Stay, season of calm love and soulful snows!
There is a subtle sweetness in the sun,

Aside from the nasty snowstorm we had in late October, we’ve had a relatively mild winter in NY. I was out and about yesterday; on the aqueduct and in NYC, Manhattan specifically, and I’ll share some photos from my jaunt. It occurred to me, as I walked about, that winter is as varied as spring in that you never know what you might see. I enjoyed the many lights in the City which brightened the night and had me thinking about what the trees would say if they could speak… I loved the colorful berries that popped out of the bushes; bright red, waiting for birds or other little animals to stop by for a treat. Oh yeah, I even took one of those colorful shuttles across to Grand Central Station, took a picture of the interior, and then walked back to Rockefeller Center to take one last glimpse at the Christmas tree below. 😉

As I trudged around both in nature and in the city, my eyes were drawn to colors and interesting sights. The huge terrarium plants you see above, were inside a building with lights glowing… They look like they are enclosed in water… or perhaps the hose is for circulation. The bright city lights, and the grand, colorfully lit tree added a festive mood to the city. The reddish limbs of a long expired and hibernating shrub on the aqueduct caught my eye too; all twirly shrubbery and color…

As I walked about the city, I bumped into a young couple at Rockefeller Center. They were inebriated but in a jolly mood. They were trying to take a picture on a timer but it wasn’t working well for obvious reasons. I offered to take a shot of them together. They obliged and then offered to do same for me. Initially, I declined but then relented. They were quite harmless out-of-towners. The young man took my camera joyfully and then dropped it. Yep, at that moment, I wondered about the wisdom of my decision, but he picked it up and took a nice shot of me and one of what you see. We bid each other a Happy New Year and moved on. No, they didn’t get a cart ride… That’s NYC for you. We can be friendly. As for the bloom, I think it is remarkable to come across blooms in winter time… but this is understandable as we’ve had a month of warm days and even though yesterday was biting cold, the sun shines brightly and early afternoons are quite warm

The leaves encased in ice caught my eyes because they were just below the shrub with bright red berries… I thought the juxtaposition of ice and berries was so telling; part of the beauty we see in winter time… The city lights still honoring the holidays also made me smile… People dressed in warm gear, the man on his carry cart, the subway musicians, the interior of a special train, all inspiring memories of what winter is and will always be… No snow? That’s okay with me. Have an inspired year!

Maybe I’ll post some pictures of “my” winter when it decides to show up! We’re having a heatwave…really! Now the truth is that it does get cold in Southern California and I have some real challenges every year shifting to immediate winterizing of the garden…it always sneaks up on me. It’s still coming! I loved your photos. And as I watch the clock wind down in NYC/Time Square I noticed everyone huddling in their warm clothes, frosty breath and all…and I wished I were there! 🙂 Debra
I think you should post your version of winter. When I first moved out to LA, I was surprised to find we had some really cold temps there… I hear you. Come visit NYC anytime, we miss you TY! 😉

There are beautiful holiday decorations around, and I’m glad I went into the city and caught the tail end of them light celebration… It is so easy to forget these wonderful things when we are in close proximity to it all… I know the lights will come down soon so I’m glad I captured them. TY! 😉
Every photo is wonderful and much like I expected after my Manhattan-dwelling daughter’s flickr photos and reading her descriptions. My favorite, in both photo and your verbal description, is the “twirly” shubbery, pink in appearnce and wildly, embracingly entangled. The leaves caught in ice were my next favorite, You are truly an inspired photographer. Such a wonderful Epiphany gift to remind us of the increasing light this time of year, hinting of spring!

Your pictures are beautiful! We are also having a mild winter here in Chicago. Also spoke with my dad in Bemidji, Minnesota this morning, and it was 52 degrees up there yesterday. Although we worry about the polar bears up in the arctic circle and the melting ice caps, I have to admit I don’t mind the weather here…
I don’t mind the warm weather but yes, it is of concern for the arctic region… I took a nice walk today and enjoyed the warm temperature… TY 🙂

Beautiful pictures! Here in Denver, we’re having an unusually warm spell, even for January. This weekend, though, we’re supposed to get a little more snow. The ski resorts should be happy. I’ll have to take some pictures of our barren aspens! You’re so inspiring, Elizabeth.

Beautiful pictures….we have had a very mild winter here thus far…not a snow flake to be seen…Since I don’t like the cold..its been nice…But, the winters do have beauty…!! as well as a necessary element…!!
I’m not a cold weather worshiper either. It looks pretty but can be a nuisance to get around in… I’ll take a mild winter this year. Last year was brutal.

Eliz, you have some lovely examples of winter. In Reno, we are all doing the snow dance because the mountains are still bare. It kills me to not ski every chance I get during such a short season. Spring is right around the corner. Miriam
