Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue…

14/05/2012

Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true…” Lyman Frank Baum

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue… A proud peacock in blue

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue… blue water

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue… blue sky, blue Atlantic ocean

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue… blue skies

“It comes down to the fact that you supply the blue, and they supply the other colors and mix them with your blue, and maybe there’s some blue left in the painting and maybe there isn’t. Maybe there wasn’t supposed to be any there in the first place. So have some fun and make a good blue and walk away.” Viggo Mortensen

So much is said about BLUE; blue mood, blue blood, blue period, blue moon, blue universe, the blues… I don’t think there is another color that has the word royal attached to it, and I bet the friendly peacock above would agree. I took his picture at the Bronx zoo and he was strutting around like a regal royal. Something about blue makes us straighten up, get serious, maybe sad too, and focus on the job at hand. When we look at the sky, the moon, and the sea, we are pulled in by something deeply profound and ancient; something greater than ourselves.  There is something to all that soothing, calming, even intoxicating blue…

“Winter, a bad guest, sitteth with me at home; blue are my hands with his friendly handshaking”  Friedrich Nietzsche

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue… singing the blues…

“If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the fields has power to move you, if the simple things in nature have a message you understand, Rejoice, for your soul is alive.” Eleanora Duse

When I saw Sara Rosso’s picture for this Photo Challenge, it made me smile. It brought back memories of night club hopping, disco dancing days. Blue lights are popular at concerts, nightclubs and settings where people gather to have a good ol’ time. I’ve wondered why they chose that color instead of say, red, yellow or even one of my favorite colors, orange… With a bit of research, I found out that Blue is considered a calming color and when the energy in a space is excitable and intense, the color blue is used in lighting to cool things down. That must account for all those blue lights I’ve seen at concerts. I’ll share a few and more. Blue is also considered a spiritual color, but more on that later.

“Blue color is everlastingly appointed by the Deity to be a source of delight” John Ruskin

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue… blue quilt

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue… NYC skyline…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue… blue bridge blues…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue… channeling blue at an anime show

“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don’t even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child — our own two eyes. All is a miracle.” Thich Nhat Hanh

The blue quilt above was made as a meditation mat and the center represents the blue pearl; the light of the inner self that dances before our eyes when we come out of a deep meditation. It is also considered the pearl of wisdom; God’s flickering flame and even the eye of Shiva. The blue Manhattan skyline paints everything it touches a shade of blue… nothing is immune even the powerful, tall skyscrapers.  As for the bridge picture above, it is of the Tappan Zee. Bridges take us across the sea of life and death. They connect us to the world of spirit and to new adventures. The young lady ties all of this together in that she epitomizes our relationship with the real, spiritual, and fantasy worlds… She is at an anime show which often features people dressed as powerful characters from comics and other related data.  What are your thoughts? More below.

“When you love a man, he becomes more than a body. His physical limbs expand, and his outline recedes, vanishes. He is rich and sweet and right. He is part of the world, the atmosphere, the blue sky and the blue water.” Gwendolyn Brooks

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue… ducks in Halsey Pond

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue… and blue flowers too

Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue… a blue cab when you feel blue

“I thank you God for this most amazing day, for the leaping greenly spirits of trees, and for the blue dream of sky and for everything which is natural, which is infinite, which is yes.” E. E. Cummings

What this challenge helped me do was to take another look at things around me that fall into the category of blue… I love flowers and one of my favorites is the blue Bachelor’s Button which I featured on another post. Above is a blue hydrangea bloom and I’m happy to share it. The blue taxi was shot in Portland. Because I’m used to black and yellow cabs, it was a rare find for me… As for the ducks, the water at Halsey Pond is such a deep blue, it takes your breath away. Enjoy!

Hope you enjoyed this! What are your thoughts? What photos depicting Blue did you find? Was it easy/hard to find photos that made sense of your views on the subject? Were you drawn to certain types of photos for the prompt? Do share? Thank you! 🙂 😉

*Please bear with me as I continue to catch up on your blogs and commenting… Thank you all for your patience! 🙂

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. I listed several via Zemanta below. (I will update it and add more). We all appreciate trackbacks/ping-backs and LIKES from fellow bloggers too! Check out how others interpreted the theme – BLUE – below. ***

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Weekly Photo Challenge: Blue. We’ve done red before, but what about blue? What do you associate blue with? The sky, the ocean…and what else? See how creative you can get with blue. Share a picture that is BLUE with everyone!

Positive Motivation Tip: Blue can be a mood, a color, a way of being in the world, but above all, blue is the color of God; the sky and the deep blue sea remind us daily. Enjoy it!

Why has blue become a metaphor for depression? Do you know?

    • 15/05/2012 1:13 pm

Perhaps the association is related to the sad music called the blues and feeling blue. I found the following on Wikipedia “The term “the blues” refers to the “blue devils”, meaning melancholy and sadness; an early use of the term in this sense is found in George Colman’s one-act farce Blue Devils (1798).[3] Though the use of the phrase in African-American music may be older, it has been attested to since 1912, when Hart Wand’s “Dallas Blues” became the first copyrighted blues composition.[4][5] In lyrics the phrase is often used to describe a depressed mood.[6]”

It would be diffivult to pick one photo as they all seem to say exactly what you were trying to portray. Each one represented a perfect image for the challenge. Of course, the peacock has a blinding color blue that is perfection. Well done ….

Excellent job, as always Elizabeth. The blue cab made me think of the cabs in Avalon, NJ. They’re pink and their tag line is, “When you drink Think PInk”. Clever!

  25. 15/05/2012 5:28 pm

Hmmm…I always wondered why blue is a popular light color in nightclubs. Such lights sure don’t calm me down that much…the music always gives me the energy to dance for hours! Great photography presented here =)

Until today, these lyrics of my childhood favorite song still inspires me, ““Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true…” Dreams do come true. All that we need to do is believe and try our best to get them. Beautiful words and images. Love it!

  29. 16/05/2012 5:00 am

What a beautiful collection of blues!

  30. 16/05/2012 5:31 am

  31. 16/05/2012 7:26 am

    Love the BLUE choices!

  32. 16/05/2012 3:48 pm

You and I gravitated to several of the same quotes about BLUE. By far, my favorite color. 😀

  33. 16/05/2012 8:42 pm

Even a blue cab! I know I’ve never seen one of those 🙂 There must be a sound reason that blue is a favorite color for so many of us…it’s both regal, like the peacock, and tranquil and serene like the Halsey Pond. I associate my love of the ocean with blue…that, and I have blue eyes, too. 🙂 Debra

  34. 17/05/2012 11:21 pm
