One of the delights of spending time in Manhattan is the chance to enjoy rich, flavorful food at the drop of a hat. On Saturday, as we leisurely drove down Grand Street on the lower Eastside, on our way to pick up one of the kids from an art class, I looked out my car window and there was my dear friend, Christine, strolling down the street with headphones solidly glued to her ears.
We pulled alongside her to say hello and, in the ensuing conversation, found out that the seasonal Hester Street market/fair was in full swing. Christine suggested that we should check out the wonderfully delicious ice pops sold by La Newyorkina. I remembered reading about them somewhere and they had received positive press. “Be sure to try the Mango with chili pepper flecks,” she trilled as we said our goodbyes. Mango with chili pepper Ice Pop? Hm mm, this might be an interesting taste bud experience to have and so, after picking up my daughter, we all headed to … yes, the Hester Street Fair.

When we stopped by La Newyorkina’s ice pop vending stand, there was a line of smiling customers eager to try this new treat and their reactions after biting into their treats was proof that they were not disappointed. Co-Owner Hannah Goldberg generously displayed the selections of the day for my camera. “We vary our flavors regularly and are happy with the positive reception our ice pops are receiving here,” she enthused. She was the consummate chef/host and gamely smiled for us and encouraged us to check out their website http://www.lanewyorkina.com for additional information.
Professional food mavens Hannah Goldberg and Fany Gerson are the brilliant owners and creative pastry chefs behind the La Newyorkina Gourmet Ice pop experience; an unconventional street vending business offering Mexican-style paletas, or ice pops, in exotic and evolving flavors like – Mango con Chile, Guava and Horchata Cinnamon Rice Milk, Jamaica Hibiscus, Pina con Menta-Pineapple Mint, Nuez Pecan with Cream, Fresa Strawberry, Tamarindo Fresco-Fresh Tamarind and Avocado – all inspired by their tasting trips to Mexico.

Gourmet Popsicles: Our Just Desserts...
Another important fact about these gourmet ice pops is that they are made from top quality, fresh fruit purees with tons of fresh fruits, vegetables and as in the paleta/ice pop, Nuez Pecan Cream, healthy nuts added to the mix. They are also a hand made labor of love. The end result is a delicious, intensely flavored taste bud delight that will have you begging for more; read a well deserved extravaganza.
Co-Owner, Fany Gerson, a pastry chef and author of the forthcoming “My Sweet Mexico” (Ten Speed Press) was not there when we stopped by but I suspect she would have been equally delighted to share her sweet treats. Fany grew up in Mexico City, worked as a pastry chef in America and spent 1 ½ years studying the influences that have shaped Mexico’s tradition of sweets: native fruits, Aztec kings, Spanish nuns and French chefs. These historic influences and unique flavor combinations have helped shape the thriving business operated by Hannah and Fany.
