“Lord, bid war’s trumpet cease; Fold the whole earth in peace.” Oliver Wendell Holmes

Today, in America, we honor the armed service men and women who put country before self. Veterans Day, also known as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day; is a time when we gather to honor those who fought wars so the rest of us could have world peace. While some might think it’s ironic to see peace as a goal of war, it is appropriate to encourage all to seek peace on this special day; both inner and outer peace. In remembering those who fought bravely to keep us safe, we must use this opportunity to decide what peace means to us, to determine how we can maintain peace in the world, and then dig deep within for our own personal version of same.
“But the freedom that they fought for, and the country grand they wrought for, Is their monument to-day, and for aye.” Thomas Dunn English
Another way we can honor this special day is by focusing our energies on giving back to our veterans during the coming holiday season; Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and other days of celebration. Instead of spending money on endless trinkets and toys, we can make a holiday donation to the following organizations that help veterans and their families: The American Legion, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Disabled American Veterans, The Vietnam Veterans Of America and any other groups that call your heart. For a change, let’s brighten the holidays for a veteran too. More below!
“We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” Cynthia Ozick
One thing that stands out on this day is the spirit of gratitude that many express towards our servicemen and women. My prayer is that we not forget to give thanks for the blessings of freedom and peace we enjoy. Let us add Peace to the top of our special list of gifts we plan to share with family, friends and ultimately, with the world. May peace prevail in our hearts… What are your thoughts? What does this day mean to you? How do you honor Veterans Day? Do share! Thank you.
*Please bear with me as I continue to catch up on reading and commenting on your blogs… I’m halfway there. Thank you all for your patience!
Positive Motivation Tip: On Veterans Day, it is important to examine what war and peace mean to us, and work hard to ensure our children grow up in a world that is at peace with each other.
