Musings: Memories Of May…

“Men are April when they woo, December when they wed. Maids are May when they are maids, but the sky changes when they are wives.” William Shakespeare

1 May Day
5 Cinco de Mayo
8 Iris Day
9 Lost Sock Memorial Day

May swept in on a cloudy Tuesday announcing its arrival on the eponymous May Day, during a New York Severe Weather Awareness Week. For the next 30 days, it offered plenty to do and celebrate during what I found to be a pretty hectic and challenging month. Had I known that, in between some pretty heavy duty celebrations, there were some fun May holidays like Eat What You Want Day on the 11th, Dance Like a Chicken Day on the 14th, and National Macaroon Day today, the 31st, perhaps it might have felt a tad lighter. The Iris is May’s flower. Above and below are several holidays observed in May.  What memories do you hold of this month? Did you celebrate any of them?

11 Eat What You Want Day
11 Twilight Zone Day
13 Mother’s Day
14 Dance Like a Chicken Day

We anticipated Mother’s Day with great expectations and, for some, with mixed emotions… Will the day go well? Will the flowers and gifts arrive DOA? As much as it’s a day of showing appreciation for moms around the world, all that advertising and the inevitable frenzied last minute buying and selling puts a dent on pockets and egos. Those who knew of the Food Feast holiday got to eat plenty of what they want on the 11th and more on the 13th. Perhaps the rest of us could have enjoyed dancing like chickens or spent a day watching reruns of  The Twilight Zone on the requisite May days…

Beneath the apple blossoms I go a wintry way, For love that smiled in April Is false to me in May.” Sara Teasdale,

23 Lucky Penny Day
26 International Jazz Day
28 Memorial Day

These three distinct holidays (above)  gave me something to think about. I love picking up lucky pennies on the street, so a day dedicated to the penny was great. Jazz gives me plenty of comfort and we needn’t have waited till the 26th to celebrate it. Memorial Day brought back memories of war and an appreciation for the sacrifice made by the brave men and women we lost in countless wars. Throughout the month, blog relationships ebbed and flowed; some blogging friends disappeared, and a few others bid good bye to the process by terminating their blogs… May was full of finality; a clearing for June. Inspiration: Smiling Is Infectious…

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” Leo Buscaglia

Inspiration: Smiling Is Infectious… Have you smiled today?

Smiling is infectious,
you catch it like the flu,
When someone smiled at me today,
I started smiling too.

I passed around the corner
and someone saw my grin.
When he smiled I realized
I’d passed it on to him.

I thought about that smile,
then I realized its worth.
A single smile, just like mine
could travel round the earth.

So, if you feel a smile begin,
don’t leave it undetected.
Let’s start an epidemic quick,
and get the world infected! via helpothers.org

Have you smiled today? Sometimes we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our lives, and a smile is the furthest thing from our minds. If your day has been stressful, blissful or uneventful, take a moment to smile anyway, it will help shift your mood. Then, spread some joy around. By now, we know there’s a ton of research on the subject. Smiling increases endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin to help our immune system. It helps us relax,  express our feelings, elevate our mood and increase our confidence levels. Hey, it might even help us live longer

“What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. These are but trifles, to be sure; but, scattered along life’s pathway, the good they do is inconceivable.”  Joseph Addison

Smiles by Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Smile a little, smile a little,
As you go along,
Not alone when life is pleasant,
But when things go wrong.
Care delights to see you frowning,
Loves to hear you sigh;
Turn a smiling face upon her –
Quick the dame will fly.

Smile a little, smile a little,
All along the road;
Every life must have its burden,
Every heart its load.
Why sit down in gloom and darkness
With your grief to sup?
As you drink Fate’s bitter tonic,
Smile across the cup.

Smile upon the troubled pilgrims
Whom you pass and meet;
Frowns are thorns, and smiles are blossoms
Oft for weary feet.
Do not make the way seem harder
By a sullen face;
Smile a little, smile a little,
Brighten up the place.

Smile upon your undone labour;
Not for one who grieves
O’er his task waits wealth or glory;
He who smiles achieves.
Though you meet with loss and sorrow
In the passing years,
Smile a little, smile a little,
Even through your tears. via famouspoetsandpoems

What puts a smile on your face? Hugmamma and I had a funny exchange on her blog that started with the question – How do you make a laughing face? Answer – Use the punctuation mark : so it’s – Colon lol colon. :lol: It got me thinking about the beauty and power of a simple smile…  and it put one on my face. Whether we share a Duchenne smile or a Pan American smile, some key benefits are that it helps us connect, DE-stress, even improve our attitude. More below!

Reflections: Relationships Are A Gift…

“If someone is in your life, it is because they have a gift for you, and you have a gift for them.” Robert Holden

All of our relationships bring gifts and lessons; sometimes bitter, sometimes sweet. Some  relationships are for a season; short, casual, fleeting, lacking in depth. Others are lifelong; with the complications and celebrations that accompany our journey on that path. Regardless of the strength or length of our relationships, we walk away with a gift or more — memories, emotions, lessons and even reinvented stories of the time we shared. What gifts do yours offer?

Zelmyra (103) and Herbert (105) Fisher hold the Guinness World Record as the longest married couple in the world; 88 years and counting. They were married on May 13, 1924 and maintain a strong, loving relationship. What is the secret to the longevity of their marriage? Zelmyra: “No secrets,” she says. “There isn’t any secret. It was only God that kept us together.”   Herbert: “I didn’t know I would be married this long,” he says. You may read more about their relationship in this AARP article: 86 Years of ‘I Do’ or connect with Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher on Twitter via their handle – @longestmarried  There is more below!
