The Social Good Summit which began on Saturday, “kicked off a phenomenal conversation about how technology and social media can change the world.”  The 2012 Summit, an important collaboration of social media, corporations, and other social good advocates, is  sponsored by Mashable, 92nd Street Y, the United Nations Foundation, Ericsson, the United Nations Development Programme, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. On opening day, the summit officially started with a special video message from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and then was followed by an impressive list of interviews with experts on topics ranging from The State of Social Good; The World in 2015: Millenium Development Goals; How Technology Can Impact Sexual & Reproductive Rights; Unleashing The Power Of Open Innovation In Government; to Ocean Conservation In The Digital Age; to How Google Earth is Changing the World; Project Diaspora: Africa’s Technology Renaissance; The Future Is Broadband; How Millennials Will Save The World; Save the Children: Every Beat Matters and so much more. I took copious notes and photos and will share more with you in the coming weeks. We had a wonderful surprise visit from Peter Gabriel and other fantastic visitors are expected throughout the weekend and on Monday.

“Instead of telling the world what you’re eating for breakfast, you can use social networking to do something that’s meaningful.” Edward Norton

A key goal of the summit is to encourage/increase global digital activism and, so far, it has been quite effective.  Over 200 meet-ups in 100 countries are participating in this event through their own grass roots efforts and conversations. We got to see and hear about a number of them and it will continue throughout the weekend; culminating in a huge global conversation on Monday. On Saturday morning, I met one of my favorite blog friends and we were excited to connect in person. I will share more on that later. If you are a blogger and would love to attend, I’d encourage you to do so. The program starts on Sunday at 1pm. More below!

“Until the great mass of the people shall be filled with the sense of responsibility for each other’s welfare, social justice can never be attained.” Helen Keller

Personally, I believe that social good is a universal responsibility. We can all do our bit to share our goodwill, our knowledge and skills to help each other succeed. Social good is a key way to keep global peace alive and help others thrive. With the continued growth of social media, we can use digital tools to make those connections immediate and effective. Join in, tell your friends to join in on livestream and help make this incredible conversation a success.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Have a spectacular weekend ahead! You are already a light on the path. What are your thoughts? Do you have socially responsible organizations you support? Where does your information come from? What expectations do they hold for you? What insights could you share with others? Do share! Thank you. 🙂

*Please bear with me as I catch up on your blogs and commenting… I’m back on track with reading and responding to your blogs; albeit at a slow pace. Thank you all for your patience! 🙂

Positive Motivation Tip: We share our good will and skills to help each other succeed. Social good is everyone’s responsibility and each can lend a hand. Connect!

The comment my friend the Island traveler (thismansjourney.net) left on my post about twitter: “…” I have more than 140 million active users, 340 million tweets per day.” … Wouldn’t it awesome if that 140 millions users all synch together to bring a positive change, like peace, or helping those in need? Social media can be a good thing when used right.”

Sure and that was the point of the summit… Using Social media for good causes and as a powerful collective voice. TY! 🙂

Elizabeth: It was such a honor to meet you in person at the Social Good Summit! Wow, I was so surprised!!! My biggest regret is that I didn’t have more time to spend talking with you. You are an amazing women with such beautiful, inspirational writing.
After I left the digital media lounge, I didn’t see you again but judging by your photos it looks like you stayed through the end and got to see JD perform. Wasn’t that amazing?!!!! And Beyonce’s song and video made me cry. I feel honored to be writing on social good and agree that it is a universal responsibility to give back and help others. We have so much and so many have so little. Thanks for sharing in a brilliant post! 🙂 I really hope to meet you again, maybe next year at the conference, and spend more time with you! Nicole

There you are! It was an honor to meet you too and it gave me such joy to meet another blogger friend in person… truly wonderful! You are as beautiful in person and that was so heartwarming. I looked for you on Day 2-3 but figured you were busy elsewhere… Yes, lets connect again. I might even attend the blogger event next year too. TY for connecting! 🙂 It was quite the Summit and I came away feeling both exhilarated and overwhelmed by it all. 🙂

      • 28/09/2012 2:46 pm

Ah Eliz, such a kind comment! You are so sweet! I was very overwhelmed and excited too. My friend Jen and I ended up getting press passes to the Clinton Global Meeting which was running the same time. Thus we were cabbing back and forth to both. It was crazy but the Clinton conference was amazing as we got to see all the heads of state and Romney and Obama live. You have to attend this one too next year! 🙂 I’m still trying to digest everything. I need to just log off the computer for the weekend and take a break.

Wow! Excellent post. Great initiative! Thanks for sharing this with us. I’ve been ‘out of commission’ for quite a while (course work comes first) and am trying to catch up with my blogging friends during this school hiatus. I’m so glad to have landed on this post. Thanks again for sharing. A cogent reminder to us all to use the tools and skills at hand for good. Blessings to you, as always. 🙂
