Our Attitude: The Last of the Human Freedoms…

26/01/2011

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” Viktor E. Frankl

Our Attitude: We can soar like an Eagle or lurk like a Vulture...

As we reach another day, another milestone, in our DailyPost A Day/Week Challenge, I am becoming acutely aware of how important our attitude is to maintaining focus with the process. It is not so much that we must find time to blog and post as it is that we must make time to do it while honoring everything else that calls our attention.

When I started my journey on the first of January, I felt that brevity would be imperative to the process. People are busy and have lots of other demands on their time and focus. Giving daily inspirational messages, quotes (see below) or words of wisdom must be made with sensitivity and not become a chore. As one of my blogging buddies mentioned, recently, it is quite easy to start writing with a goal in mind and, hours later, find reams and reams of material that might be best served in small doses or that isn’t quite ready for prime-time. We can choose to set some of it aside or post it and then modify it later… it’s all good.

As bloggers, we give from our hearts what, at the time given, seems best and valuable and then we give some more and more… The work never ends and we enjoy it. One of the things I love about blogging is that we can come back later and add or edit our shared thoughts. We can re-frame our content to address comments or views from our friends; all this makes the process organic and fun…

Oh by the way, in response to today’s question, if stranded on a desert island, I would probably take Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama” album with me… it would definitely help me maintain a cheerful attitude when the crocodiles show up. 🙂

That said, below are some of my favorite quotes on maintaining a Positive Attitude. Which of them do you like? Do you have a favorite quote you’d like to share? Do share any that you’d like me to add. Thank you!

“Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same.” Francesca Reigler
“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.” Kahlil Gibran
“The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” William James
“There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.” W. Clement Stone
“Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what people do or say. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill.” W. C. Fields

“It is your attitude, not your aptitude, that determines your altitude.” Zig Ziglar

“Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude.” Ralph Marston
“Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” Lou Holtz
“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” Helen Keller
“The greatest revolution in our generation is that of human beings, who by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.” Marilyn Ferguson

“The meaning of things lies not in the things themselves, but in our attitude towards them.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery
“Every thought is a seed. If you plant crab apples, don’t count on harvesting Golden Delicious.” Bill Meyer

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” Maya Angelou
“In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.” Albert Camus,
“Could we change our attitude, we should not only see life differently, but life itself would come to be different.” Katherine Mansfield
“Good fortune shies away from gloom. Keep your spirits up. Good things will come to you and you will come to good things.” Gloria Abelhas
“It is very important to generate a good attitude, a good heart, as much as possible. From this, happiness in both the short term and the long term for both your self and others will come.” The Dalai Lama

Positive Motivation Tip: Our attitude contributes to our spirit of gratitude or ingratitude… we must choose wisely.

much better than the quotations, dear Eliz, is, what you are writing as the first one (I think it is expressed by you very well):
you wrote, and that helps to find my own way faster:

I love all these quotes! I especially like Kahlil Gibran’s. Life is what you make it, your life is how you see it. It’s hard to keep that in mind, however, when you have to deal with circumstances that you feel will break you. And they can break you if you allow them to. I’m guilty of having a negative reaction to some unpleasant events in my life, and I know that’s something I have to change. I know maintaining a positive attitude is key.

    Thanks for sharing this! 🙂

My favorite Lou Holtz quote is: WIN stands for What’s Important Now! It reminds me to stay in the moment and not get buried in the what ifs. That helps me keep a positive attitude, too.
    Thanks for the post!

This quote speaks volumes to me. By Kahlil Gibram, “Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.” That ’bout sums up my take on life.
Great quotes! As always, fantastic post! Thank you 🙂

And so it is! Our attitude matters in everything we do and we get to visit this daily.
Sometimes, its not easy to maintain that equilibrium but then a reminder comes.
This post helps a lot! 🙂

It is a love of blogging that propels us to write, share and look forward to replying to comments. I began to post daily at the end of December. I did not make a pledge or promise to myself or others. It was something that I wanted to do and I made an effort to try. It has been more than 30 days and I think this is energy well spent. I have missed a day or two, but I do not beat myself up, because it wasn’t a promise. Thanks for the excellent motivational quotes!

When I realized I had missed posting one day because of a computer glitch (or maybe it was my glitch), I was bummed…momentarily. But it hit me that this is not a race or a competition, but a sharing of thoughts and ideas…and those don’t spoil just because they were posted on a Tuesday instead of a Monday. I had to look at it in a different way and that totally changed the negative feeling and brought me back to the positive.

Thank you , Eliz, for ALL of the motivational quotes…many were old friends…some are new acquaintances that I am happy to add to my treasure trove of uplifting words.

    Elizabeth,
I couldn’t agree more with this post! The way we look at our lives can certainly affect the way we handle every situation that arises. My favorite quote was the first one, by Francesca Reigler. Well, that one and my stepmom’s, which is “shut up and smile!”

You’re right, a good attitude is a great thing to have when tackling anything, be it blogging or just stuff you come across in your life.
Now that it’s almost been a month of daily posting, I’ve found that I enjoy finding interesting topics to discuss each day! 🙂
The blogging buddies was probably the best motivator to keep up everyone’s positive attitude towards the challenge!

I too signed up for blog-a-day. I couldn’t get myself to do it. Not because I had insufficient words, but I figured people wouldn’t read that much from me. I’ll be watching to see how your blog does. So far, it seeems as though people are reading a blog a day. Go get ’em!

    thank you again, Elizabeth!
