Weekly Photo Challenge: Contrast…

09/03/2012

“There is no quality in this world that is not what it is merely by contrast. Nothing exists in itself.” Herman Melville

Weekly Photo Challenge: Contrast...

“The little may contrast with the great, in painting, but cannot be said to be contrary to it. Oppositions of colors contrast; but there are also colors contrary to each other, that is, which produce an ill effect because they shock the eye when brought very near it.” Voltaire

All of life is about Contrasts; dark and light, large and small, good and bad, black and white, bitter and sweet, ugly and beautiful and so on. We need both to appreciate the difference… We see the variations in nature; the diversity, the richness and we can blend our own colors to create new ones. In the world of contrasts, there are no losers, just creativity, compositions, preferences, art. Contrast is the difference in luminance and/or color that makes an object (or its representation in an image or display) distinguishable (Wikipedia).

“Sublime upon sublime scarcely presents a contrast, and we need a little rest from everything, even the beautiful.” Victor Hugo

“But someone once described the contrast between a good life and a godly life as the difference between the top of the ocean and the bottom. On top, sometimes it’s like glass — serene and calm — and other times it’s raging and stormy. But hundreds of fathoms below, it is beautiful and consistent, always calm, always peaceful.” Bill McCartney

I wasn’t sure how to go about this challenge as I had quite literal ideas in my head about it. I love black and white photos and tried to add a few but they seemed washed out once uploaded. Since this is about contrasting elements, colors, ideas, there are no limitations or ideals, we can offer our interpretations and all will have merit. For this challenge, I added images with contrasting colors from my surroundings, travels, nature, fabric and art. What about you?

“It was no more than a black slash in the ground, a poignant contrast to the lofty white marble and limestone of this monumental city. It was cut into a gently rising slope of grass An al fresco mortuary.” Nelson DeMille

“It is the sweetest spring within the memory of man. So green, so mild, so beautiful! Ah, what a contrast between nature without and my own soul so torn with doubt and terror!” Arthur Conan Doyle, Sr.

Nature offers the best contrasts and we are always pulled in by its wonder. We spend a lot of time comparing and contrasting things in our lives so, I’m curious to see what we turned to for this exercise… The selection process is quite fascinating, comparing and contrasting options, tossing in, tossing out choices… I might do another post on this subject. What are your thoughts? What photos depicting Contrast did you find? Was it easy/hard to find photos that made sense of your views on Contrast? Were you drawn to certain types of photos for the prompt? Do share? Thank you! 🙂 😉

My fellow bloggers were equally creative with their selections. I listed several below. I appreciate TRACKBACKS/PINGBACKS & LIKES from fellow bloggers too! Check out how others interpreted the theme Contrast below. ***

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post: Weekly Photo Challenge: Contrast. Share a picture that means CONTRAST to you!

Positive Motivation Tip: Life is about Contrasts; good and bad, dark and light, bitter and sweet, ugly and beautiful. We need both to appreciate the difference…

TY Arindam and welcome back to blogging again. 🙂

  26. 12/03/2012 2:05 pm

Fabulously differing interpretations of this “contrast” photo challenge here! Thank you. If it were not for contrasts, we would really see nothing, would we–it would just be a blank. This is how we should also view and celebrate human diversity, as well!

    • 16/03/2012 4:46 pm

Exactly! Life is about contrasts so i can relate to this one in a big way… TY! 🙂

  27. 12/03/2012 5:12 pm

Wonderfully written post and gorgeous photos Elizabeth! My favorite sentence is, “In the world of contrasts, there are no losers, just creativity, compositions, preferences, art.” 😉

First attempt hasn’t posted (might be in your spam bin)
    I’ll try via facebook!
Hi there – I liked your pictures – the path by the very blue water, and the sunset particularly. (Similar to my sunset for Contrast!)
I was reading your comments on Jo Bryant’s blog and want to ask you – do you have an email address for WordPress? It is impossible to get hold of one. I want to ask them why they block comments from Blogspot, as every week the challenge for me is not the photo, but how to leave my link on their website. If you have their email address I’d love to have it please.
I liked the extract from The Prophet. I love that book. It should be required reading!
Not sure if this will post on your blog – I’ll try!

If you go to WordPress.com, there is a Contact Us link.. You may reach them that way…
Thank you for your comment. I’ll stop by and check out your blog. 🙂

  30. 13/03/2012 7:01 am

Beautiful as always! Thank you!! 🙂

    • 16/03/2012 4:47 pm

TY Sunshine… I love your gravatar… You know, everytime and everywhere I see it, it makes me smile. 🙂

  31. 13/03/2012 2:24 pm

A great selection of photos and an excellent interpretation of this week’s theme!

    • 16/03/2012 4:48 pm

TY PiP! I loved your choice too… 🙂 Merci!

  32. 15/03/2012 6:40 pm

    Fabulous collection of contrasts.

  33. 11/09/2012 8:10 pm

What an outstanding turn-around concept for that challenge. Very witty and clever. And Love all the pics. I’d go with the contrast that Nature brings. Love those thin trees shadowing the contrasting color of the ground and water.

    • 11/09/2012 8:29 pm

TY so much Rommel. I am truly touched that you are taking the time to really check out my blog. Will visit with your brilliant blog again too. TY! 🙂
