Weekly Photo Challenge: Another Look At Winter…

To Winter  – Claude McKay
Stay, season of calm love and soulful snows!
There is a subtle sweetness in the sun,
The ripples on the stream’s breast gaily run,
The wind more boisterously by me blows,
And each succeeding day now longer grows.
The birds a gladder music have begun,
The squirrel, full of mischief and of fun, Contd…

Aside from the nasty snowstorm we had in late October, we’ve had a relatively mild winter in NY. I was out and about yesterday; on the aqueduct and in NYC, Manhattan specifically, and I’ll share some photos from my jaunt. It occurred to me, as I walked about, that winter is as varied as spring in that you never know what you might see. I enjoyed the many lights in the City which brightened the night and had me thinking about what the trees would say if they could speak… I loved the colorful berries that popped out of the bushes; bright red, waiting for birds or other little animals to stop by for a treat. Oh yeah, I even took one of those colorful shuttles across to Grand Central Station,  took a picture of the interior, and then walked back to Rockefeller Center to take one last glimpse at the Christmas tree below. 😉

“O Wind, if Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?” Percy Bysshe Shelley

…From maples’ topmost branch the brown twig throws.
I read these pregnant signs, know what they mean:
I know that thou art making ready to go.
Oh stay! I fled a land where fields are green
Always, and palms wave gently to and fro,
And winds are balmy, blue brooks ever sheen,
To ease my heart of its impassioned woe.

As I trudged around both in nature and in the city, my eyes were drawn to colors and interesting sights. The huge terrarium plants you see above, were inside a building with lights glowing… They look like they are enclosed in water… or perhaps the hose is for circulation. The bright city lights, and the grand, colorfully lit tree added a festive mood to the city. The reddish limbs of a long expired and hibernating shrub on the aqueduct caught my eye too; all twirly shrubbery and color…

“Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.” Stanley Horowitz

As I walked about the city, I bumped into a young couple at Rockefeller Center. They were inebriated but in a jolly mood. They were trying to take a picture on a timer but it wasn’t working well for obvious reasons. I offered to take a shot of them together. They obliged and then offered to do same for me. Initially, I declined but then relented. They were quite harmless out-of-towners.  The young man  took my camera joyfully and then dropped it. Yep,  at that moment, I wondered about the wisdom of my decision, but he picked it up and took a nice shot of me and one of what you see. We bid each other a Happy New Year and moved on. No, they didn’t get a cart ride… That’s NYC for you. We can be friendly.  As for the bloom, I think it is remarkable to come across blooms in winter time… but this is understandable as we’ve had a month of warm days and even though yesterday was biting cold, the sun shines brightly and early afternoons are quite warm

The leaves encased in ice caught my eyes because they were just below the shrub with bright red berries… I thought the juxtaposition of ice and berries was so telling; part of the beauty we see in winter time… The city lights still honoring the holidays also made me smile… People dressed in warm gear, the man on his carry cart, the subway musicians, the interior of a special train, all inspiring memories of what winter is and will always be… No snow? That’s okay with me.  Have an inspired year!
What do you think? What type of winters do you get? Was it easy/hard to find the right photos for your examples of Winter? Were you drawn to specific examples for the prompt? Do share? Thank you! 🙂 Happy New Year! 🙂

This post was inspired by two prompts from WP Daily Post: Weekly Photo Challenge: Winter AND, A Picture’s Worth

Maybe I’ll post some pictures of “my” winter when it decides to show up! We’re having a heatwave…really! Now the truth is that it does get cold in Southern California and I have some real challenges every year shifting to immediate winterizing of the garden…it always sneaks up on me. It’s still coming! I loved your photos. And as I watch the clock wind down in NYC/Time Square I noticed everyone huddling in their warm clothes, frosty breath and all…and I wished I were there! 🙂 Debra

I think you should post your version of winter. When I first moved out to LA, I was surprised to find we had some really cold temps there… I hear you. Come visit NYC anytime, we miss you TY! 😉

What a great selection of photos! there are some beautiful Christmas decoration in New York!

    • 08/01/2012 3:55 pm

There are beautiful holiday decorations around, and I’m glad I went into the city and caught the tail end of them light celebration… It is so easy to forget these wonderful things when we are in close proximity to it all… I know the lights will come down soon so I’m glad I captured them. TY! 😉

Every photo is wonderful and much like I expected after my Manhattan-dwelling daughter’s flickr photos and reading her descriptions. My favorite, in both photo and your verbal description, is the “twirly” shubbery, pink in appearnce and wildly, embracingly entangled. The leaves caught in ice were my next favorite, You are truly an inspired photographer. Such a wonderful Epiphany gift to remind us of the increasing light this time of year, hinting of spring!

    • 08/01/2012 3:57 pm

TY for your kind words and you are a gifted writer as well… I fell in love with that bramble/shrubbery, Nandini… and the leaves in ice were reminiscent of how I always remember winter… The weather is warmer for sure. TY! 🙂

It has been years since I’ve been to New York City. Seeing the photos and reading your post brought back wonderful memories. I LOVE that city. I will have to plan a trip in 2012. Thanks for sharing.

