to move… 😉

    • 23/01/2013 2:48 pm

Yes, it caught my eye and I loved it… Quite deep and merits reflection… TY! 🙂

  10. 19/01/2013 11:17 am

  13. 19/01/2013 12:23 pm

The Einstein quote is fabulous (what an amazing man).

I also love to look out over the ocean wondering what is beyond – it’s a beautiful and serene feeling…

    • 23/01/2013 2:52 pm

Same here dear kindred spirit… TY for your patience as I’m finally catching up after an AWOL. TY! 🙂

  14. 19/01/2013 12:33 pm

What a wonderful post, Elizabeth! I loved the quotes as much or more than the photos, which were transporting.

    • 23/01/2013 2:53 pm

Great TY! I loved the quotes I gathered for this one too as they spoke to my heart. TY! 🙂

  15. 19/01/2013 12:45 pm

I love the encouragement to think beyond what we see today. So often if I have believed “today” was the end of the vision, I’d despair. But believing in another day to perhaps usher in some necessary changes or revisions is a hopeful way to live, I think. Beyond–what a great word challenge!

    • 23/01/2013 2:55 pm

It is a great word… I enjoyed it and its message timely for me… TY! 🙂

  16. 19/01/2013 1:06 pm

    WTC twin towers 9/11:
    “If there’s no breaking
    then there’s no healing…”
    sometimes those sentences
    can’t make us comfortable …

    • 23/01/2013 3:01 pm

Hi Frizz! that quote is not on this post but on my other blog… You are cracking me up mixing up my posts… TY for your feedback! 😉

TY Madhu! This was fun… I’m looking forward to your shots. 😉

  25. 20/01/2013 10:28 am

Wonderful wonderful photos. The one scene that had its most impact on me was walking through a stone archway and there before me was the huge Canterbury Cathedral but did not have a camera to record it.

    • 23/01/2013 3:03 pm

That must have been awesome… Did you capture it? Hope so… 😉 TY!

  26. 20/01/2013 5:00 pm

Those landscape ‘beyond’ shots are so calming. Maybe it’s because of where I am now.

  27. 22/01/2013 12:00 am

That Napoleon Hill quote is awesome. Great addition to the challenge.

    • 23/01/2013 3:05 pm

  28. 22/01/2013 12:16 am

whenever I see building like these sktscapers I pause and wonder at the goings on inside…like I do as well often when I see people and wonder what goes on in the heads

    • 23/01/2013 3:06 pm

You are so funny Jo! But it’s is true… I like to imagine the lives people live behind the facade and closed doors. They are now Office buildings I believe… Will catch up asap TY! 🙂

  29. 22/01/2013 3:58 am

Inspiring words and take on the theme. Love the Napoleon Hill quote.

    • 23/01/2013 3:07 pm
