Weekly Photo Challenge: Reflections

The world is a looking glass and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face. William Makepeace Thackeray

Weekly Photo Challenge: Reflections

Reflection: the throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it: the reflection of light; an amount of light, heat, or sound that is reflected by a body or surface: the reflections from the street lamps gave them just enough light; an image seen in a mirror or shiny surface: Marianne surveyed her reflection in the mirror. Contd below

It’s interesting that this week we get to create mirror images reflected in all sorts of surfaces… sort of like life, and how we respond/react to situations around us. I looked back to the dictionary for definitions because even though it is a word we use daily (I do on my blog), it does have a few related meanings; mirroring light and contemplation are two that I like. What about you?

It is not so much the example of others we imitate as the reflection of ourselves in their eyes and the echo of ourselves in their words. Eric Hoffer

Reflection: a thing that is a consequence of or arises from something else: a healthy skin is a reflection of good health in general;a thing bringing discredit to someone or something: it was a sad reflection on society that because of his affliction he was picked on; serious thought or consideration: he doesn’t get much time for reflection; an idea about something, especially one that is written down or expressed: reflections on human destiny and art. OxfordUnivDictionary

For this post, I created a few collages to compliment the individual shots added here. It was a bit of a challenge trying to decide what worked and what was a stretch. What I love about the photo challenge is that it has opened my eyes to learning new ways to use the camera and view the world. When we look through a camera lens, we might have a vision of what we want to capture and so we are  drawn to certain things that appeal to us. Yet, that view could be myopic if we don’t open our minds to see what isn’t obvious and embrace what isn’t always our norm… just a thought.  I love that the photo challenge encourages novice photogs like me to join in and have some fun… What is it like for you? Special Photo Challenge: Inspiration

The best things in life are nearest: Breath in your nostrils, light in your eyes, flowers at your feet, duties at your hand, the path of right just before you. Then do not grasp at the stars, but do life’s plain, common work as it comes, certain that daily duties and daily bread are the sweetest things in life. Robert Louis Stevenson

Special Photo Challenge: Inspiration – My 4 Year Anniversary on WordPress

What inspires me to blog? This is my 4th Anniversary as a WordPress blogger and I’ve crossed a lot of bridges since that first day when I had the temerity to add my voice to the global conversation. I haven’t looked back even though I’ve had my share of major setbacks. What I’ve come to learn is that writing gives me hope, inspiration and joy, and infuses my spirit with a sense of gratitude and awe. So what exactly inspires me? Lots of things inspire me to blog. Top of my list is probably my love for meeting people, nature, travel, family, advocacy/volunteer work, learning, adventure, exercise, good food and much more.

With gratitude, all life appears as a blessing – without gratitude, all of life is perceived as a burden. Jonathan Lockwood Huie

I put together a wide range of pictures that show some of the things I do… I wanted a shot of me taking a shot of something but didn’t quite capture any that fit the bill… So I kept going through the piles… ADHD me! It’s all good. I hope these help and that they give you a glimpse into my world.

I could probably write a book on each of the shots I included in this post as they tell a wide range of stories. They were taken all over the USA and in other countries; hence my international nomad title… But I’m coming close to feeling at home here. Home is where the heart finds rest. What inspires you? RIP Zig Ziglar: King of Motivation…

“Of all the attitudes we can acquire, surely the Attitude of Gratitude is the most important and by far most life changing. ” Zig Ziglar

“What you GET by achieving your goals is not near as important as what you BECOME by achieving your goals.” Zig Ziglar
“The foundational stones for a balanced success are Honesty, Character, Integrity, Faith, Love and Loyalty.” Zig Ziglar
“When you THROW DIRT at people, you’re not doing a thing but LOSING GROUND.” Zig Ziglar
“Where you start is not nearly as important as where you finish.” Zig Ziglar

Zig Ziglar was a giant in the motivational speaking field who inspired millions of devoted fans around the world with his wisdom, wit and generous spirit.  Even if you’d never heard of this inspirational motivational speaker/leader, you’d have come across his quotes on this blog and elsewhere. His hugely popular quotes are found all over the internet and I, like many others, used them for emphasis and to give clarity to a point of view. When I heard Zig had passed away, I was saddened by the loss of an inspiring teacher/speaker, motivator, author, wordsmith, and visionary. As far as motivational speakers go, he was best of the best…

Of course motivation is not permanent. But then, neither is bathing; but it is something you should do on a regular basis.” Zig Ziglar

“The chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what you want most for what you want right now” Zig Ziglar
“You were Designed for accomplishment , engineered for success and endowed with the seeds of greatness.” Zig Ziglar
“We don’t meet people by accident. They are meant to cross our path for a reason.” Zig Ziglar
“When you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear. When you do the right things in the right way you have nothing to lose because you have nothing to fear.” Zig Ziglar

Zig Ziglar, a World War II veteran, grew up in Yazoo City, Mississippi, and worked as a salesman for a number of companies before devoting his energies to motivation and performance training work. Even though he started his motivational career in his 40s, he traveled, spoke, taught and published over 30 hugely successful, motivational books in the span of 40 years. I loved his warmth and kind smile and how,  when he spoke, everyone in a room felt he spoke directly to them and their struggles… I will miss that. I have put together some of my favorite Zig quotes and I encourage all to read his books (See listed books below). More below