    • 08/01/2012 3:58 pm

If you come this year, reach out to me and we can have a meal and see some sights together. You know the story, most of us don’t do much sightseeing where we live. TY! 😉

TY Bindu and thanks again for the wonderful gift of an award. I do appreciate the kind gesture very much. 🙂

Your pictures are beautiful! We are also having a mild winter here in Chicago. Also spoke with my dad in Bemidji, Minnesota this morning, and it was 52 degrees up there yesterday. Although we worry about the polar bears up in the arctic circle and the melting ice caps, I have to admit I don’t mind the weather here…

    • 08/01/2012 4:00 pm

I don’t mind the warm weather but yes, it is of concern for the arctic region… I took a nice walk today and enjoyed the warm temperature… TY 🙂

TY! I do love NYC even though I sometimes complain about how dirty it is… It is the City that Never Sleeps. 🙂

Beautiful pictures! Here in Denver, we’re having an unusually warm spell, even for January. This weekend, though, we’re supposed to get a little more snow. The ski resorts should be happy. I’ll have to take some pictures of our barren aspens! You’re so inspiring, Elizabeth.

    • 08/01/2012 4:03 pm

TY Sherilyn and good to see you back blogging again. Yes, do take some shot and share them. I think it would be a good record for all of us, so when the snow and cold comes back, we will have cherished memories of warmer days. 🙂

  10. 06/01/2012 9:18 am

Beautiful pictures….we have had a very mild winter here thus far…not a snow flake to be seen…Since I don’t like the cold..its been nice…But, the winters do have beauty…!! as well as a necessary element…!!

    • 08/01/2012 4:18 pm

I’m not a cold weather worshiper either. It looks pretty but can be a nuisance to get around in… I’ll take a mild winter this year. Last year was brutal.

  11. 06/01/2012 11:10 am

Great winter photos! I especially like the quote from Horowitz about the different seasons.

    • 08/01/2012 4:19 pm

TY! I love that quote too… very beautiful and so true about the seasons. 🙂

  12. 06/01/2012 11:54 am

    Nice winter. Looks mild.

    • 08/01/2012 4:20 pm

Thankfully, it has been mild… Although, on the night I took the city shots, it was quite, quite cold. Crisp and cold. TY! 😉

  13. 06/01/2012 12:25 pm

I for one am thrilled we’re having a mild winter so far. I think we have paid our dues over the past 2 winters, don’t you?
Love the photos as always Elizabeth!
    Thanks!

TY too for stopping by Dori! Glad to see you here… How’s winter coming along in your part of England? Have a great year! 🙂

  15. 06/01/2012 12:50 pm

Glad you enjoyed your winter walk . . . and that the “joyful” tourist didn’t bust your camera when he dropped it. 😀

    • 08/01/2012 4:24 pm

TY Nancy! When he dropped it, I was like… ‘What were you thinking, handing your camera to the jolly drunken visitor!?’ 😆 Oh well, it worked out well.. 🙂

  16. 06/01/2012 4:31 pm

Lovely photos, Elizabeth! I agree: winter does have different faces.

    • 08/01/2012 4:24 pm

TY Marcia! Do you miss Manhattan winters? 🙂

  17. 06/01/2012 4:38 pm

Glad you are well enough to be up an about in the winter!

Great photos, I really like the one with the leaves second from the bottom.

Like Nancy, I’m glad the camera was OK as I’m thinking yours is not the cheapest camera on the market!

    • 08/01/2012 4:28 pm

TY Robin! You know the story, dear one! The minute we feel a bit better, we are off and running. I didn’t fill in the fact in my post that I had taken my kids into the city to see a musical; they had tickets to The Book of Mormons… a gift from Grandpa. While they were at the show, I did my gallivanting all over the place. … Only a mom would know. 😉

  18. 06/01/2012 9:23 pm

Beautiful winter time you’re having 🙂 mine: http://evilnymphstuff.wordpress.com/2012/01/05/weekly-photo-challenge-winter/

    This is just beautiful!
For some reason I am subscribed to your blog, but never get notified of your posts. I’m going to unsubscribe and re-subscribe to see if that works!

    • 08/01/2012 4:30 pm

I’ve had the same thing happen where I found out that a blog I subscribed to was now unsubscribed… I will just re-subscribe. TY for your visit! 🙂

  20. 06/01/2012 11:21 pm

I like esp. your last photo: music gives warmth vs. the coldness …

    • 08/01/2012 4:31 pm

I thought you would like the musicians too!. It was interesting to see them in masks performing in the subway station at 42nd Street. Their music was quite good too. 🙂

  21. 07/01/2012 9:32 am

Wonderful photos! We have two Nandina bushes (your second shot) and they are so lovely in winter.

    • 08/01/2012 4:35 pm

TY freedom for identifying the berries for me… They are quite beautiful and the red berries are dramatic.. TY! 😉

TY and I realized it was worth posting again… I’m glad I did too. 🙂

  23. 07/01/2012 11:46 pm

Your heart must have sunk when he dropped your camera – no damage by the looks of these wonderful photos – NYC is one of my favourite cities – it’s so photogenic! (if an inanimate thing be called ‘photogenic’ :-))

    • 08/01/2012 4:39 pm

Yes, I was a bit concerned but fortunately the camera was fine… NYC does photograph beautifully; especially at night. TY! 🙂

    • 08/01/2012 5:02 pm

      Nelli,
TY for generously sharing your award and congratulations again! 🙂

  24. 08/01/2012 6:12 am

I’ve only been to NYC twice and I really loved it. I want to go back and take my husband because he’s never been. Love the pics!

    • 08/01/2012 4:40 pm

Oh do come visit and let me know and we can hang out and see some fun sites. 🙂

  25. 09/01/2012 11:05 am

Eliz, you have some lovely examples of winter. In Reno, we are all doing the snow dance because the mountains are still bare. It kills me to not ski every chance I get during such a short season. Spring is right around the corner. Miriam
